    Way back then you had to have a distortion and a chorus. An echo was too expensive and a wah was like something from the dark ages. I can remember paying as much and more than now for pedals in the early 80's. £30 back then could get you a half dozen good booze ups in the pub. Don't be fooled into thinking that the old gear was and is great and that you should pay crazy prices for it. That's just a great big scam.

    • @stiffrichard2816
      @stiffrichard2816 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I just remember these boxes and most other gear back then all sounded great. You just got one and played. Now, so many choices and most things are crap. Tubes, cheap Chinese boxes, solid state amp that shred your ears with treble... Even a new factory fresh Marshall should be outlawed. I mean if you're gonna go deaf it should at least be the result of great tone.

    The first pedal I ever bought was the Boss CE2 back in the 80's. I dug it out, cleaned her up and hooked up to my Fender Blues Jr and so nice.

    The MXR has got some great tone. It's awesome how you have more control over the sound with the EQ on the pedal. The Ibanez sounded great as well. I have a TS9 tube screamer and I love it.

      The best is the Ibanez CS9, in my opinion. It sound smoother, it has the vintage thing... but, you can´t go wrong with the Joyo, the quality of his sound it´s amazing for that price.

    very similar to the CE-2 in the form of the MXR

    It has to be the MXR, followed closely by the Ibanez.
    MXR sounds the fullest and clearest from this comparison at least.

      MXR is also my favorite as it keeps the original note intact, where as the boss and Ibanez chorus tend to really sag. The Ibanez is still pretty decent. Joyo is a bit overwhelming and muddy, lacks character.

    the small clone is a killer chorus. if you havent tried one you should. i have built the ce-2 and small clone from scratch. i like the small clone and the ce-2 both alot. the small clone is probably a little over the top and syruppy but perfect for nirvana .thanks for the demo well done. Joyo effects are very good. i will probably buy the high gain distortion its really good great mid low gain.

    Strangely i like the joyo best. It has a brighter, sparkly chorus, instead of a deep watery one the rest of them have, yet i feel like i can get a good tone out of that. The MXR is my least, sounds more digital than the others.

  • @10sassafras
    @10sassafras 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks. To my ear the Joyo is very similar to the CS9 - they could be interchangeable although the CS9 is sweeter in the treble. The MXR is quite close to the CS9 too although with a faster maximum speed and some variability around the eq. All three are brighter than the CE2, which stands out as different. Arguably the CE2 eq is closer to the unaffected guitar tone but I have never really liked the Roland/ Boss chorus effect. It is quite pronounced and the modulations can be distracting. I find myself always trying to dial it down. Of these four the CS9 appeals most.

  • @DownUFO
    @DownUFO 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    really great demo, i'm a CS9 guy myself, my old one kicked the bucket though and i need to replace it (i bought a pretty faulty one at a huge discount, so i knew it wouldn't last long) but its jut got that perfect chorus tone for me. my one complaint with this demo (and one i have for most chorus demos on youtube) is that they'll do both knobs at noon, rate and depth at full, and then rate at full with depth at noon, but they'll almost never ever demonstrate depth at full with a low rate (noon, or even lower). that's what i always set my chorus at, whereas i find rate at full to be a useless ugly tone, so it's jut a bummer that almost nobody ever demonstrates that aspect of the pedal in their demos so it's always harder for me to know which would be ideal, meanwhile they always demonstrate the rate at full which is pretty much never useful.

    • @nicolemichlovsky2505
      @nicolemichlovsky2505 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeh i never understood that either...first i thing i do is crank the depth and kill the rate and i always assumed most ppl did it that way...apparently not...

  • @minhly650

    When I hesitate to choose an effect pedal, I come to this guy for advice. But if you could play a single-coil guitar and then a humbucker one for demos, It will be much better. We will have more options to pick a pedal for our styles. Anyway, your channel is still the best for me so far. Really appreciate it.

    Really like the CE-2 (Which I own) and CS-9. Joyo pedals don't sound bad, but I had one break a switch with the 1st pressing! So, won't buy one again:) MXR is always consistently good, and someones very good. No qualms about their Chorus. Would have liked to have seen the Arion SCH-1 thrown in as well..

  • @kierenmorre5641
    @kierenmorre5641 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    CE-2 is just THE compact, thick, lush chorus sound, for me ... the Ibanez CS9 has a bright, hifi thing going on (which kind of reminds me of every 80s chorus-laden film clip, ever). The MXR seems to take more after the CS9 ... I'm a thick, lush, analog guy, so .. CE-2. :)

  • @GinoMarks

  • @beau5375

    I have the Joyo. It is very bright & boosts the volume. For $35, what do you expect? The circuit looks the same as the 80s choruses. Actually I haven't seen anything to match the chorus in my digital vg88, which is otherwise a fairly useless box.

  • @Smudgie
    @Smudgie 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    The CE-2 sounds "brittle" to me.
    The C6-9 smoother
    The Joyo seems to be more transparent, more high end.
    The MXR is clearly more versatile but EQ should be set elsewhere,
    I expect the Joyo is a quarter of the price of the others?

  • @paulolsen6870
    @paulolsen6870 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I like that the BOSS had the smallest effect on your tone. It's good to me when an effects pedal doesn't color the tone much, but rather just does it's job. My second choice would be the Ibanez. The other two effected the tone too much and sounded "modern". I've been coming around to more of a classic tone these days. The Boss and the Ibanez do the best at allowing your amp to sound like a Vox.

  • @NormanWoods
    @NormanWoods 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    They all did the trick. Boss, Ibanez, and Joyo sounding pretty close to one another. Of the three I prefer the Ibanez. However, I would choose the Joyo, since for less than half the price of the Ibanez, it does a similar job. The pedal that seemed to shine here is the MXR. With its added EQ, it sounds a bit more sophisticated. All a matter of preference, though, and they all sound good enough to gig with.

  • @zplapplap
    @zplapplap 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good comparison demo. CE-2 shines. It’s lush and every bit as exceptional as I remembered. Ibanez sounds great imo and is sufficiently different than the Boss to justify owning both. I like the low and high tone pots on the MXR. I initially dismissed the MXR as more knobs than I want on a chorus, but the addition of low and high tone shaping is simple enough and demonstrably useful.

    I have the CE-2 (which I modded with a kit) and the MXR. I like the MXR best, but ran stereo there is a significant volume drop. Better than these, I found the that the Digitech Hardwire Chorus sounds most natural to me, without too much overly swooshy artifacts, more of a sweet separation sound and spaciness. Of course, nothing beats the TC Electronics Chorus (the old school Chorus/Flanger) ran in stereo.

    I agree with Wayne Smith. The Ibanez CS-9 is just an awesome Chorus pedal. I still have mine. If there is any criticism I have towards it, it would be that it might hiss more than I like during the decay. I bought a Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble a while back. Similar controls to the ones shown in the MXR unit above. The Boss drops some volume when the chorus turns on..not good! Gonna put my Ibanez CS-9 back in my loop :)

    Another great demo, bro. I ought to get a CE-2 and see what all the fuss is about. I owned an original MXR chorus. I didn't like the way it responded to dist./o.d. The CS-9 and BC-9, however, just shimmered and sparkled. I sold my MXR, even though it sounded more "natural". Now, the new MXR analog chorus might be worth a try.

      +bandit7498 In his current rig Van Halen has the Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble. Go to www.guitarworld.com/eddie-van-halen-reveals-secrets-behind-his-live-rig-powered-van-halens-2015-us-tour/26073 and read about his current rig. On the last page it even has every setting on amps and pedals!

      +George Kollaros I've got the issue at home, already read it. Take notice please that I posted that 10 months ago. I never said its the only chorus he ever used it that he would use it forever. However, if you watch the video of Eddie doing a demo of his latest 5150 III Stealth amp you can clearly see he has one on his board at that time.

    shnobel, which one do you think has the best chorus tone? I am listening to it, through small computer speakers, so it is not the same as you are hearing it, from the amp. So, which is the best tone, from where you are hearing it?

    I liked the Boss most as it seems both most usable and most musical. I liked the Joyo least as it seems unmusical. The Ibanez is a sherbet dip - I had one in the 1980s and this just reminded me - original tone is lost somewhat. MXR a decent second.

      All my Joyo pedals work without issue right out of the box. I'd thought otherwise, but what I discovered is that my generic 9v power supply made the chorus pedal buzz like crazy. Then I woke up and bought a proper power adapter, and now the chorus sings.

    I bought a cheap Dinosaur (Aria Pro) chorus pedal for $14. I thinks it's superb. It has a very good sound, it's dirt cheap and it's stereo ! Try one.
