I am sorry to say, this story does not sound fictional at all, except the part where victims got restitution. That rarely happens. I was a physician for decades, and I saw more than I ever wanted to with scams in the healthcare industry, and not just from physicians.
A goggle search shows it does happen, but it does not get as much fanfare on the news for some reason. I mean, I saw one for hunderds of millions and it barely gets mention outside official government sites.
I don't think they did in the story. Just got it legally required. Mark will likely never make enough to pay them back, especially accounting for inflation.

It's so annoying how family and others try to blame the victim for the person's life falling apart when the truth comes out. They're trying to ignore the facts that the cousin and her husband ruined their own lives by being greedy, committing crimes, hurting others and bully op. They just want to make op the scapegoat. Small sums were taken while she had made big purchases, paying for everything, including rent, bills, car payments, and so on. $500 spent per month in small payments spread over the month is hard to notice when you spend what I assume is $3,000 to $5,000 a month on bills, rent, groceries and ECT and working 60 hours a week.
