One of the greatest things about ebikes is the vast array of types and prices. I stopped riding about eight years ago (73 now) , due to back and shoulder problems and not being able to make it up steep hills. But that all changed the moment i test rode a bike with a mid drive motor that has massive torque. I'm riding again and actually getting stronger Kit bikes are fantastic because they allow anyone ant any price level to start riding again , especially for us old folks. I would encourage everyone, especially older people that may have health or strength problems, to at least do a test ride . You'll love it!
I'm that guy that bought a kit. Here are the pros and cons of installing e-bike kit on your bicycle. I installed my e-bike kit on a Electra beach cruiser. This model beach cruiser had semi fat tires, like most beach cruisers do. Con's Buy a DIY kit that is the same size rim as either your front rim or your back rim. Your brakes may have to be modified depending on if you buy a front-wheel drive or a rear wheel drive hub motor. If I had to do it all over again, I would not put a ebike kit on a rigid frame. Make sure you have a bike with suspension, both front forks suspension and frame suspension. My beach cruiser is a rigid frame and the only suspension I could put on it was the seat post neck. If you have a full suspension bicycle you're going to be able to drive it a lot farther because you won't get back aches from a rigid frame with no suspension. Make sure your bike can handle the torque of a larger motor like from a 750W to 1500W. I have heavy duty Forks on my bike and my motor is a 1000 watt motor with a 48 volt 20 amp battery. Try to find a heavy duty used mountain bike. It would probably be best, but you can modified it to your specifications. I know there are a lot of fat tire bicycles on the market, not too many of them have suspension and who knows how strong the front forks are or how strong the rear frame is. Pros Easy to install, pick any size motor that your bike can handle. If you're going to use your bike for transportation and you get a 1000watt Plus Motor believe me you're not going to be doing much pedaling, if you want to pedal use pedal-assist but if you're going to use it for transportation to get someplace quickly that's when the larger motor comes in handy. If you still want to get exercise get a smaller motor and use pedal-assist. Me I love my 1000 watt motor I rarely pedal. The only time I pedal is when I see a police car. In California 750 watts is Max on the street but you can have any size motor off road. If you buy a 1000 watt Plus Motor and people ask how many watts is it, don't tell them it's more than a 750 watt motor, if you live in California. In summary my main suggestion is get a motor and a battery that is going to push your bike, your specific body type and personality type. And last my three other suggestions, suspension, suspension, suspension.
@@04Pusher I bought it from China, it took 20 days to ship it. The battery charger it came with didn't work, they sent me another one immediately. I got that charger, I believed in 5 days. Here is the website, Made-in-china.com. if you have a 1000 watt or a 750 watt motor get a 48v 20ah lithium ion battery. You're lucky they're selling them for about $100 less than I paid. I paid $450 for my battery. It was actually $150 more than the DIY e-bike kit. A high voltage High ah battery is crucial, for going long distance or getting up hills.
I am told that the battery is NOT included with wheel kit. Correct? If not, then WHERE do you get the appropriate battery? I like the concept and have two Electra Townies I want to electrify. Thanks.
@@04Pusher you can purchase the DIY kit and battery from the website. Yes, you do have to buy the battery separately. Check out the kits, make sure you get the correct rim size.

It's a shame that the person riding the bike providing the "as if I was riding" video can't follow the rules of the road such as stopping for STOP signs and traffic signal RED lights. I guess that's why so many motorists won't politely share the road with us cyclists. Thanks for visibly giving us all a fine example of what NOT to do while riding on the roads.
John Carlson who gives a shit what car wankers think. motorists (a nice name for what are, in effect, total cunts) shouldnt have been driving for the last 30 years, due to the fact their hobby is causing global warming and wasting oil more than any thing else.
bikes aren't confined to roads rules like cars are tho. Hell, up till a few years ago you could rarely find a bike lane to drive in. Cars would zip right by you, leaving you no wiggle room at all. Thats not to mention if someone opened their car door on you cuz they decided not to look. I mean, you can hardly get car drivers to use turn signals anymore. Its not that people dont like bike riders, its more so that people just dont care about anyone, they are on the phone and not paying attention or a combination of both. No one sees a bike rider and thinks "How can I fuck with this person" lol
andy765gtr So basically you're too stupid to get a drivers license or got a dui and can't operate one. So you stoop to cutting every driver down. You must lead a very sad and hateful life.
Stop signs, traffic signals, right of way and speed limits still apply to ANYONE operating anything with wheels traveling on any public roadway. Do your research.
In reply to an idiot: For your information, I do have a drivers license, I don't have a DUI, nor am I stupid; my IQ is over 130. I've been hit twice by unattentive drivers in a hurry. Everyone using any public roadway IS required by law to follow the rules of the road for the safety of all!
I need to find a cheap conversion kit that is best for pedalling long distances with very limited motor assist. The variety out there is so confusing and overwhelming though.
Cody Watson I'm just starting my search and I'm looking for a small battery motor option that is minimalist, light, water proof and reliable. There are a lot of different sellers, but there are so many different brands that I cannot judge there reliability or best option.
John Kessler gas engines are beginning to look like the best option for me. Imbthinking one with a centrifugal clutch would be best- that way when I'm pedalling the wngine will add zero extra resistance aside from weight. Although electric seems much lighter than gas, when you add the weight of the batteries, you need to either spend a fortune on lightweight batts or go gas.
Cody Watson I am definitely not interested in gas. Every aspect of gas is a negative for me. In most important to least, the downsides are maintenance, weight, noise and installation. I don't have the requirement of long range like you do, so that will be a major difference between us.
John Kessler yes I see. I was looking into electric at first before I realized the distance restrictions and from what I've seen and the people I've talked to price is most definitely NOT indicative of quality so try not to fall down that trap- that being said, I beliece the hub drives to be the absolute most efficient and weight-conservative. A mid drive is basically buying a new electric bike, while a friction drive is just very inefficient- you lose a lot of energy between the motor and the road. Hub drives are tge way to go and I know there are a million options but one needs to realize these are all originating from only one or two facilities in China unless you find something manufactured in the US.
Cody Watson Hill Topper has a minimalist light weight design that suits my needs I think. That is probably what I'll go with. I haven't seen many negative reviews yet.
