  • Check out Lockport NY, this is 30 miles from Buffalo, NY. This is a charming town with diners, friendly people and lots of history. On this excursion we toured during the covid 19 epidemic so we were able to practice social distancing on this cruise boat because we were the only ones. Check out this great narrative of how the ErieCanal became one of the most important canals in 1825. Tour with us as we travel through several locks with Lockport Lock & Erie Canal Cruises.
Check out our other fun adventures through our youtube channel and don't forget to check out the Instagram account and website for great travel ideas.

    Hi,
The remainder of the Locks shown (The area of cut stone) are the South Tier of the Twin "Flight of Five Combined Locks" completed in 1848. The North Tier were completed in 1842. This was during the 1st Expansion of the Erie Canal. The Length of the Locks were increased and water depth went from 4' to 7'.
The 2nd Expansion in Lockport started in 1909 and completed in 1918. That is when Southern Tier of Locks were removed and Locks 34 & 35 were built. Water depth increased to 12'.
My Great Grandfather worked as a Lock Tender on the old Locks and my Grandfather (His son-in-law.) worked as a carpenter to make the forms for the cement to make the Locks for the 2nd Expansion.
I found this information on my Great Grandfather in the US Census. I don't recall the exact year, but it was 1870 or later. My Dad told me about my Grandfather. We have a photo in a frame during construction of the 2nd Expansion.
    Nice video.🙂
