    This explains why he did fade away in the movies. With the rebounded killing curse there was nothing left to maintain the body any longer. In other cases the killing curse rips the whole soul (being) but there was nothing for the curse to rip apart only Voldy's body.

    It works, but only if the soul is actually split in half each time (also fun fact, Harry, as a horcrux, was created before Nagini, so by this logic, he is is 2x more Voldemort than Voldemort himself). But when I read the books, I always imagined that only a small portion is split from the soul each time he killed, and if he wanted, he could put the new fragment into an object. Leaving Voldemort with a larger part of "main" soul, which is still fragmented by all the killings, even though he didn't use most of the fragments for horcruxes.
    This would also explain why Harry tried to convince him to regret his actions even after his last horcrux was destroyed. Because the rest of his soul could still be fused together if he did so, giving him a chance for the afterlife

      Since there’s 2c more Voldemort in Harry than in Voldemort it’s always made me wonder “Did Harry’s wand chose him because of Voldermorts soul existing in him and it chose Voldemort’s soul and not Harry”. Cause maybe the twin feather recognized the Voldemort aspect of Harry as its owner.

    I think the logic you have provided makes sense but I also think that they could argue that the spell that is used to create the horcrux could have something to do with how the soul is split. You could argue it could be like cracking a glass mirror and then putting the small shards of glass a side rather than taking exactly half

  • @LuisDiaz-qg3eg
    @LuisDiaz-qg3eg ปีที่แล้ว +10

    He didn't only kill to create horcruxes, he killed for multiple other reasons as well. The earlier ones might work the logic by halving the soul remaining, but for the later ones he certainly outsourced already a minuscule part of soul to the object, because he was able to, because he had already halved it multiple times by killing and the other halves were also broken in pieces while still in his body

    Something else I think could complicate this is his ingestion of unicorn blood through Quirrel. I know it doesn’t explicitly say it has an effect on the size of the soul, but I can’t help but think that it’s cost in giving the one who drinks said blood a cursed life gives some kind of effect on the soul. While I’m on this topic, it makes sense that his soul is so split that without help, Voldemort’s remaining form is shown as a flying ghost head.

    Voldemort reminds me a lot of Melkor/Morgoth, the first Dark Lord in JRR Tolkien‘s legendarium. Melkor started off as Creation’s most powerful being, second only to Eru (God). However, he poured so much of his power and angelic essence (his _fea_ or soul) into the corruption of the world (poetically known thereafter as _Morgoth’s Ring_ or horcrux) that he ended up bound to a physical body with very limited abilities. From drying oceans and breeding monsters, he ended up afraid to face Fingolfin’s challenge (Fingolfin was just an Elf). I’m not entirely sure if Rowling read _The Silmarillion_ but her inspiration lies within Tolkien’s mythology.

    Actually you would dead on this is exactly how JK Rowling described it. Each time he split his soul split apart. The diary definitely got 50% and that's why it was the most powerful that he almost came through the diary as a living being with 50% of a soul. That being said that each time he split his soul he did splitted 50% of whatever he had left between the ring that left him with 25% of a soul and then he split that 25% and so on until he was left with less than 1% of his soul and this is why I believe Harry Potter who also had less than 1% of Vodermort's inside could resist the evil inside his (Harry Potter) 100% intact pure soul. Just a thought. Nagini had more than 1% which made her sweet soul evil

  • @tamarasmith9060
    @tamarasmith9060 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think it does make sense that at least a significant piece of soul, if not half, goes each time he splits it. That's why what's left of his body disintegrates when the killing curse cast on baby Harry rebounds. Normally the killing curse doesn't really harm the body in any noticeable way, yet Voldemort's body wasn't lying there next to Lily Potter's body. He was gone. Poof! Peter/Wormtail took his wand & hid it, & because no body was found there was so much debate whether Voldemort was dead or in hiding because of being hurt.

    I disagree with mathematics is involved. This is what I always thought since HBP. The soul is indestructible but can b damaged. It has been said that murder, not just horcrux making, always splits a splinter shred of the soul away and can only b restored (regrown if non, or pulling back from horcruxes) through genuine remorse. If he won at the Battle of Hogwarts, then Voldemort would've made more to replace what was destroyed. Since he's trapped in Limbo as the raw red malformed baby, unable to to become a ghost or crossover to the afterlife; in my fan-theory, a higher power will send him to Hell.

  • @AustynSN
    @AustynSN ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm pretty sure Rowling has said that Voldemort's soul was split equally between all of the horcruxes.
    She has also said (though not in these exact words) that his soul was damaged and unstable, hence why his soul just split by accident with a piece going into Harry.
    In my mind, every time he split his soul, the new piece was created not just from half of the existing soul in his body, but "stitched together" from all the existing pieces.
    When he made the first, the diary, it was created by splitting his original undamaged soul in half between himself and the diary. When he made the second piece, 1/3 was taken from himself (1/6 total) and 1/3 from the diary (1/6 total). These two parts were stitched together in the locket, leaving an equal 1/3 in each vessel. As it happened each time, the pieces of his soul were further and further patch-worked and mangled, leaving his pieces of soul more and more horrifically damaged.
    In the end, this would leave each piece with an equal 1/7 of his soul. If things were simple.
    The math does get a bit more complicated when you consider that when he made Nagini a horcrux, 1/6 of his soul was already destroyed in the form of the diary.
    I also think that the part in Harry was possibly lost to him for further splitting, though I'm not sure on that.

    (Please read end for a topic/question some friends of mine brought up.)
    With the focus on Voldemort's lessening of his soul, I think it's an interesting take on why he struggled with the power of the Elder wand. That is, if I set aside the knowledge (as I'm aware) that Voldemort wasn't the true owner of the Elder wand. (From what I remember, Malfoy was the true master of the wand till Harry disarmed him.)
    This video was very pleasant to watch and it boggled my mind at the severity of how far Voldemort went. I agree, we don't know how the magic ties in, but I think that it's logical to say that there is a sense of mathematics that can be applied.... And, by definition, this math seems in compliance to the description of 'splitting the soul' that was provided by Slughorn. (Edit: I do note someone mentioned that it was a 'piece' and may not have been a full half. It's also a good point. Either way, the more pieces, the more damage done to what remained of his soul in his body.)
    Side note: Some friends of mine and myself were talking about this vid, and it suddenly turned into talk about tuitions and taxes. Funnily enough, I'm curious how and if this applies to the wizarding world. There's no mention of tuitions, so Hogwarts is open to students freely, so is there a tax system through the Ministry of Magic? How are teachers paid? How are workers at the ministry paid? I would like to know your thoughts, HPF, and community, if you have any on this!

    Considering his extreme narcissism, selfishness, unquenchable lust for power and control, his lack of sympathy, empathy, kindness, remorse, guilt and inability to forgive, the glee he felt in torturing whomever he was upset at, and taking pleasure in killing all that is innocent and good in the world, I firmly believe that the "Less than 1% of his soul remained in his mortal body" hypothesis has ALOT going for it. I would very much lean more towards that way of thinking as opposed to equal parts of his soul in each horcrux as well as his mortal body, which would have been about 12% and some change.

    I feel like one of the more bigger draw backs of creating a horcrux is the near inability to choose what object is the receptacle. Like it seems like he DID choose them, but in every form of horcrux creation we've had explained to us, it actually seems like it just hooks onto whats closest to which case like itd be pretty damn inconvenient for it to latch onto a unhideable object. like a statue or something. Like sure it could theoretically be hidden, but thats like trying to find a needle between two toothpicks, atleast with the smaller objects, they can be hidden much better.

    Each murder Voldemort committed split his soul in Half:
    ) 1/2 - The diary - the largest and strongest horcrux;
    ) 1/4 - The Haunt Ring/Resurrection stone - Mortally injured Dumbledore;
    ) 1/8 - The Slytherin Locket - Boggart inside that reads you mind; sees your fears;
    ) 1/16 - The Ravenclaw Diadem - Said to grand magical knowledge, but was cursed to bring insanity;
    ) 1/32 - The Hufflepuff Cup - supposed to grant health and longevity; cursed to bring death instantly;
    ) 1/64 - Nagini - Voldemort's most loyal companion and confidante using parseltongue.
    ) 1/128 - Harry - The horcrux Voldemort did not intend. The weakest, and easiest to resist ... Once Harry understood.
    By Harry' horcrux creation, Voldemort's soul was so fractured and weak, he was unable to overcome Lily's ancient protection spell on Harry. It destroyed his body and turned him into a mist ...a phantom....nearly powerless.

      actually, Nagini was made an horcrux months before the Dark Lord's return to power (as Bertha Jerkins' death, the death that was used to make Nagini an Horcrux, occured the summer before Harry's 4th years in Hogwarts, so in 1994) while Harry was scarred in 1981. Plus, I believe that Hufflepuff's Cup was turned into a Horcrux while Voldemort was going to Albania to find Ravenclaw's Diadem. So, the cup was the Dark Lord's 4th Horcrux. But, nice work guessing what Ravenclaw's Diadem and Hufflepuff's Cup's defenses would be. I wonder what makes you think that Ravenclaw's Diadem was made an Horcrux before Hufflepuff's Cup.

Ollivander said to simply use another wand, since his and harrys wand shared a core. But when Voldemort tried this, Harrys wand beat the barrowed wand, in the battle of the 7 potters.

    I believe this is how it worked, each horcrux gets half of what is there. But for argument’s sake, say each horcrux gets exactly 10% of the original soul, in the end Voldy is left with only 30% of his soul. Or if you go with the theory that every murder takes 1% of his soul, Voldemort killed how many people? He wiped out entire families for no reason. He killed more of his own followers than his enemies did. Really if the Order could have found a way to send him into a rage while he was surrounded by his followers, they could have let him kill them all.

  • @bcgrote
    @bcgrote ปีที่แล้ว

    The question is, when a horcrux is destroyed, where does the soul bit go? To the afterlife, or back to its earthly home? I suppose anyone else who died by basilisk or fiendfyre is in the afterlife, so we probably could say that happens...
    But if not, then at the end of book 1, he would have 50.78125% of his soul, and he would get back another 25% from the ring by the start of book 6. The locket getting destroyed would net him just a smidge more, as would all the rest of the horcruxes remaining.
    If we say basilisk blood or fiendfyre destroys the item and sends the soul away, then the book, locket, cup, diadem, and snake were lost. Do we know how Dumbledore slayed the ring? Some say he used the Sword of Griffindor, but he would only have the use of 1 arm by then... Harry was killed by Avada, but can Avada kill a horcrux? Certainly Dumbles would have tried that first...
    More questions, lol.

    I think first we have to figure out exactly what a soul is. Is it a material object that can be split in ways that we would associate with tangible things or is it a metaphysical entity that can be infinitely divided without being reduced.
    Can the split portions of the soul grow back or repair themselves? If Harry had died in the chamber of secrets would Tom Riddle have come back and there be two Voldemorts? What is keeping the other horcruxes from doing the same and eventually having 8 voldemorts?

Your soul is supposed to be your identity, personality, memories, passions, dreams, desires, thoughts and imagination etc all rolled into one intangible part. What if each horcrux takes away from just one of those aspects? In that case each horcrux would take away a different amount of soul, one person may be more passionate than another so he would lose more of his soul if that horcux was made from your ability to feel passion.

    he struggled to control the wand because it wasnt his, he didn't earn it? I think regardless of power the wand may also not bend to a wielder it believes is unworthy for potentially other reasons like the idea of "cheating". Voldemort stole it from the grave of somewone he thought it was his owner but wasn't, he killed snape as a prophylactic measure in addition to not using either his own origonal wand or attempt with the elder to do it. I can't help but feel the elder wand clings to power of might in it's wielders but does not aprechiate those that essentially cheat their way to that power. You could even also see the elder wnad being potentially offended by a user that has created horcruxes as they repesent a form of magical cheating.

    I suppose if a soul is immortal, it could be said to be infinite. Infinity divided by anything is still an infinite number. Just a idea.

    I think that only the part of the soul that splits from commiting the murder is able to be used for the Horcrux and i doubt it is 50%. To be honest i feel Voldemort lost more of his soul via non Horcrux Murders compared to the Horcrux ones.

    You justified your stance. However, I'm not sold. Voldemort creates the diary 1/2 - 1/2. Time passes and he operates fully. So each future would still halve the new whole.

    Is it canon that the soul splits in half or just that it splits? For physical things, it requires deliberate effort to get halves. If you break something, a board for instance, it won't break exactly in half.

    Narigi was after Harry
    Harry Halloween 1981 and Narigi summer 1994
    If we do follow the half thing Harry was more Voldemort than Voldemort for most of the story

    To say that he had less than 1% of his soul left because he kept splitting it evenly is probably wrong.
    But without a better explanation as to how the soul splits during the ritual of making a hoacrux, we can't really say how much of the soul splits off

  • @jkrause365

    The math works. I'll concede that. But the reason he couldn't master the elder wand is because he never won its loyalty. The wand belonged to Draco Malfoy, then passed to Harry Potter when he defeated Draco and captured the wand. Voldemort merely stole it from Dumbledore's grave.

    So if Voldemort became immortal at 16, does that mean that he still technically has a 16 year old body? Or at least had one right before he tried to kill Harry?

      Not necessarily. Nicholas Flammel was immortal because of the elixir of life made from the philosophers stone, but I think he kept slowly aging.
