great bike and equally as great video. i worked at a GT shop in the 90's and that GT front hub is from an Avalanche Le or Zaskar normally but as the end of the Hadly USA made GT hubs had to go from the selling of GT they did place then and lace them on a few high end bikes like the Karakoram. I have a 1998 GT avalanche Le the only year they made it 6061 like the Zaskar and it came with the black Haldly made GT from hub with an LX rear. we at the shop called the 98 avalanche,and le the baby zaskars as they used the same tubes. full suspension demand hurt the hardtail business for many in the late 90's. I love GT's and have a old U'brake GT Karakoram with purple swirl and a black 1999 Zaskar too. cheers and i'm a new subsrciber after this one great video. thank you.
I have an '88 Karakoram I got in a trade several years ago. It had a lot of replacement parts but all good quality like a Phil Woods adjustable BB and Spécialités TA triple crankset. It was a little small for me but I loved the Triple Triangle frame so I did a drop bar conversion on it. It is now one of my top 3 favorite rides, it handles great under nearly all conditions and is especially stable in loose gravel. Wish I could share a picture of it.
I had a set of those GT hubs laced to gold Mavic rims. Late 80s-90s GT hardtails are the best looking hardtails ever made. Design just looks fast and they had great paint jobs.
Combining a manufacturer specific front hub with a Shimano rear hub was pretty common in those days. Trek had specific Bontrager hubs, Giant used their ext brand. I suspect designing a rear hub might meant running into copyright issues if it was supposed to run Shimano freehubs. Although I have a pair of Coda hubs on a Cannondale with what appears to be a Shimano freehub. Kinda love playing detective on these old gems🧐
I own a 1998 GT Timberline, in almost original condition, and it also has the great GT front hub and some Shimano in the rear. I'm too lazy to go into the basement now, but I guess it's STX RC, like everything else on the bike. Rims must be some Arayas, if I remember right. Edit: FH-RM40 rear hub - um genau zu sein und der Vollständigkeit halber. :D

Great restoration! One thing that pokes my eyes (since it's my recent mistake on my 20+ year old no-brand pile of childhood joy), is settings of the brakes. Brake arms are too far from each other and noodle just hangs in the middle of them. It would look beter if you removed washer from brake pad from the inside of arm to the outside, and bringing brake arms closer to each other?
Thank you! Yeah, I did consider it. The fact that the left shifter was a replacement part and it being STX, with other components being LX made me decide against it. But let me assure you, that it will make its way back on another build in the future with an all STX RC groupset 👍

The white saddle & grips with the dth tan sidewalls were the perfect decision!

Agree 100% with the tyre choice. I might have tried Vans tan grips with the original black seat but the end result was fantastic.

I was just given a Karakorum GT - just needs the rear brake cable replaced and a little tlc. Its a hard tail with Rock Shock suspension forks.

I had GT hubs on a LTS and remember the rear hub failing very quickly. A real shame as lovely looking hubs.

I think the wheels are stock. My friend has a late 90s GT rebound that has a Shimano rear hub and a GT front hub.

Yes it is stock but the rear rim would change, maybe after damage.

Can confirm , all of my late 90’s GT bikes have come with a gt branded hub in the front and a shimano one in the back. 4/4 so far

The 18" and smaller GT hardtails look better for sure.
