I joined a contest for deadline motivation, and finished 2 short stories in 48 hours each! Having restraints pushed me to make decisions where too many options has been dragging me down.
It's funny that you said @10:39 about using short fiction to practice different skills. I wrote the first draft of my novel and got stuck and started writing short fiction to get a better understanding of other aspects of the same story. I wound up with a series of short stories that got published that dove-tail with the main manuscript. These stories all give insight into the different characters backstories and motivations.
