Masked Rider wasn't jsut a rip off of Power Rangers, it was an actual spin off.
Edonoi, the home planet of Dex is also the planet where Alpha 5, the robot ally of the Power Rangers, was built.
Masked Rider's first appearance was also in Power Rangers at the end of season 2 of Mighty Morphin

It was actually Season 3 instead of Season 2 but otherwise correct.
Also I don’t approve of anyone referring to shows like Beetleborgs, VR Troopers, Masked Rider and Mystic Knights of Tir na Nog as rip-offs since calling something a ripoff basically implies that it was unauthorized or stolen but those were owned by Saban

Kamen Rider Dragon Knight was a straight up Americanised version of Kame Rider Ryuki, which was edgier still. They might not have been on screen, but the Japanese source material didn't shy away from having characters getting killed by the creatures. Indeed, several of the "vented" riders were actually killed in the original source series rather than dimensionally displaced.

They were appreciated. They just ran out of footage to use for them.

    • @budgiecat2885
      @budgiecat2885 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@originalShorai They didnt do it right. Started too late. Metal Heroes started with Space Sherriff Gavan (1982) Space Sherriff Sharivan (1983), Space Sheriff Shaidar (1984), Special Megabeast Investigator Juspion (1985), Dimensional Warrior Spielvan (1986 which was used for VR Troopers), Superhuman Machine Metalder (1987, also used for VR Troopers), World Ninja Jiraiya (which wasn't used, but his 20 yrs later guest star footage in Super Sentai was used in Power Rangers as his name was changed to "Sheriff Skyfire"), Robot Police Jiban (1989), Special Rescue Police Winspector (1990), Special Rescue Command Solbrain (1991) Exceeddraft (1992), Special Investigations Robo Janperson (1993 he made a cameo in Beetleborgs later), Blue SWAT (1994), Heavy Shell Beetle-Fighter (1995 used for Big Bad Beetleborgs), Beetle Fighter Kabuto (1996, used for 2nd season of Beetlborgs), Beetle Robo Kabutack (1997: this was aimed at younger children), and Iron Bark Detective Robotack (1998 which was similar to the previous show aimed at children but featured a dog robot detective and was officially the last of the Metal Hero series).
So they totally skipped most of the Showa era (Gavan through to Ninja Jiraiya), which they also could have used extra footage from two Shaidar movies. Not sure if they used movie footage from the Metalder movie for VR Troopers or movie footage from the Heavy Shell Beetle Figher movie for Beetleborgs but those two existed. They also coulda used footage from the Jiban movie (if they had used Jiban), as well as the movies for Janperson and Blue SWAT (if they had used those as well)
Of course technically you could also say Saban 'started late' with Power Rangers as 1992's Zyuuranger was used for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which means Saban purposely skipped over 1975;s Gorenger, 1977's J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai, 1979's Battle Fever J (prob couldnt use that since it was joint owned by Marvel), 1980's Denziman (first show to have a giant transforming robot besides Spider-Man show), 1981's Sun Vulcan, 1982's Goggle V, 1983's Dynaman (which had episodes comically dubbed in the U.S. on USA Network in 1987), 1984's Bio-Man (which WAS supposed to be the first Power Rangers show but the show never got picked up after its pilot episode), 1985's Changeman, 1986's Flashman, 1987's Flashman (which was the first show to have a 5 piece transforming robot), 1988's Liveman (the first show to use an animal motif), 1989's Turboranger, 1990's Fiveman (whiich consisted entirely of family siblings), and lastly, 1991's Jetman (which used the early 70's anime Science Ninja Team Gatchaman as inspiration), but for Power Rangers, Saban still had a lot to choose from with Super Sentai since unlike Metal Hero series which died off in 98', Super Sentai is still ongoing so there's that.
Plus Saban failed with Masked Rider (based off of Kamen Rider Black RX) and since that was the last Kamen Rider show to air in Japan until 2000's Kamen Rider Kuuga, there wasnt much for Saban to use to try again with Kamen Rider and he had enough on his plate with Power Rangers anyway, and anyone else that tried to use Tokusatsu material to compete against Power Rangers in the West were either threatened by Saban to be sued, or just drowned out by Power Rangers popularity anyway.

Fun fact about Power Rangers/VR Troopers. VR Troopers started out as a single-hero show starring Jason David Frank after he left Power Rangers and the original plan was for the actor playing Ryan Steele in VR Troopers to debut as the new White Ranger but so many fans were clamouring for PR to bring bacc Tommy that they pulled an audible and recast JDF as a returning Tommy and made the other guy the leader of a team of 3 troopers.

Mystic Knights did have a second season in the works, but with the massive boost in popularity after the ending of In Space Power Rangers Lost Galaxy would end up taking its place and the Post Zordon era of the show would begin. Kind of sad considering Mystic Knights had just added a fifth team member.
Edit: as for Dragon Knight focusing on fight scenes, well that has to do with the source material. In Kamen Rider Ryuki the entire plot centered around a battle royale between the different Riders, one of the reasons why it has one of the largest groups of Riders in the entire series. Last man standing gets any one wish granted.

Also, Los Luchadores felt less like Power Rangers and more like a slightly modernized rendition of Adam West's Batman in terms of campiness and colorful atmosphere. And Sarah Carter who played Maria Valentine would later go on to play Helena in the 2006 Dead or Alive movie.

Beetleborgs, Mystic Knights, Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, and Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad I watch back then, TTAFFBH was something I thought TFS made up but to find out sometimes bloody knows how many years that it was an actual TV series, Masked Rider I can't remember how I came across from it either looking up on the Power Rangers wikia or watch the beginning of MMPR Season 3, VR Troopers I only saw previews of it on MMPR VHS, Galidor the thing I remember it was the toy of the robot or whatever the villain I believe was, Van-pires I never heard of it when someone comment about it on a video I was watching (TTAFFBH theme song I believe that I was watching), and Los Luchadores...... Yeah that's the only one I never heard or came across it

Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad is an Ultra Man rip off more than a Power Rangers Rip off. In fact, many of the monster suits used were from Ultra Man series prior.
VR Troopers IS exactly what Power Rangers was, originally Japanese but tweaked for American and Canadian audiences.
Mystic Knights Of Tir Na Nog was actually original. While the concept of regular people transforming into colored warriors of various powers is very Power Ranger-esque. It's dive into mythological and fantasy elements clearly separate it.
Tattooed Tenage Alien Fighters From Beverly Hills was also original. Yes, similar concept but it's own production. Terrible as hell though.
Van-Pires was awful. Definitely more Transformers vibes than Power Rangers.
Masked Rider is also once more originally a Japanese production. Kamen Rider. Most of those shows are Saban productions all originally Japanese.
Los Luchadores really had little to do with Power Rangers other than being the same network and wanting to cash in on that success. The concept though is where they differ quite a bit. Was just too silly though in the end.
Beetleborgs... ah yes another Japanese show like many of the above. The addition of the Monster House were completely unnecessary. Though Billy Foresters comedy was golden.
Galidor... Ahh yes I remember it. Very original but yes very terrible. Nothing like Power Rangers really.
Kamen Rider Dragon Knight is once again originally a Japanese production.
So... a lot are not rip offs unless you consider their original Japanese source materials as rip offs of each other which in ways they are as they fit the genre but that's about where it ends. They are part of a genre not exactly a rip off but a building of the concept.

Although when it comes to VR Troopers, it was originally going to be a show called Cybertron, which would have been Jason David Frank's show, with him wearing Ryan Steele's suit, while Brad Hawkins was going to become the White Ranger for MMPR, but the fans wanted Tommy back so badly, that it lead to a lot of plans being changed. Hawkins was also the voice of the Gold Ranger on Zeo, yet doesn't even become the one to lend his powers to Jason. So chances are, he was denied twice on becoming an official Power Ranger.

Not all of these shows are as lost as you think
    1) The original Japanese version of Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad, *Gridman* had a recent anime adaptation (two, in fact).
    2) Two of the shows VR Troopers was adapted from, Uchū Keiji Shaider and Uchū Keiji Gavan, are part of a trilogy, set in the same universe as Super Sentai, the ongoing series from which Power Rangers was adapted.
6 & 10) Masked Rider and Kamen Rider Dragon Knight might be over, but the stories of the successors to their originals, Kamen Riders Black RX, ZO (pronounced Zett-Oh; to differentiate from the Kamen Rider whose show began in 2018, Zi-O) J and Ryuki still continue to this day.
    8) Beetleborgs/B-Fighters…Blue Beet and B-Fighter Kabuto (The Blue Stinger Beetleborg and the Gold Chromium Beetleborg were two different people in the Japanese version) were inducted into what is known as the Space Squad by Geki Jumongi/Uchū Keiji Gavan II.
    9) Personal note: you have to admit, that Glinching thing was pretty interesting.

you forgot 4kid's adaptation to Ultraman Tiga on Fox Box, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the Next Mutation. Also if you look at feature length films. I'd recommend Star Kid, from Trimark Entertainment. Kid comes across alien sentient battle suit and have to fight an alien scout that landed trying to recover the suit. Has Digital, but also a more live action effects feel that was like Tokusatsu at the time. Too bad that it faded into obscurity. Also with it's PG rating, it got dark at times.

wtf, Gridman (Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad) was not a rip off of Power Rangers/Super Sentai. It was more in the line of Ultraman / Metal Hero genre.
And Saban were dicks trying to sue them. They had no ground to stand on there.
Dynaman predated Power Rangers in the West anyway.

  • @AuliaAF
    @AuliaAF 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You seem to misunderstand the word rip-off. How can masked rider, who looks like insect, fights alone, with no robot and only 1 gun in robo-form, be considered a power ranger ripoff? It's like saying that Toad is a snake rip-off.
The shows you mentioned came from completely different line of japanese series. There are several main types of Japanese tokushatsu, which are Ultraman, Kamen rider, metal heroes, and super sentai. They borrow each other's theme, but some things remain distinct. Power ranger comes from super sentai line, and of course, follow the theme of multi-colored teens fighting monsters with giant robot. Although the story can be different, the usage of Japanese scenes make it easier to make similar theme. Power ranger rarely has metal armors, to differentiate them from metal heroes.
Super human samurai uses footage from Gridman, which is like a giant metal hero instead of sentai. Originally, there is only 1 person with detachable armor. It looks more like Ultraman than power ranger, although it's true that American adaptation makes it more like power rangers.
Beetle borg is from metal heroes, and yea, they're metal.
Masked rider is obviously kamen rider. Dragon knights look similarly colorful as power rangers, but it's inspired by Arthur's 13 round-table knights. Kamen rider ryuuki (japanese version) is a much, much darker series, with 13 riders having to kill each other. So instead of forcing it to make darker story, America actually mellowed it so much more. It's a kamen rider series with the most deaths comparable only to kamen rider Gaim. Main character actually has half-visible large round eyes, characteristic of most kamen riders.
