In this vid he was marching with Mystikal (and yes...the spelling's correct) out of Newbury Park, California...a Div III corps. In fact, Mystikal didn't even GO to Denver for DCI in 04....Colby made the trip there himself just for I&E. As of now he's a 2 year vet with Blue Devils and won tenor I&E, the overall drum title, AND BD's 12th championship in 07....not bad for such a short period of time!
@TacoOnABoat Technically, a tenor mallet is a tenor "stick" with a large head usually made out of nylon. Though, I think mallet is an umbrella term for anything used to play tenors now that some sticks are specifically made for tenors.
I don't play tenors (I play snare), but my friend plays tenors and he told me that yamaha tenors are pretty hard to get scrapes out of compared to dynasty and pearl. Tell me if I'm wrong, but that might be why he's hitting a lot of rim like some of the comments say.
omg you dudes who dont get it obviously dont play drums i play the quads or quints rather but we cal them tenors in my highschool marching band and that good sir, is amazing kudos
@whitecastleawesome It's all about the screws on the inside that hold the drums together. If they're tightened too much, they embed themselves into the wood and the drums sag.
What does he do when he's not playing? I'd probably vibrate madly out of control n die . . . Imagine being stuck on a desert island with him, entertainment for weeks! Amazing skills.
i cant answer ur question cambodia, i play traditional with my left. im a lefty =)but im a snarist. or w/e the proper term is. i always wanted to play tenor at my school.instead went from bass to snare.
Some people can be as amazing as possible on drums with their hands but it might not always trasport smoothly to a drum kit. Simply due to the whole idea of two extra limbs working in unison. All in all a kick ass solo. Good control a few accidentals but overall, impressive.
Well, also, I think even though its "Showboating" he is also showing many different hybrid beats that he can play. He's just doing it to show his potential i guess.
I've been playing for 40 years and I can spot talent. Very nice sticking. Do you pull any of that over to a trap kit? Do you play a drumset? I would like to see you use some of that technique in a different way. Obviously you would have to put your feet in there and then relax the hands a bit for COMPREHENSIVE GROOVE. you've got a great foundation. Keep up the good work. ...A fellow drummer
@Rogers1977 its called chops... like my hs tech sucks at tuning... like my drums sound like bass drums and the rims are so high.. i still get clear sweeps
one of his drums, i think #2 sounds dead...maybe its just me, but it's not very vibrant...for all you hating on this video...colby has some serious skill. respect.
well, maybe i read into your message too much, but it does seem like people who comment on you tube are VERY critical--usually negative criticism--yet, they themselves can't do the very thing that they're criticizing. that's why.
I wasn't saying that this kid wasn't good. I simply said that I don't understand drum solos. He's freakin fast and I could never do that, I was just saying that I never got why solos don't ever have a beat of any kind. I play the drums and the acustic guitar so I understand how music works. I dunno why you are being so defensive.
There is rythm it's just underlining to the solo. A solo is a show talent more or less to control and knowledge of the set. He showcased several rythms.
i wasnt commenting on dream theatre...i said death metal is shit...this guy is 10 times better than any of that crap. and i'd rather listen to marching band music than death/black metal shit any day. anybody can pick up a guitar and make as much noise as they can
I never said that this kid was a BAD DRUMMER, I would have to be fucking oblivious to not see that this kid has lots of talent. I just said that the drums sound like a child's toy...which they do. They annoy me, and no matter how much you tell me that you have a wide range of taste as far as music goes, or how you would rather something over death metal, would change my opinion. Have a good day.
Yea I liked his showboating. He is very talented, but is that even a song? Really, I think that maybe the rims before the mallets, obviously werent into the beat, but after that, hes ok.
he's the best tenor player I've ever known
I give you all the props buddy
Man I love the sound of those tenors.
ive must have watched this video 100 times by now
omg. I just took timjacksons i & e solos from 2004 2003 2006 and 2005 on all different tabs. Then play them all at once it crazy like crazy
his hands are soooooooo chilll and relaxed
Fantastic. Keep up the great work.
Rock on
Kitch

wow i just started to play marching snare and i had no idea tenors do the same flips and stuff too wow thts pretty damn cool
omg this guy is amazing!
I can't complain about a thing. You're a master.
howly carp! that's some of the best skin slapping i've seen since Neal Pert!
thats why colby is now the center tenor of Q5(blue devils) lol. incase you didnt know he also won i&e this past year.
woot the '07 tenor champ in his early years lol he's in blue devils now & man has he improved
I love beer!
Oh ok...well there is no doubt that this kid is skilled!! I can't even see his hands moving sometimes!! CRAZY.
Really awesome!! Great job!
i think this guy is the beast
pretty damn awesome
Oh, piece of cake! *looks around* hehe... Great solo!

Perfect!!!
i like his playing style
I don't play tenors (I play snare), but my friend plays tenors and he told me that yamaha tenors are pretty hard to get scrapes out of compared to dynasty and pearl. Tell me if I'm wrong, but that might be why he's hitting a lot of rim like some of the comments say.
mystical
I hope he got the part!
omg you dudes who dont get it obviously dont play drums i play the quads or quints rather but we cal them tenors in my highschool marching band and that good sir, is amazing kudos
Very good.
That was actually his uniform top with the sleeves pushed up. He didn't wear his headgear (a black crested helmet)
@whitecastleawesome It's all about the screws on the inside that hold the drums together. If they're tightened too much, they embed themselves into the wood and the drums sag.
partyboy4alltime
those are vic firth scott johnson vega tenor sticks
Dam, was it just me, or did his rolls sound abnormally..... smooth?? It sounded tight! Good job dude haha
What does he do when he's not playing? I'd probably vibrate madly out of control n die . . .
Imagine being stuck on a desert island with him, entertainment for weeks!
Amazing skills.
man that was tight. Nice work man
his hands are like floating water
i cant answer ur question cambodia, i play traditional with my left. im a lefty =)but im a snarist. or w/e the proper term is. i always wanted to play tenor at my school.instead went from bass to snare.
HOLD Y TO DUAL WIELD SPOCK BOOYAH! lol dual spocking totally awesome

if you had hay underneath you, ya would have sparked a blaze.

you're right, this song is nothing like tim jackson can play. but its a pretty cool solo
@Rogers1977 its called chops... like my hs tech sucks at tuning... like my drums sound like bass drums and the rims are so high.. i still get clear sweeps
@InnerCityFB I believe he placed 9th....frankly, he should've placed higher (and DID in 07 with BD...winning I&E).
sweet last name
one of his drums, i think #2 sounds dead...maybe its just me, but it's not very vibrant...for all you hating on this video...colby has some serious skill. respect.
Good job man!
as a guy who plays on yamahas, i'd say they make your scrape technique better
Very nice!
Video rating is a 9.4 of the 10.0 max.
well, maybe i read into your message too much, but it does seem like people who comment on you tube are VERY critical--usually negative criticism--yet, they themselves can't do the very thing that they're criticizing.
that's why.
if you tap your foot or something, the whole first half in at one tempo. You just have to match it up right.
write down what you did in the opener and write it down that solo is pretty cool
that WAS amazing, but just noting, white sticks make it look faster
yea im stupid... took me awhile to figure out hes IN mystikal.. thought he was being superficial and wanted to be called the "mystikal" colby beers...
gee zus! that...was...like DAYAMN! lol
1:35 nice thumbs up
yp thaat was a cool opener beat
Never once did I say that Mike Portnoy was the best, never once did I say that CC or Necrophagist were more popular than Vehemence, or whatever.
WOW *****
I wasn't saying that this kid wasn't good. I simply said that I don't understand drum solos. were you at the I&E competition in 04?
wow you have very very fast rhythmic fingers... ;)
There is rythm it's just underlining to the solo. A solo is a show talent more or less to control and knowledge of the set. He showcased several rythms.
@Kioko212 k bet
I just shit my pants man.....
Um it does have rhythm, just changes a lot. Good work young fella.
or... new and not broken in yet.
@dR14356 Not likely.
almost dropped ur stick there ;)
then im guessing you've never seen Tim Jackson or Bill Bachman?
haha, he does wen he flips his sticks somewhere around 2:30
But will it blend?
travis barker sticks!!!!!!
LOL no onr really clapped for him
Why does drum 2 sound weird when he does rolls...
san marcos high alumni whats good.. so am I. back when that school had a legit drumline then they kicked me off. fake
Yea, i'll never get it either...
lol yea, like their football teams are amazing, cause thats like their only chance at going to college
mystikal still around?
what place did he come in?
heads sound warped
Excellent Drumline Playing.I just hate drumline shirts. Your hands are great.
Wat did he place???
must have sucked going up against tim jackson lol. i would have shit my pants
9th place, I think...
Yeah, I hate how those Yamahas are set up. Like, you can't play scrapes out across the drums easily.
some of the heads didnt seed properly
I hope you know mystikal is a drum corps...
Your spots sound reversed to me =\
Nice performance
DONT BE A HATA ALL YO LIFE SON
It was a joke. He is obviously playing on the rims on purpose for musical effect. Take a chill pill Mr. Dolan.
It's a great solo but he's hitting the rims a bit much, no?
He needs to look up from his drums. they won't go anywhere if he does.
i wasnt commenting on dream theatre...i said death metal is shit...this guy is 10 times better than any of that crap. and i'd rather listen to marching band music than death/black metal shit any day. anybody can pick up a guitar and make as much noise as they can
nice but listen to Tony Bennets Captain braddock is missing from last Shadows Tour,THATS a awful Drum Solo
i upload it today
niceeeeee not tim jackson but good, man he looks nervous

agreed man
check out my vids of playing tenor...
