Originally tattoos in Japan were for Yacuza or for criminals. Those who stole or committed crimes had bands tattooed on their arms so everyone new. Even tho its still a little taboo with the older generation, and some onsens and business won't allow you in if you have them. It's gradually changing now and being more acceptable.

Yes. It's quite frustrating to me as a stay at home mom that other females have berated and put me down for choosing to stay at home with my son. And god forbid I mention that in a few years when he's ready to start school I want to home school him. My bf doesn't force me to work. He doesn't force me to stay home. It's my choice. Our choice. The feminist pendulum has swung the other way entirely. Now if you don't choose to work and dedicate yourself to your family and your home, that's seen as a bad thing. So much for women supporting all women.

No one at ANY job I’ve ever had has really questioned my tattoos; they have definitely stared at first & asked what they were or joked about them, but nothing that kept me from doing what I needed & wanted to do. Multiple needles fanned out in different arrangements, attached to bamboo and inserted into the skin by hand, one poke at a time. The people doing Tebori have usually been dedicated to doing them for that specific family's members for a very long time. Modern tattoos, like the ones he has on himself and does for his clientele are performed with machines and not in the style of Irezumi or Wabori/Horimono which are the large scale sleeves or full body pieces that are representations of the "family's" beliefs, figures, or images of significance to them as a whole.

I recently saw a documentary in which famous tattoo artist Horiyoshi III said that he's getting more into tattooing as an artform like how westerners do it, and he is even using modern tattoo guns instead of the traditional practice with bamboo and needles (he's one of THE famous yakuza tattoo masters that the most prestigious main clans go to). In addition to that a lot of young yakuzas aren't getting irezumis anymore nowadays, only the diehard ones are. And their clan head doesn't ask it of them, either.
