GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY!! OMG you guys, this was the best! Glad you enjoyed this taste of Frank, I loved all of the giggling. Frank was a genius guitarist & composer. He had an incredibly talented band called the Mothers of Invention & they really are hard to define by a genre. Brilliantly intricate compositions with ridiculous off color lyrics, his catalog is vast but I like his 70s works the most. And yes Hollywood, that's Frank's deep ass voice haha there are a couple more songs I think you'd really enjoy, he does mellow, he does chonky, he does instrumental. This was just the tip, so get out that Dragon Lotion & ease on in! Thank you SO much for what you guys do ❤(As Frank also says, keep it greasey...so it goes down easaaay! Hahaha 😁🤘)

Instrumentals Peaches En Regalia, Black Napkins & Watermelon in Easter Hay are also top notch!
Zappa was a virtuoso guitar player and brilliant composer, who took almost nothing in life seriously. You guys asked about his band a couple times: his backing band was the Mothers of Invention. The lineup rotated over the years, but Zappa always stocked it with incredible talent (Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio, etc...). I really hope to see you guys react to more of his stuff!
If you guys don't spend a few days studying frank,, you are cheating yourself. Frank Zappa is one of the best stories I musical history. How he operated, and his relationship to musicians,,is like nobody else ever was, or will be again.
You call yourselves rappers? OK, then you absolutely need to listen to the song Trouble Every Day from Zappa's first album Freak Out! I believe it might be the first song that delivers the lyrics in a rap-style, not to mention the biting words that ring as a true today as they did back in 1965! Little fact you should know about Dirty Love, Tina Turner was doing background vocals. Things to know: His band was the Mothers of Invention, but there were different groupings of musicians in it from the 60s to the 70s when he just toured as Frank Zappa He composed all the music, and played guitar, and when he played live solos, they were ALWAYS improvised during the show. He fits no genre, but had said that Johnny 'Guitar' Watson was the main inspiration for his style of guitar, though he expanded his mastery of the instrument far beyond Blues and R&B Thanks for trying him out, and what you played is the kind of stuff that thumbs its nose at the PC crowd, down and dirty is so much more fun. Hope you cue him up again soon! PK
Frank was more than just a musician, he was basically a philosopher. No matter what it was, Zappa never let anyone tell him what to do and he seemed to have an opinion on everything. The more reactions to Zappa, the better. His discography covers basically every genre and jumps across the whole spectrum from insane classical pieces to entire albums that tell horribly filthy stories about prison gangs, having sex with kitchen appliances, and catholic schoolgirls. He was insane and a genius all at once.
Frank Zappa was an avante-garde rock musician. He hopped between genres like it was nothin'. If you really wanna get a taste of his live self, look into the live performances of "Cosmic Debris", and "Montana" that are on YT. He composed and conducted everything on his records, as well as being an amazing shred maestro. Oh, and he may have looked strange, but he got mad groupies.
The name of his original band was frank Zappa and the mothers of invention 1967. He put out 44 albums of various types, a double album of his classical works with the London symphony orchestra,
Have not hit play yet. I am so freaking excited that you are reacting to Zappa. Please stick with it because it is a long journey. This man might be the most important composer of the 20th century. His solos will flat out make you weep. No one does it like Zappa. Completely Unique.
You should check out his song "Montana" or "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow", his songs are a bit strange, but then he'll melt your face with his guitar playing....such a musical genius!
Frank was many things as an artist. He did it all - avant garde, orchestral, rock, jazz, fusion, funk, rap, movies, composition, production, you name it. To the point that he became his own genre. Since you guys are rappers, check out dumb all over, released in 1981. Frank was rapping before people called it rap!
There was a party going on at one point in my youth. I was outside on a chair with a cd player next to me with this in it. I refused to go inside or interact with anyone unless they came out and sat next to me. It was this album. No regrets at all. I needed to hear this on repeat. And, in my mind, they needed to hear it too. This was more important. Introversion + Zappa =few friends ....but the ones that last...yes!

Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention did not use studio musicians because Zappa had a state of the art 16 track digital tape studio in his basement in So Cal in 1979. He didn't need the record companies anymore.😊 And yes! Primus is like Zappa. Brilliant and unique!
I'm late to the party here, but this was recorded at Ike Turner's studio, and Tina Turner was one of the background singers. Frank was singing in his normal voice at the beginning, and the deep bass was frequency shifted. Frank had two film soundtracks to his credit before having a band, both for "C" movies at best: Run home Slow and The Worlds's Greatest Sinner, as well as a few pieces of instrumental orchestral music. Zappa had several iterations of his bands, starting in the early sixties with the first version of the Mothers of Invention. Over time Frank had many people in the band who would go on to be big as solo artists. When the pop group The Turtles got sued out of existence the two main vocalists Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman joined as "Flo and Eddie" (not allowed to use their names due to the lawsuit). His group around 1973 included George Duke and Chester Thompson (later drummer for Genesis). He's had guitarists like Steve Vai and Adrian Belew play in the band, and drummers like Terry Bozzio just to name a few. The band you may have heard of is Zappa plays Zappa, which is his son Dweezil playing Frank's music. I would say if anything Frank inspired Clinton since Frank in the late 50's.

Clinton was influenced by Zappa. You can particularly hear it on Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On. Zappa started as a drummer but quickly switched to guitar.
Zappa was born in my hometown, Baltimore MD. Made his mark in LA and stints in NYC. He always had a large band of the highest caliber musicians. In fact, the rehearsal process for Zappa was insanely difficult, and you can find stories about it on youtube. He hired them and paid them a salary. It was a 9-5 for them when not touring. Live performance is where Zappa's band stands out. They basically had to learn to play every song in any genre style, anytime Zappa flashed a signal. They rehearsed until they could pull off anything live. A lot of his musicians resented him for it, but they knew they were the best live band on the planet. Then there was the PRMC, and record censorship panels in congress. Zappa was probably the staunchest defender of freedom of speech, appearing constantly on CNN and other news outlets, and testifying in congress. His lyrics are hilarious and a running joke alot of the time. The music though is downright serious shit. Zappa is not a Funk guy. He just has mastered all the genres and mixes them at will. The only way to categorize Zappa to genre is to create a genre called Zappa, or now (as this has already happened), Zappaesque. You will often hear bands that are hard to define and genre-fluid described as "Zappaesque." TLDR, More Zappa please.
The thing with Frank Zappa is that he has played/composed in almost every genre imaginable, from pop/rock to experimantal aleatoric and concrete quasi-classical music. And most of his music was actually composed and put in notes. To play with Zappa was both a torture and the biggest honour, and there are so many very famous musicians who co-operated with him, and Steve Vai, Tina Turner, Captain Beefheart, Terry Bozzio are just a handful of plenty of names. He recorded almost 100 albums. And if you want to react to Zappa, you can try "Why Does it Hurt When I Pee" or "Stick it Out" for crossing borders. ;-)
Frank zappa had a band called the mothers of invention ... he also has studio musicians but frank and George came on the scene around the same time ... they're jazz blues fusion funk .... with a bit of rock n roll ... frank is the lead guitar in his band ..
Now this is what a reaction should be!! And the perfect song to begin the Frank Zappa Journey!! I believe I heard the album that this song is on back in 1974 something like that for the first time I was 15 or 16 years old and it was my introduction to the world of Frank Zappa!! I have been a huge fan ever since and attended several concerts during the late 70s and early 80s at the Palladium Theater in New York City where is Zappa would have multiple concerts around Halloween each year!!! As a matter of fact I was in attendance at the very first live broadcast on MTV in 1981 of a Frank Zappa concert Halloween 1981 it was broadcast simultaneously over FM radio and I was there and it was awesome!!! There is no experience on the planet like a Frank Zappa live concert at Halloween time!! Unfortunately those days are long gone, rest in peace Frank!!!
Wow, so cool! Yes NYC Halloween shows are legendary! I've seen a bit of footage from that MTV show. Frank's reaction to Nina Blackwood's empty questions is hilarious.
Zappa goes back to the mid-late 60's listen to "trouble every day". He had many people with him some for decades, including Volman and Kaylyn from the Turtles, made the first rock video "200 motels". Worked for recording artists right. fought against censorship from rightwing dipshits. raised a nice bunch of kids and loved his wife (among others)
Bad Bad Bad! No No Never compare ABBA to Zappa. ABBA pure & clean. Zappa never never take him home to your family. He said he would never do anything that could be played on public radio. He is truly a MASTER!.
The band is called The Mothers of invention. Frank changed bands every few years, but they are always the Mothers. Listen to “More trouble every day” on their first album, Freakout (1965) I think it is the first rap song… spoken rhyme about social issues. It was about the race riots in Watts.
It's the other way around, Clinton is inspired by Frank.................."Every Black musician should listen to Frank Zappa !" -------------------------George Clinton
Zappa is a rabbit hole. He's recorded with several different bands he's assembled. All TOP notch players. Legendary players. He's written full symphony orchestral pieces with the oddest combinations of instruments. You could listen for years and still discover new shit of his you weren't yet aware of. What I've just typed here doesn't even scratch the surface. You should listen to "Apostrophe" (album) for some good laughs.
Frank Zappa Plays about any instrument he wants to but most often guitar and xylophone and keyboard. Little bit of trivia is that Stevie Vie used to be in his band and he's got a song called Stevie spanking where he trades lick for lick on the guitar with Steve Vai. That just might give you an idea of how good Zappa can be on the guitar when he wants to be.
Frank Zappa began recording music in the early 1960s! I do believe that his collection is over 100 albums! He played guitar which he taught himself he also taught himself how to write music and wrote the music sheet music for each and every instrument in his band including the drums! Zappa actually started out as a drummer and then switched to guitar when he was about 15!! There's actually a new documentary out directed by Alex Winters which is just called Zappa!! Might I suggest you watch it if you are serious about getting into the world of Frank Zappa!! If you decide to go down the rabbit hole, prepare yourself for a journey which will be like no other!!!
Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention was the full name. If you can dig Zappa and wanna know more about this genius..please feel free to ask. He was a total genius. It’s one of those things...if ur a certain age..Zappa was the king to a group of us who understood music then..and now.
Frank Zappa was a true original American musical writer and conductor. His first recording band was called "The Mothers of Invention." Study the Zapster and learn. Check out "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?" Learn from yer elders. BTW... the nugout, peanut butter confection was called "Abba-Zabba." Peace on earth.
there's a tribute band currently called Zappa. Or I think that's what they're going by. Mostly alumni of Zappa's bands. (Primus btw was very influenced by Zappa)
I had no idea y’all have reacted to Zappa before! That’s so awesome! I hope you’ll do more soon. Some of my faves are: “Watermelon in Easter Hay” “Catholic Girls” “Inca Roads” Oh, so many! And if you ever get a chance you should check out his movie “BabySnakes”. That was my intro to Zappa years ago. So grateful to that friend who let me borrow the DVD.
YES Amber! All too tare to find another female who appreciates Frank 💗 I hope the fellas eventually take a deeper dive, you know they would get quite a few snickers from his lyrics and song titles. Not to mention the ridiculous musicianship of Frank AND his band. We all know how MJK is always on point live, but Frank was very similarly a perfectionist with his performances 🤘
If you dudes liked this ya gotta check out Dinah Moe Hum from the Overnight Sensation album. Tina Turner and the Ikettes on backing vocals - wild, fun lyrics with awesome musicianship. Greetings from Toronto
ALL, AND I MEAN ALL OF YOU RAPPERS SHOULD GIVE HOMAGE TO FRANK FOR YOUR VERY EXISTENCE. CHECK OUT FRANK @ THE CONGRESSIONAL HEARINGS FOR CENSORSHIP IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.
Zappa started out as the bandleader in "The Mothers of Invention". They released their first album "Freak Out" in 1966 and released 7 albums before splitting up in 1970. Zappa later reformed The Mothers with a new lineup (including George Duke on keyboards and a host of other brilliant musicians), but would from around 1970 and onward, release records and tour under his own name. He's had hundreds of band members throughout his career. Some notable band members and contributors include George Duke, Eric Clapton, Terry Gilliam, Tina Turner (and the Ikettes), John Lennon, Shuggie Otis, Steve Vai, Sting, Johnny "Guitar" Watson and Allan Zavod. Zappa released 62 albums during his lifetime. The Zappa family trust has released another 50 after his death, seeing his total album tally well over 100 album releases. Zappa recorded songs in almost every genre imaginable. His music however is mostly avant garde rock with blues, jazz, doo wop, classical and some traditional world music influences. He was a prolific solo guitarist, composer and band leader as well an an outspoken commentator on social and political matters. He debated music censorship on CNN and spoke at a senate hearing on the same matter. He visited the Soviet union and was appointed cultural ambassador to the Czech Republic. His music contains a lot of social commentary and satire. He was very anti drugs and did fire band members for using drugs while on tour. Regardless of that being a well known fact, people still think he used drugs to come up with his music. There's a treasure trove of amazing music in the Zappa catalogue, but since it's a vast body of work, there are also pitfalls and some difficult musical obstacles to overcome. I'd recommend checking out the Mother's albums "Freak Out" & "We're Only In It For The Money" as well as "Apostrophe", "Over Nite Sensation", "One Size Fits All", "Joe's Garage" & "Sheik Yerbouti".
he beat the path that primus walked..he was a genre all on his own called''zappa''...all musical styles and some he created...george clinton said every black man should listen to zappa.

You will often hear bands that are hard to define and genre-fluid described as "Zappaesque."
TLDR, More Zappa please.
Excellent summation, Chris!! What's New in Baltimore? 😁😉🤘
Without shit ugly zappa, the music World would be much better 😂
Zappa was garbage, last shit 😂
Away with the pathetic shit zappa
Zappa goes back to the mid-late 60's listen to "trouble every day". He had many people with him some for decades, including Volman and Kaylyn from the Turtles, made the first rock video "200 motels". Worked for recording artists right. fought against censorship from rightwing dipshits. raised a nice bunch of kids and loved his wife (among others)
FZ was the band leader and composer. He used different band members over the years.
I wanted to check out more of Frank Zappa's music, thanks
Bad Bad Bad! No No Never compare ABBA to Zappa. ABBA pure & clean. Zappa never never take him home to your family. He said he would never do anything that could be played on public radio. He is truly a MASTER!.
The moment of realization.... Priceless!
To hear you say Zappa fits into a genre like Claypool, puts Claypool way up! I like it.
Zappa plays Zappa. That’s his son Dweezil playing Franks music
The band is called The Mothers of invention. Frank changed bands every few years, but they are always the Mothers. Listen to “More trouble every day” on their first album, Freakout (1965) I think it is the first rap song… spoken rhyme about social issues. It was about the race riots in Watts.
That was great!!! 😂😂😂
It's the other way around, Clinton is inspired by Frank.................."Every Black musician should listen to Frank Zappa !" -------------------------George Clinton
One of the top three guitarists ever
Zappa is a rabbit hole. He's recorded with several different bands he's assembled. All TOP notch players. Legendary players. He's written full symphony orchestral pieces with the oddest combinations of instruments. You could listen for years and still discover new shit of his you weren't yet aware of. What I've just typed here doesn't even scratch the surface. You should listen to "Apostrophe" (album) for some good laughs.
So true @BrownMoses!
first prototype rap was frank zappa ''trouble every day''...1965.....about watts riot.
George Clinton and P-Funk sometimes play the main riff in Zappa's "I'm the Slime" in concert. George was a fan.
The pooodle bites
(Come on frenchie)
The poodle chews it
(Snap it / not a speck of cereal / nothin but the best for my dog)
Zappa is amazing
His song "Fifty Fifty" another band member on vocals awesome organ solo!
His first recording band was called "The Mothers of Invention."
Study the Zapster and learn.
Check out "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?"
Learn from yer elders.
BTW... the nugout, peanut butter confection was called "Abba-Zabba."
Peace on earth.
there's a tribute band currently called Zappa. Or I think that's what they're going by. Mostly alumni of Zappa's bands.
(Primus btw was very influenced by Zappa)
I am sure this came up but the band is called the Mothers of Invention they are incredible on their own I have seen them 3 times live amazing shows!!!
Frank also spoke in defense of NWA and against parental advisory stickers and censorship in the late 80s early 90s
Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.
Love Zappa.
The legend...
I had no idea y’all have reacted to Zappa before! That’s so awesome! I hope you’ll do more soon. Some of my faves are:
“Watermelon in Easter Hay”
“Catholic Girls”
“Inca Roads”
Oh, so many!
Roses are Red Violets are Blue when I listen to ZAPPA my neighbors do too. 🎸🎸🎸🎸
CRANK SOME FRANK🎼🎼🎼🎼
Beautifully written, thank you so much ❤
Song fact: Tina Turner & the Ikettes @ back vocals!
he beat the path that primus walked..he was a genre all on his own called''zappa''...all musical styles and some he created...george clinton said every black man should listen to zappa.
This was the first album I ever bought with my own money. In retrospect, it explains a lot.
No means no was either, edit: one of my dads, or my favorite bands. Great reaction as all ways. And if you like zappa check out captain beefheart.
