The Warlord who shaped Furiosa into the Dark Valkyrie she became. Who set the wasteland on fire to conquer the citadel and depose Immorten Joe. Dr Dementus caused death and destruction on an insane scale just to feel something, anything and give himself purpose.

I loved that Dementus kept changing his title and look after every major event for him. Dr. Dementus (Roaming bike horde) , Red Dementus (Bike Horde shortly before learning of the Citadel), and Dark Dementus (Warlord of Gastown).
It's like the more people he leads the more the stress of managing them takes a toll on his mind.
I think the best example of this is the fact OctoBoss who was shown as roughly his second in command goes rogue shortly after we hear that Dementus is having a hard time keeping his horde in line. Moreover the Gastown Riot shows that either he was barely in control of the town or he was compelled to take the Citadel to appease all the mouths he's now feeding

I think he intentionally provoked the discontent in Gastown. So he could lead his followers to a new war.

I wonder if there was intentional color theory in the character's wardrobe design through each stage of the movie to reflect his decline, similarly to Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy.

Octoboss going rogue might have something to do with Dementus killing some of his underlings during the trojan horse rig chase. He calls him scum after he starts killing the fake War Boys to make the defenders open the gate.

That's because he profers himself as a "populist leader" as epitomised by his speech to the people of the Citadel. He's trying to appease everyone, unlike Joe et al who know enough (as tyrannical warlords anywaym) to keep an elite few happy.

Excellent way of looking at it. I kind of see his apathy for mankind’s apathy towards their inevitable extinction. They’ve spent so long fighting to survive and having nothing to show for it that now, they’ve just decided to let loose and fun until death takes them, morality be damned.

In the two movies, we see the contrasts of the three pivotal characters, furiosa, joe and dementus with furiosa somewhere in between the two. Dementus is someone who's basically surrendered to the wasteland, this is shown by his motives, ideas especially during the third act and unnecessary brutality. The whole "there is no hope" and his back and forth with Furiosa. Immortan on the other hand (and yes he's an evil tyrant) is someone who actively defies the wasteland and wants to bring a semblance of civilisation to it, he establishes townships, fosters trade and cooperation and even creates an ideology to unite people together. What of course makes this evil is that it's ultimately for his own selfish benefit and interest, which ironically is just remaking or repeating the mistakes of the previous world that led to their situation. Furiosa is somewhere in between because like Joe, she remembers an old yet pristine world that's still has a sense of civilisation but also as we see throughout the film, she swings towards Dementus' side especially with her vengeance plot which ultimately is where we see her at the start of Fury Road or at least prior to the wives' rescue.

The painting in gas town is a reproduction of a very famous pre-Raphaelite painting of fallen Icarus being found by inquisitive nymphs.
So the painting is both a depiction of a story about a fall from grace, and after dementus graffiti’s it up, is representative of humanity’s and his own fall from grace

I can't help but comment again. I saw this movie twice so far and it's amazing. When we see Dementus at Gas Town, I remember saying to myself, while eating my popcorn, "Dementus got to comfortable." His crave for power and dominance got to the best of him. Gas Town was the starting point of his downfall. It's kinda sad that Dementus had lots of power and a huge bike clan/ gang that followed him through hell and high water, and in the end, we see him lose it all. Good movie and good story, and Chris Hemsworth's performance was near perfection.

Full Life is the phrase you were looking for. Anyhow great analysis, I would add is that Dementus isn’t good at managing resources he can take them I think this shows that he doesn’t care about preserving stuff.
As horrible as Immortan Joe, The People Eater, and the Bullet Farmer were they could manage resources (not so much Joe’s 2 sons) I think this shows that they are wanting to preserve stuff and history.
This could be because of who they were before the fall; Immortan Joe was a Colonel, The Bullet Farmer was his lieutenant, and the People Eater was a banker. This could showcase that Dementus lacked the skills or forgot skills from his previous career.
Hope everyone had a happy Memorial Day.

That's also why the three represent s what was wrong with the old world and how that turned the world into its state in the movies. The whole "who killed the world", like I agree, Joe et al had some good ideas, we can argue that he and his cronies and underlings live the best life in the wasteland but the problem is that they're hoarding it unnecessarily and ironically hinders progress.

Your a little confused about his kindness. He does not tell furiosa to look away as they torture and kill her mother, in fact he holds her eyes open and makes her watch. Its only later that he tells her to look away as they draw and quater a man with motorcycles. She does seem to grow on him but he teies to use her as a pawn but she screws him and joins team Immortan. But you spot on that this is an incredible villian.

Bro, that's the whole point. Aunty Entity was created to further develop Max as someone who couldn't let go of the past. The Imperator Furiosa was created for Max to relate to her over their shared skills and unspoken past experiences only to seek redemption together. Any bit of character development that Aunty or Furiosa receive actually develops the Road Warrior. When Dementus says Furiosa and him are "the already dead," it's about Max, too.

    Amazing take on Dementus.
I saw it a couple of weeks ago and i think that Furiosa is the best movie in this year that i have seen in the cinema so far.
A couple of people i like to watch on youtube think that this movie is woke but i didn't feel any bullshit from the movie. Furiosa was a clever fighter that's how she won her fights but she got beat up a couple of times. Her boyfriend taught her a lot of stuff so she could get better. I feel bad that it didn't get even at the box office so this will probably be the last Mad Max movie.
    The action scenes were amazing.
Chris Hemsworth showed that he can act very good and if given the chance he can play an amazing Thor.

In oeace his flaws shine so therefore the answer is to constantly be in warfare....hence him taking the citadel/bullet farm. My prediction if he succeeded is the same result of gastown. Dementus uses people like toys, get's bored and moves on to the next thrill.
Immortan Joe uses people as tools and is desperately trying to build a dynasty.
I assume Furiosa will become a leader who treats people like people and build something more sustainable.
Destruction is much easier than creation. In the postapocalyptic wasteland where everything seems chaotic and transient people might wish for something everlasting.
Even Dementus is concerned about making things epic. In his own twisted way he treats Furiosa like a daughter and makes her feel his pain. He might have wanted her to become his little D, his legacy. And in a way she is his legacy, but not in a way he could predict.

    Dementus is not complex
He is quite a simple character
A strong man loses everything and everyone he loves despite his strength .
So he is left with nothing but his strength.
So since he survived he understands the truth .
The wasteland is only for the strong so he spreads his mad realisation.
The weak die the strong thrive .
I will give you an example
Jack was dragged by a bike and died
But max in fury road when kidnapped by the war boys was dragged by a car and didn't die.
That scene shows the difference between the truly strong and those that appear strong.
I.e immortal Joe looks strong but he isn't
Mad max looks strong and he is
    Dementus is undeniably strong
So he seeks to do 2 things
Save the weak by making them strong or killing them in the process of making them strong.
And let's not forget the wasteland brings out the true self of everyone within it E.G mad max was bane in another life hence he had the muzzle that reassembled the bane mask and he basically played bane In mad max.
Bane: GOTHAM IS CORRUPT I will take this City and give it to you the people now go Gotham is yours!
In Mad max bane showed up to the citadel and then gave it to the people in the end and left, he liberated the people because the citadel was corrupt so he took it and gave it to the people just like his plan in dark knight rises.
Dementus is literally Thor in the mad max world
    He had the beard
    He had the cape
He had a mad max version of his chariot.
Thor: The nine realms are in chaos and I will bring them under control.
Dementus literally travels the wasteland with his horde bringing order to the waste land by assimilation or death if dementus never died and continued his quest he would have saved the wasteland.
Miller takes a character's last famous role and makes a mad max parody of it.
If people didn't notice that mad max was basically Bane in the mad max world then these movies are too high of a quality for today's society
Dementus was literally wearing Thor's cape the whole movie if he had a hammer it would have been overkill.
He even says to furiosa I made you strong enough to survive the waste.
Then later in the movie he says me and you and I are the same.
He is basically saying what he always knew about furiosa she was born for the wasteland just like he was.
The only difference is like max he was born when he lost his family.
While furiosa was born to inherit this world .
I.e the first scene in the movie why did kid furiosa not go report the war scouts why did she feel the desire to cut their fuel lines, it was the wasteland and it's glorious fixation to those meant to inherit it.
When her mother was getting killed why did she go back there even though she knew she couldn't do anything about it.
Dementus knew that this little girl was born to inherit the wasteland hence he didn't use her to feed his men, he wanted her to be strong through assimilation and he succeeded because she learned from him and his mercilessness.
    The wasteland has no mercy
So those that inherit it should have no mercy.
    Dementus only made 1 flaw
You cannot make the weak strong
You are either born to survive this wasteland or you'll die trying to survive .
The strong don't kneel or bow and all of dementus's men bowed to him
So in the end he was God with no true followers because they all followed out of fear and not strength.
By the way another Thor reference was the world tree growing out of his loins at the end
Another thing we see In the mad max franchise is that age is the downfall to strength.
Immortal Joe was strong in his prime
Dementus was strong in his prime
Furiosa was strong in her prime
But when all these leaders became older
    Their wills weakened
    Their bodies weakened
    Their minds weakened
Dementus always had a plan in his prime
Dementus always fought till he won.
But once he got old fear started to creep into his mind.
He became savage for savagery sake
Him killing jack and furiosa had no strategic advantage and yet when he was old that's what he tried to do.
He felt himself getting older and weaker so he became more cruel to hide his fading strength ,his men even saw he was being cruel for show and no longer for power and control.
Dementus was not mad or angry
He wanted to share what his all seeing eye saw.
Even his killing methods show you that he is separating the weak from the strong .
    He tortured furiosa's mother
And what is torture if not a test of strength.
Will you break or will you die .
Plus the offer he makes whenever he takes over other clans.
Kill your leaders and friends and only the strongest among you can join my gang.
I.e joker Dark knight making Gambles men kill eachother to join him and his gang.
Remember the joker is not a monster
    He is not crazy
He is just ahead of the curb
    It's not about the money/killing
    It's about sending a message
Chronologically Dementus was the first generation of those born to rule
    Furiosa was the second
    Nux was the third
Splendid's unborn child was the 4th generation
And like Pokémon each generation is more badass, more high octane.
I'm assuming dementus and immortal are around the same age and I'm using them as time stamps
To explain the descent into madness in terms of generations or I should say the Ascension into the normal world within the wasteland.
Immortan Joe's age led to his downfall
Dementus's Age lead to his downfall
The green place fell when only old women were the residents
But it had life when kids were residents
Age plays a role in the wasteland.
There is no place for morality in the waste.
Max tried to blow off nux's hand to remove the chains on himself.
Everyone in the mad max world is a merciless killer
And you love whoever makes it EPIC
That's why we will forever witness Nux and ricktus
    Their deaths were glorious

I agree, best of his performances.
    spoilers
at the end when he begging for death, either slow or fast, and telling Furiosa she'll never get the satisfaction she wants.
that was a gut wrenching performance.

One other thought: when he first gets to the Citadel, he makes a very Trumpy populist speech about being their savior and will provide all their current leaders withhold. Clearly the spiel he's been giving his riding monkeys. But we all know he would be just as brutal and worse, without any purpose other than self preservation. It was a bit of an enjoyable fourth wall break for me.

I thought he appeared as a metaphor for a communist dictator at that point- it's right after he paints himself red using the paint flare, and he literally gives himself the title of "Red Dementus" while giving a speech to the people of the citadel about his supposed promises to make them equal and encouraging them to destroy their master- it felt like during this scene, Dementus and Immortan Joe represented the worst of communism and capitalism respectively- both dictators of either side, and two corrupted versions of each idealogy butting heads.
Immortan Joe hoards everything from his people and makes them think of him like a god, while Dementus seemingly shares everything with all of his crew- but in a cruel way (like giving those people a chance to join his gang by killing one another for a spot in it based on the resources available in that scene where that person gets pulled apart by the bikes) and always selfishly taking whatever he wants and using his people as disposable human shields and killing them for distractions, despite his supposed sharing of the wealth. It also adds some poetry to him becoming living soil for a tree which creates vital resources for anyone who can take them from it without him having a say in the matter- he truly did end up sharing the wealth in that sense, as his ultimate fate.

Great analysis. This point was haunting me the whole movie. I will say though, I did feel that females in the wasteland have no agency in this movie besides Furiosa. That felt sexist in its own way. But I get it. Throughout history, in scenarios as bleak as this, women have risen and taken power, they have survived, and thrived. I felt like George reduced women to victims, which was disappointing. But if we're smashing the worst parts of masculinity. Furiosa pulled no punches

Remember though, that this is a prequel to Fury Road, which was specifically about them escaping that- so of course the point prior to that happening was going to be bleaker- that's what made Furiosa know that she had to risk her life freeing them in Fury Road- this prequel is building up to that liberation- that's why it's far bleaker in that sense, to emphasise the importance of what Furiosa was doing in Fury Road. The ending is literally the start of that liberation happening.

Honestly immortan joe doesnt seem like the type to give women some sort of positional power maybe except for teachers, nurses somewhere along those lines
When the advancements of society technological, moral, social is gone then we retreat to our most primitive ways, but this is also extreme
