My best friend (also a stand up comedian chain smoker who died early 30's) passed all his Bill Hicks videos & DVDs onto me-found then when sorting his stuff for his family to collect. This speech has stuck with me ever since & I've come back to it & shared it about 200 times in past 14yrs. Such beautiful truth, & none of the grumpy old guy or sting that my other fav George Carlin(also R.I.P) has. :)

I first heard this when I was a fifteen year old girl. I loved it. I thought I understood the depth of it then. Fifteen years of spiritual studies and I come back here today, listen again, and in all those years I learnt what I heard when I was fifteen.. just said in loads of different ways by lots of different minds. The real truth is, not only is it just a ride, we've already chosen love. We are already moving towards it at full velocity, together. We did it. We just haven't woken up from this dream yet. God never abandoned us. We abandoned god. We do not die. We transform. We do not make mistakes, we face many tests and obstacles on our path. Every one of us is divine and perfect. There is nothing out there that we can add to ourselves to make us any greater than we already are. It distracts us from our true nature and purpose. Only the river (or atman or higher self) has security, there is no worry about where it is going, it just is start and finish simultaneously. The currents might frighten you and produce what seams like great peril, but you are also the river as a whole, not just an entity separate and pushed around by it. Its about embracing the drama of life and indulging in it, all the while knowing onanother level that the river is, any percieved danger is an expression of the same thing you are, no reason to worry.

This is the mentality I take when I go running. I'm somehow really bad at taking it slow, so pretty much every time I run set time or distance at my maximum pace and it hurts like hell every single time. But I'm just there, living in the moment thinking I'm a passenger in my body. That way I don't strain my mind to push myself through the physical effort. I just accept it and let it happen. A kind of meditation.
