Justin Vernon as a musician and a person gives me a sense of calmness and serene longing. Like sitting on the edge of a perfectly calm lake, and reflecting on all the other ways my life could have gone. His music is memory as sound. Often, listening to his music feels like experiencing memories I don't have, dipping a toe into the communal pool of human experience. It's something truly special. I really deeply appreciate this guy.
I remember when it came out I was a massive fan of bon iver before and I started listening and through the first tune I didn't really have an opinion, I was just interested in how different it was then that bassline kicked in on deathbreast and I was like okay that's huge then it cut out and that fuckified played and I felt it in my soul and that's when it became my favourite album of all time even after listening to only like 5 minutes or whatever lol
Thank you Bon Iver (The whole band not just Justin) for not following the path most trod, or even a path trod before, when making this new album. As a fan since for emma, forever ago was released I was intrigued by the Blood Bank EP but completely floored by the Bon Iver Bon Iver album. To be honest I didn't like it much on first listen and didnt know why you would mess with what i considered "perfection". Well a few listens later I realized the soul of For emma was still there, at least in some degree, and you were simply building and massively expanding what the project was. Hundreds of listens later and i not only like it more than for emma, forever ago; I consider it one of the best albums of the last twenty years. Years after making me fall in love with your music the second time I began to hear rumors of new songs coming. I looked forward to once again expanding and redefining my conception of what Bon Iver is. When the first songs came out, i was flabbergasted by them. Not only were they amazing songs, but instead of following the (relatively) easy choice of a "sequel" to bon iver bon iver or following the precedent of your last album and expanding your band's sound in such a way that it impacted ALL contemporary music. You surprised me yet again, you stripped the sound back to For emma, for ever ago and beyond to something more primal yet utterly new. You carefully rebuilt from that foundation without following any of your previously laid sonic blueprints and in the process shocked me yet again. Anyways I dont fret when i dont completely understand or even enjoy the album yet, because I realize that like any true art that it challenges you as much as you may cherish it. As a result I will walk away with not just a greater appreciation for the album at the end, but also your dedication to innovation, and even a greater aapprection to all music. Thank you again and forever -Ned
Went to his concert last week and sat right in front of justin's whole family. What an absolutely amazing and down to earth group of people who have supported this man the whole way. The whole band is absolutely incredible live and I without a doubt broke down into tears multiple times during the concert. If you have any chance to see them/if they come to tour anywhere near you - GO . Thank you bon iver for everything. 8+ years of listening to the music and thinking about all the emotional times this music has led me through, and then hearing it live is absolutely unexplainable and beyond emotional.
I totally respect them for experimenting and putting out such different music. They could probably quite easily make an album of 'Skinny Loves' and sell more albums but they just don't want to.
I was gonna say the same thing, a lot of the complaints I see on these videos is that it doesn't sound like those songs so they instantly hate them. Justin obviously went through something that changed him, and this is totally his "Age of Adz". It would be boring if skinny love was on repeat, I'm glad he's branching out and as he puts it "wants to destroy things".
What he said at 1:06:20 about the 45 song. I agree so much. It is my favorite song too on this album. I dont know how many times I've been listening to it in the last month.
It's even better in a live setting, when he tries to take it in a different direction or tweaks it a little bit. It's become one of my favorites if not the favorite aside from creeks.
Press conferences still Exist in the world. For music. Albums. Just a note. For an album to get me these days it must be something, and I've been making music since 1722.
Did you get to go to the rescheduled shows? If you didn't, if it's any consolation, I had tickets to go to one of them last week and found out I couldn't go anymore like the day before.
I didn’t discover bon iver until like last year but since then it’s changed my life and the way I see everything, it’s so cool that music can do that tbh
Happy for you that you discovered him, I was a big fan of him before this album and when it came out it blew me away as I was not expecting the shift but I fell in love about halfway through the second song and since then it's solidified itself as my favourite album of all time. Massively changed my life too
I love how this keeps with the idea of shrouding Justin's face. Like, it's a beautiful idea of maintaining his privacy and image in the midst of huge exposure.
I connect with his music so much! I absolutely love Justin Vernon and all of the music he produces. This album is AMAZING, all of his albums/songs are. His one album "For, Emma" seems like it was written for me and funny enough my name is Emma haha
Really cool opportunity to learn more about the album AND Justin just seems like a really cool guy. Someone you could grab a beer with and just shoot the shit.
he takes off the hoodie at around 22:33. that has to be intentional. also not showing his face and the text on the shirt. it's all set up in a very specific way to correspond to the theme and mood of the album.
what is it with Justin and going to places he shouldn't a cabin in the woods when it's snowy a greek island off season the next album he's gonna release is gonna be about when he went to Chernobyl during a windstorm. (Not saying it's gonna be a BAD thing, though)
If you're reading this, drop what you're doing and go get the cauliflower steak from The Lakely. Accidentally landed here and recognized the environment, had to pull up this video to Claire-ify it. Such a cool place, so honored to be here.
"Are these cryptic symbols on your album supposed to represent cognitive dissonance or a tumultuous self-discovery process?" "hah no, I just love symbols". People try way too hard.
I'm always suspicious of that kind of answer though. Cause it might be that simple, but I feel like film directors and writers do this a lot where someone will ask the meaning for something and they just kind of dismiss it with a flippant answer like "Oh I just thought it was cool" and I feel like you can tell a lot when it's a bit disingenuous and they just don't want to give away much meaning. That said, I think in this case Justin did literally work with an artist to come up with a lot of the art and symbols, but near the start he did explain that "22" had a meaning to him, so I'd be surprised if a lot of other stuff didn't too.
I think it definitely has meaning for him, but that cringe-worthy theory posed as a question caused him to shut down. It's more like he doesn't want to engage with (and thus, legitimize) that kind of stuff.
It's interesting that he thinks that the new record is less sad than the two before. For me, 22, a million is the rawest and purest one and it gets me even more than for emma, forever ago and bon iver, bon iver
1:15:44 "It was kinda cool to use ten as 'track' 10 in itunes and just put the other zeroes." So fittingly summarizes the messiness of Bon Iver's most recent work. There were so many beautiful sounds on the album tied together by the most unfortunate methods.

I love the decision to have the camera behind him for a press conference. Very cool.
Am I the only one who doesn't agree with that decision?
Mark Leon I think you're the only one who thinks it's important enough to disagree with
who who?
Mark Leon you. What I meant by that was the angle we're looking at is so inconsequential that "disagreeing" with it makes no sense to me
Kit Palmer who cares about it all really
"You don't have to clap" Yes Vernon, yes we do
no you don’t
Help me OP-1, you're my only hope.
This comment's underrated.

Justin is so down to earth. For being one of the greatest musicians of recent times, he's incredibly humble
This album went straight to the top of my all-time favourites

Usually albums like this that change style don't go down very well, but this album is 10/10.

Gained a newfound appreciation for 22, A Million after watching the press conference. Listened to the whole album through again and teared up.
best press conference I could have asked for.
Best album of the year

22, a M is better, though we take your point
Between blonde and 22 a million it's a toss up sad they both have no Grammy nominations

right after mentioning again how 22 is his favorite number!
Crazy. Well his shirt says Les Misérables which means Wretched in French. 🤔 (of course it’s also a novel/movie)
After getting a tattoo of song lyrics of Bon Iver lyrics when I was 18, I am now 22 and I'm finally seeing Bon Iver in February in Blackpool!

I love just listening to his voice, so deep. Very different from his, a lot of the time, falsetto singing-voice.
Thanks Bon Iver, this music can get to you like no other music can. I can't wait to go to your concert in Paris the 22th:)
Justin's articulation is just fantastic- what a special talent
