George Vancouver was a British naval officer who had sailed with Captain Cook. He was later sent to the Pacific Northwest during a dispute over the area between the UK and Spain. Later the British Hudson's Bay Company set up a trading post called Fort Vancouver that later became Vancouver, Washington. The British lost that part of the Oregon Country to America and later established a new Vancouver in the part they kept, now called British Columbia.

There is a famous Amtrak line called the California Zephyr that I hear is a beautiful trip. It starts in Chicago and ends in San Francisco. It's a 3 day ride and covers 2438 miles (3924 km) through mountains and wilderness. They have lounge cars that are all glass so you have unobstructed views.

I think some full brates who have worked with us here on the East Coast for one year have used their savings at the end of the year to make that trip. Others simply want to fly to Vegas or California. But 1 who was more frugal did that with a group.

All 4 of the major cross country Amtrak lines are a great scenic (although quite slow) journey across the US. The Empire Builder goes Chicago to Seattle/Portland (They literally split/combine the train in Spokane) by way of Montana and North Dakota, the California Zephyr is Chicago to San Francisco via Colorado, Utah, Nevada (great Rockies and Sierra Nevada views), the Southwest Chief is Chicago to LA via northern New Mexico and Arizona, and the Texas Eagle is Chicago to LA via Texas and southern New Mexico and Arizona. If this list didn't make it clear, Chicago is Chicago because it was the nexus of every major railroad coming from the East and West of the US.

    • @susangrande8142
      @susangrande8142 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I second this; I’ve taken the Zephyr across the country a couple times, and it’s wonderful! Especially the Rockies. I’ve been on the Empire Builder, from Portland to Minneapolis, once. It’s lovely too, but avoids the Rockies. You get the Columbia River gorge, and then the high plains of Montana and North Dakota, that were scraped almost flat by the last glaciation.

For the most part, we found customer service related to Scottish train service to be highly accommodating. Services for handicapped travelers were exemplary and reassuring. Even Scottish passengers were amazingly helpful and kind. Overall, travel in Scottland was a very positive experience because of easy Scottish hospitality.

For viewer context: The reason why Shaun probably keeps getting Portland (Oregon) confused with Vancouver (Washington) when speaking about it is because they're twin cities, in that they straddle either side of the state line, across the Columbia River. If you're not familiar with the area, you might not know which side you're on! Lol

@@robertewalt7789 "Really nice" is exactly what I meant. You are allowed a different opinion. I have enjoyed my trips on Amtrak. It's a wonderful, leisurely way to travel long distance across the country, and a great alternative to just flying over it and seeing nothing. I can sit and read, listen to music, work on my computer, eat when I want to, look at the landscape across this beautiful country pass by outside the window, talk to other travelers from all over the world who are on the train with me. It's a "really nice" way to travel across the US. I'm sorry if the fact that some people like Amtrak irritates you.

We got to Steilacoom (about 1 hour south of Seattle) and the train derailed! One of the bridges that crosses Puget Sound hadn't fully opened and the train had to slam on its brakes to stop. The engine and the first 4 cars turned over. We were at the back of the train and we were ok. Miraculously, I think there were only 2 people injured. Needless to say, it was the last Amtrak train we have ridden on.

They have already received new Siemens diesels recently. Over the next few years new Siemens coaches will be replacing all of the ancient Horizon and Amfleet I fleet of coaches. Alstrom new high speed Avelia coaches being built presently are replacing the Acela coaches on the northeast corridor. Not every coach in Europe are newly built coaches, old coaches still remain in service. Watching your train trip brought back good memories for me, as my Mom & I used to travel that same route up & back between Portland & Seattle, back when we first moved to Oregon from Washington back in the 1970s. Still have vivid memories of a very nice elderly lady seated just behind us, on one trip, who went out of her way at the end of the journey, to comment on how " very well-behaved" I was! That kind comment has stayed with me to this day -- and made me want to continue being a good person, to never let people down. Hopefully, you can return soon to the Northwest -- perhaps to visit Pendleton itself (in Eastern Oregon), in your very handsome cowboy duds -- maybe see the famous Pendleton Rodeo -- and pick up some cowboy boots, to complete the look! Thanks very much for your always enjoyable videos!

Vancouver, Canada and Vancouver, WA are about 300 miles apart. I thought I was going to have another Edinburgh to London comparison, but not quite. Maybe more like Edinburgh to Birmingham.

Regarding the coaches that Amtrak use they are ordering new coaches from Siemens Mobility and the state supported routes such as the Amtrak Cascades will be getting them first

You could have taken a trip on a sleeper car from Chicago to SanFransisco. They have a roomette sleeper (which can technically sleep two ) or a superliner bedroom.
In a roomette, daytime seating converts to beds at night. Electrical outlets, climate controls, reading lights, a small closet, and a fold-down table are all within easy reach. Bedrooms are larger than roomettes and offer a sink and vanity with enclosed toilet and shower facilitiesThe bedroom features a long sofa and a separate chair that faces the sofa. There's a pull-up table between the sofa and chair. No matter which Amtrak train or sleeping accommodation you choose, all of your meals are included in the dining car for the entire journey.

The train is actually less frenetic than air travel and it's more relaxing to me. You must allow more time for it, and it changes your attitude as a result.

Hey!!!! Kelso/Longview, Washington! That’s where I live! And Kelso was founded by a scot who was from Kelso, Scotland near the England border. The high school is called the Kelso highlanders. You were literally a couple minutes walk from my house at one point on your train ride. Next vlog should be a real good one! Can’t wait to see your trip down the pacific coast and into the redwoods. I love doing the journey myself.

So glad you had a positive experience on Amtrak. Nice that you avoided driving in rain and you had comfortable seats. I’m a longtime member of the Rail Passengers Assoc. and have taken A LOT of Amtrak trips, including the California Zephyr on a trip from San Francisco to DC. We’ve taken our car with us on the auto-train from Virginia to Florida twice, gone from NYC to Montreal and DC to Burlington Vermont, plus too many trips on the Acela from DC to NYC to count. Train travel isn’t for everyone but if the journey is something you enjoy as much as the destination, there’s no better way to go. Does anyone really enjoy flying now?

Amtrak is surprisingly comfortable for long train rides. For holidays, my father takes the Amtrak Business Class seats from New Jersey to Boston, MA. It is a nice 4 hour ride with comfortable seats and good leg room.

Shaun, I’m glad you really had a good time in the Pacific North West (sometimes known as the Pacific Northwet). I just discovered your channel and it is wonderful to have someone enjoy and say nice things. It sometimes seems that Portland or Vancouver is just a couple hour stop to Seattle! You will be able to Will your Pendleton shirt to your grandson the way my dad did. They wear like iron!

Ok, Shawn. Hmmmm. Johnston’s of Elgin or Pendleton? Haven’t worn or wrapped myself in both? And as a NW American who wished I had met you and have been to both mills?
I’ll take the Scottish one, although, for sure, Pendleton is sweet.
    You and the Ms.?
    Thanks.
You made me helped me smile tonight.
    Thank you.
