Save your rear end gear lube bottles with the small funnel ends and use them to fill the carb from the vent with Gas. No need to endlessly crank it.

Enjoy your videos you are very knowledgeable. I was a heavey truck mechanic for 37 years I'm now 70 years old. I've owned Pontiac's every since I was 16. My first was a 69 Firebird 4 speed. Got married and car had to go. Later in life I bought a 68 Firebird. And also a 69 GTO. Had to sale both to pay for my son. Later on I bought a 67 GTO from my brother in law been in the family since 1972. Still have it. My son bought a 67 Firebird that was race ready. Still have it. Don't race it much because the cost of fuel. After I retired I told my wife I would like to buy another 69 Firebird. I found one and purchased it. The out side was finished. It needed floor pans and carpet. So that's been my project since I retired. Putting on new chrome and dressing it up just a bit. I was watching this video and engine looks and sounds great. You my already know this but I'm going to give some old school and old man tips. First I took a old distubator and ground the gear off of it and use it with a drill I never liked cranking a engine over with out priming the engine first.
The other tip is get a cleaned out gear oil bottle fill it about a half way up of the vent tube in front of the carburetor gose straight into the float bowl. I fill the float bowl with fuel. It saves the starter from over heating and saves the battery.

Not bad for just dropping in the distributor and bumping the stater with a little gas. Need to set the timing and check the carb too but wow that one fired up quick

I just like the idea of test running it to verify it ls all good. Plus it’s really easy to attach it back to the body too. The only negative I have experienced is keeping it clean during the body work stage.
That engine sounds really good and you haven't even done any tuning on it yet!
Nope haven’t even set the timing yet, i think this will be a great engine for this build.

Heck yeah this one fired right up can’t complain! The white stuff is the end of fun and like a cuss word in my world. That means no more classic car driving until all the spring showers wash all the salt away. 🙁

Thanks, I have done my last three builds this way. Last thing I want to deal with is a oil pan or oil leaks that require taking the engine back out. After the car is all assembled. I don’t like scratching the paint!
Wow! sounds awesome. Glad the distributor worked. Is that the stock coil and wiring harness? That may be the solution to my HEI problem on my Camaro.....
Yes, 1968 factory harness. The only wire omitted was the white one from the stater solenoid to the coil. That wire is only necessary for a pointed ignition.
What kind of issue are you having with the HEI?
I saw that carburetor on ebay, great price.
Great price just hope it’s good. I will give feedback once I start driving it.
I replaced the bi-metal choke piece a few years ago, made a HUGE difference in how my car runs when it is first started.

Don't you want as little as possible cranking when firing up a freshly rebuilt motor?
Cranking not concerned with if it was primed, now extended idle with a non-roller cam would be an issue for sure.

Good question! because that is it’s home when done. wish this was my car but it’s not. i don’t normally do restoration projects for other people but he asked at the right time and place. I wanted to do a car from beginning to end on the channel and both of my birds didn’t meet that. so what better way to do that then someone else’s car? plus I won’t go broke doing another one at my expense. 😁 love these old birds but they aren’t cheap to build or is it cheep 😉🤦♂️🤣

That’s great! To many projects get back burnered and forgotten about, it would be awesome to get it going again.
@VinylVillageGarage - any tips on carb tuning? My '68 Bird starts up with a really high idle, and I typically have to hit the accelerator pedal a bunch of times to get it to kick down to normal idle.
I can do up something on a quadrajet carb. Sound like you choke is opening to slow which will effect fast idle cam operation. What carburetor are you using and what type of choke? Electric or heat activated?

For 1970 pontiac 400 with quadrajet, how turns of the air/mixture screws all the in to out would you recommend as a good start. I hope I am saying this right.
Idle mixture screws initial settings 2.5-3 turns out is a great place to start then place a vacuum gauge on a manifold vacuum port with engine at operating temp and at idle and then adjust the screws in or out to obtain the highest vacuum reading possible.

They are out there but getting slim pickings for sure. I believe my friend Brian just found one in Arizona. I know it’s a 67 400 and thought it was a YT

The fan location looks too far back...Is that clutch correct?
Not to say it’s right but my GTO Which is all original clutch fan it sites when sighted straight on about 1/2 the fan blade width os also exposed just like the bird.
I just pulled my ‘73 formula into the garage after not seeing it for 13 years. Hooked up some jumper cables and got nada. I’m so bummed.
