Hey Matt, if you get more Surface Studios for the members of The Chain, would you mind doing a short video about how the setup looks and works at the table? I like the idea a lot, and curiosity aside, I also think a visual representation would make it easier to pitch to my group.
Speaking of the digital version of the unit deck: I'd definitely buy a digital copy, because I live outside of the US, so shipping and taxes are going to cost significantly more than the deck itself.
Re: Pregen characters: For anything bigger than a one-shot, I like to work with new players in a way that they can still make the identity and narrative decisions for their PC while I handle the noodly mechanical bits (asking them questions with non-mechanical language if needed). They get the fun of making a character but the ease of a premade at the same time. I also like writing up tactical cheat sheets as a way to speed up rules knowledge for new players. The easiest way to do that is by working with other players, and attacking an enemy who is already engaged in melee." Or "Wizards tend to not have much hp or AC, so they want to stay at range and avoid getting hit. The mage armor spell can raise your AC for 8 hours, meaning you can keep it active for a full adventuring day with just two spell slots."

Interesting thing about Autherian lore; you can literally determine what era added to it based on the characters added. Base Autherian Lore? Auther set up the knights and there was this epic battle. Then some guy added their own OC Lancealot who was the best Knight ever who had strong courtly feelings for Auther's wife. Then another knight was added later who was basically better then Lancelot and also wasn't adulterous, plus a lot of themes were piled on that relationship to reflect a change in societies perceptions of adultery e.t.c. In fact he was so amazing that he found the Holy Grail and basically decided that he no longer needed to be in this story. XD So yeah. I view a lot of material in a similar way, including the certain religious texts which had an exceptionally strong toneshift between old style writing (a direct comparison to Greek Style tales were god's were forces of nature) to it's more kind modern interpretation. We can even see it in todays writing, where we are much more open about genders and relationships in general. It tells us a lot about what each era finds super important. I need to read a lot of the older fantasy books to see what they do differently.
I hope that you resuming work on Ratcatchers isn't indicative of you being dissatisfied creatively! I'm so happy to hear that you've been working on it though! I hope the "hurdle" wasn't too bad!
Thanks for running 4E, it was fairly successful at the store I played but that didn't stop a certain crowd from mocking us for playing an "inferior game". We never understood the criticism that it wasn't geared for actual role playing, to this day 4E was the game where our group had the strongest RP experience to date.
Responding to something you said. As a DM I definitely like to seed clues and references in my game world, but I can be disappointed when players dont remember them. I do sometimes step in and give them reminders, sometimes it is important as a DM to keep in perspective that time can be wonky. 2 weeks in the game world might be 6 months in real time. The character would probably remember.
For the VTT part at 1:22:23 - not the first time Matt has expressed this. As someone who has only played VTT and will probably never get to play in-person because my friends live all over the place, I've always thought that Matt's position on it is crazy. I would kill to be able to sit at a table and physically roll dice. *BUT*, that's because I don't get to do it. After 35 years of it, I'm sure it's long since lost its luster. And when it comes to DMing, I am lazy as hell and even struggle to get VTT maps prepared sometimes. Having to draw up physical maps would be a giant pain in the ass, I'd imagine.
There is something that is always going to be enjoyable about being around the table thats for sure. I haven't had any good experiences with Virtual and that might just be because i joined on random tables/groups. I think if i could get my friends to actually do it with me we could have fun.
@@trequor Well, I doubt Matt's position is based much on what is easier to stream - he announced in a video last month that (once they finally start playing again) they're no longer going to be streaming The Chain campaign, because the players don't want to be on camera anymore. Other than that, though, I see what you're saying - I personally don't agree with Matt's assertion that the virtual dice rolling is similarly exciting. It's all fake. The number is generated when you click the button; the graphic of the dice going from 20 to 7 is nothing more than a placebo effect. Nowhere near the same as real dice rolling, in my opinion. I've enjoyed 4e when I played for about a year years ago. I found the 'martial' classes, and items are better then 3.5/pathfinder/5e, but like the magic better in 5e. Oh since it's been so long what level is best to start.
Man, the white hot burning hate of at-the-table bookkeeping is something I didn't think I could relate to. Couple weeks ago I played my first face-to-face game and it came time to roll initiative. People enjoy different things. If someone is playing a game I don't like, with their own group, it has no effect on my life and enjoyment. There's no need to hate.
Well said. I always remember I probably still have more in common with that person that plays an RPG that I'm not fond of than a person that doesn't play RFP at all.
16:15 Regarding Moorcock's naming style; I always pronounced Melniboné, "mel-ni-bone", like Marlebone Station in London. It was only when I heard Moorcock reading some of his short stories on the John Peel Show, that I learned it was pronounced "Mel-nib-oh-ney". 😊 Is the "Sandbaggers" Matt refers to the TV series from the 1978 - 1980?
I think I would/will love 4e, but haven't ever learned it because I am just still enjoying 5e and how simple I find it to just plug and play with my own rules, spells, monsters, items etc. Maybe someday...
I read the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant back in the eighties and have re-read them several times since (and I love the books). What scene(s) from the Illearth War do you try and steal and stick into your D an D games - there are great moments in that book but I am not sure how you'd translate them for the table? (I love that my players haven't read all the fantasy fiction I have, great 'inspiration' for campaign elements!)
The rape didn't age well read them in the 2010s and I horrified and couldn't continue reading something that was poised to make the protagonist on some redemption arc after that.
Addendum as the CoC guy: Sanity can go back up. Usually in down time as a character gets therapy/does self reflection or by completing scenarios (which often give sanity as a reward.) I think the Sanity always goes down myth tends to scare people away from trying CoC because it's way too dismal for a campaign if that was true.
I imagine it goes down more than you get chances to get it back up. I may have to get my hands on, or at least watch a lets play of it now. Have a good day
@@iancanterbury2380 I run a CoC actual play pod and I can say with 85% confidence that sanity Loss and Sanity Gain tend to occur in equal proportion. Hey Matt! Any advice for running a D&D game for 13 year old, first time players? I managed to get my nephew to invite his friends over (girls included) to play a game! You've always said 13 is the perfect age to start playing.
Im not Matt but i would suggest that you try to find out what stuff they like to get a feel for the kind of stories they enjoy. Oh and remember that they haven't seen all the typical dnd tropes over and over again so the might really look forward to fighting skeletons and dragons while rescuing villagers. I would also suggest to design your session in a way that they can be reactive to your stuff. (Matt made a video about the best action heroes being reactive to their circumstances.) What i mean is that i probably wouldn't start in a tavern waiting for them to role play they haven't developed that muscle yet. Instead use scenes and npcs to prompt them to respond. P.s. The "(girls inlcuded)" thing is weird to me xD. Am i weird for finding you weird mentioning this ?
@@Trashloot thanks for those tips! I do think I'm going to go with the tavern start, making sure I make npc's approach the players and ask questions. When suddenly, someone bursts in asking for help. I contemplated the (girls included) thing. But I'm curious to know if he has any information on things to watch out for so that the girls playing dont get discouraged. I once watched an interview on the "how to be a great GM" channel where the host talked to 5 women about their experiences playing dnd. And it was actually very insightful. Dnd is/can be a very inclusive game but I certainly think some guys can be weird and... "scare girls away" so to speak. Lol (this is a guy problem, not a girl problem) I think asking "how do I make sure girls are comfortable playing in my game?" Is a valid question.
This is good advice. Find out what video games/movies/TV shows/books your nephews friends enjoy and find a way to reference it. Also for new players I find it's good to start with a scenario that the players aren't in too much danger. For example players get recruited to fight in a no killing blows allowed Arena fight or a start that is rp heavy with a couple easy fights to introduce your story.
@@nordicnugz Ah ok. It seemed to me like you were bragging about having female players or something. I've seen the How to be a great gm video as well but i think he overcomplicated the whole situation a bit. I've been running dnd for mixed groups for years now and my best advice is to just treat them like regular players. I have no issue with running a noble night who tries to win the heart of a girlfriends pc. As long as you empower your players to deal with such a situation however they want it should be cool. In my group the night got challenged to an arm wrestling match and was made fun of after he lost. Don't overdo such things and never let them get creepy and everything should be fine. Female players are really just another player at the table. Find out what they enjoy about playing the game and what they really hate. The same things as always are a good idea. Have a wide spectrum of npcs. Nothing wrong with a damsel in distress as long as not every female npcs is one. Safe the Dragon from the evil princes and have characters which inspire your players without stealing their show. You might have to police you players a bit. I had a girl in a mostly male group which was pressured in to a support role which she was ok with. But as Matt said: it is important to listen to what your players don't say. I thought that she wanted to be more active but to shy to let the other players know. So i gave her some cursed daggers and setup for some cool solo scenes which resulted in her going full Rambo. But those are all normal things which apply to all players regardless of gender :D. Don't overstress it and you will rock it. There is a german idiom which roughly translates to women do actually poop xD. It means we are not that different ^^.
Love your stuff! Thanks Matt. I'm curious if you've ever run Dungeon of the Mad Mage in 5th ed. I'm using it to cut down on my workload, but it's been over a year and we're not even in skullport yet? We've been having a lot of fun and are off the "rails" by quite a bit, which is fine, but I want to show the whole dungeon without running this game for the next 8 years. Any advice on utilizing content without rebuilding the whole thing? The point was to have maps and enemies at hand.
Or, if GW buys D&D, we’ll have a new edition every three years along with a ‘codex’ for each class. Edit: I wish I liked Modifius’ 2d20 rpg system more. They do Corvus Belli’s RPG for Infinity, Star Trek, and Dune, three great settings.

Having grown up reading fantasy and scifi around the same time you did, I understand the disinterest for reading modern fantasy and scifi unless someone else swears by it. There are precious few authors (Lois McMaster Bujold being one of the few remaining living ones) whose work I loved in the past and am still interested in reading now and in the future. That being said, there are some fantastic (pun intended) authors identifying as BIPOC whose work is not just a rehash of the Golden Era of scifi and fantasy. Representation is not just limited to Octavia Butler anymore! I know you have expressed interest and support (which you do through Arcadia) in diverse voices. I recommend if you are ever inclined to read some new SF/Fantasy, try N.K. Jemisin. I'm sure you've heard of her. There are others, but Jemisin is well known for good reason.
Nonsense into the void. I'd rather play 4e than 5e. But honestly Pathfinder 2e is better. I'd rather play Starfinder or Call of Cthulhu than 5e. I'd rather play Fate than 5e.

But those are all normal things which apply to all players regardless of gender :D. Don't overstress it and you will rock it. There is a german idiom which roughly translates to women do actually poop xD. It means we are not that different ^^.
I 100% agree with skippable pre-roll adds being the least annoying.
What do I do if all of my players ARE DMs, and they all really, REALLY have read all those books?
I love that opinion, I like good stuff then gravitate to sci-fi and fantasy. I'm stealing that
Love your stuff!
"There are other games I'm interested in running, but I haven't gotten around to it yet." Sir, if this isn't a mood and a half.
As a Portuguese I feel sad my country isn't in the list Matt said, Still brazil is strong though
Why don't I get an note you're going live despite telling youtube all :/
As far as I know, there is no online platform that pushes out alerts with 100% effectiveness. Best you can do it click the bell, and enable notifications on your phone.
Hi Matt! Dang I missed ya...
Just give anyone who has a physical copy a copy of the PDF.
What are the S words? I need to know!
We don't speak it's name but Sorcerers are now demanding better and greater grimoires each recovery session.
@@bodydes what does that even mean? Is that a Strongholds and Followers thing?
It's a dirty underhanded hint.
@@timburbagereads first letter of each word starting with the capital S spells it out
@@bodydes aaaaah thank you!!! I would never have got that!

I like Clout over Charisma.

All the german content creators are terrible (in my opinion) and we have a big rpg community. xD
I cancelled my Patreon subscription for less than a week thanks to this live stream... I can't not support this mad man!!!!
Nonsense into the void. I'd rather play 4e than 5e. But honestly Pathfinder 2e is better. I'd rather play Starfinder or Call of Cthulhu than 5e. I'd rather play Fate than 5e.
