I just cannot stop hitting the replay button for this song. It brings back memories from childhood and when it was sung at my bar mitzvah. This song just brings to mind so many memories of happier and more carefree times.
😭😭😭😭👍👍👍👍joni Mitchell Is a part of my life and i listen her from 1975 and now i'm 61years old....THANK YOU BOB! and now is time to remember and cry ...bye bye😭😭
My Grandma used to play this song in the car wherever we were going. I haven't heard this song in so many years and hearing it now makes me cry. Thank you for my trip back to memory lane =]
My school choir sang this in Middle School, and I have always loved it. I sang it to my daughters when they were young, and even though they are in their 20s now, they still ask me to sing it for them. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.
Very nicely done. Thanks. A decade back now, I lost a son at 20. When this song plays, his memory lives again for me. I'm grateful for that. And for the 20 years we had. Love your people well. Today. _________
They played this song at my high school graduation... my first grade teacher taught it to us as little kids. it meant nothing to us then. but at graduation the real meaning of the song hit... most of us had hit the point where we were dragging our feet, trying to slow the circles. This song means so much to me... I'm glad I can find it and relive the memories of high school.
Thank You very much ! Such a beautiful and heartfelt song & video !First heard this when I was 5 - understand it better now that I'm 64.Can't help shedding tears of joy and sadness.
This is a beautiful song. I leanned it when I went to camp one summer and never forgotten it. Beautiful images..thanks it made me look from behide from where I came.
Always loved the song! Joni wrote it a few years after my son was born. I first heard it in the early 70s and was moved, thinking of the child we had and how we were all part of The Circle Game. Wonderful pictures to go with the song - you've really nailed it. Thank you!
Ah, such sweet sentiments! Thanks for sharing them! Congratulations on become empty nesters. I retired four years ago and was looking forward to being an empty nester. However, my adult children didn't cooperate. My adult daughter did finally move out a couple of days ago, but my 31-year old son is still hanging around. Sigh. Anyway, best wishes to you, and thanks for the kind words about my video.
I believe the first time I heard this song was at a concert or something, I think it was a Christmas concert or maybe a talent show or something, somewhere because I remember someone sang a Christmas song. But then two people came onstage and sang this song. For the longest time I remembered the song though being at the young age that I was, I had somehow forgotten the name of the song. But then one day I could not stop trying to remember the lyrics. I could only remember the verse about the painted ponies. Took me a while until I stumbled upon this, and oh my goodness it's just as good as when I first heard i. Now that I'm much older then I was, I now understand the meaning of the lyrics. Don't take life for granted, treasure every moment to look back on, even if you can't go back. And don't try to hurry life along, or you'll come to regret it.
I cried and my grown son said " I haven't heard that since you used to sing it to us around six years old." thank you and btw I sing it to my grand kids.
Thanks for your kind words. This is one of the most enjoyable videos I have created, although I'm sort of disappointed that it doesn't have more views. That's OK, though.
I too, played guitar and sang this for my children growing up. I was also known as the mom who went from classroom to classroom singing it. It is THEE song of childhood for our family. Joni is an amazing artist: vocally, lyrically and through her paintings as well. She said she considers herself a 'painter first' before a singer. She's changed like a butterfly over the years. I love her smoky blues of present. Outstanding job on the video, Bob. I'll look up more of yours. Thanks for this. : )
after seeing this song near the end of Married to It....i looked it up and found your delightful visuals that melded so well......thank you ....for you vision....
Thanks, Bob! That's one of my main goals in making these videos, to enhance the music. I'm glad I was successful this time. I think often we listen to, say, a song on the radio and we're only sort of half listening to the words and the message and the story. Maybe enjoying the melody, tapping our toes, and there's nothing wrong with that. But I think actually sitting and watching a video where the images are at least loosely tied in with the lyrics (and the lyrics are also on the screen) result in a bigger impact. If you liked this video, check out my video for a song in a similar vein, called "Fireflies" : Faith Hill - Fireflies. Sort of the same theme as "Circle Game" but from a little girl's perspective.
I still love this and get teary every time I see this. I first learned this song at summer camp 38 years ago. Every time I hear this song it takes me back to a night around the campfire with so many friends singing this together late in the evening. Thank you so much for putting together this beautiful video. I've seen it many times and I'm sure I'll see it many more times.
I love this!! I have four boys and when my oldest was about 3 months old, he became a bit "colicky" and would only quiet down and sleep when I played this.......he's 20 now and the others all teenagers and driving..YIKES! This really tugged at my heartstrings....that last frame took me right over the edge--still wiping away the tears..very sweet! Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks. I'm going to use this in my ESL classes. The pictures go perfectly with the lyrics to help students recognize vocabulary in context and create visual connections for them to remember. Excellent!
I hope you don't mind I just shared this on facebook and marked it "For my children and their children." My goodness my circle is spinning faster and faster!
Lol, I agree with you. But then again, it's no surprise considering which shows on TV are viewed most often. (can't figure that out either! ;) And yes, I think you did the song "justice"! One of my old time favorites. It takes on more and more meaning as the years go by, doesn't it??!!!!
That is absolutely stunningly beautiful. I searched for this song, as its one of my favorites ever. So glad I found this one. Wonderful job. I always cry hearing this song.
The reason we're done is because we are both wasting each others time. I am not going to change your mind, you are not going to change mind. I've made my beliefs clear, you've made yours clear. At this point we are simply beating our heads against the wall. There's nothing to be accomplished. And I do have something to accomplish right now. I am in the middle of teaching Vacation Bible School and I have lots of work to do. I don't have time for futile arguments. I hope we part on peaceful terms.
Thanks, @RichardFeynmanRules. Interesting choice of words, "wedding of music and images". That's sort of my goal when I make these things. I take a song that is already fantastic on its own merit, both the lyrics and the melody, and then I immerse myself in the song and capture what I envision. Then I use the wonderful tools of the internet to embed my visions. I'm a pure amateur at this, but I've gotten a little bit of a knack for imagery matched up to lyrics.
Bob Marshall, thank you. Joni's song has been a joyful and comforting companion most of my life, and she has aged like fine wine, an artist in every sense. She lives with her paintings, seldom listens to her own recordings - not a captive, as it turns out, and looking outward more than back. But you have shared and decorated one of her finest perceptions. I'm re-listening on the eve of Independence Day in a year of plagues; a good time to reflect on the spiral of life and transformation.
Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate that. Yes, it is one of my favorites, too. The first version I heard was by Buffy St. Marie. That was a good one, but the original is probably better.
+Bob Marshall: Thank you for that. I can hardly say what I like more: Your pictures or the music. I like them both. -- Hans Rosenthal (A.H.R.D.) PS: And what I like most is the combination of both, the proper illustration of an eternal song.
Thanks, Hans. Yes, that's my goal with these videos, to pick images that enhance the lyrics. Some people think I go overboard and become too literal in my vision of the lyrics, but most people seem to like what I do.
Thanks for sharing this great video version of Joni's song. I plan to show my 5th grade students as we begin to read Tuck Everlasting. It's nice that there are songs and videos available that aren't rated R. I saw the comment about the number of views not being as many as another video, remember it's not always about the number but the impact on those who do view your work.
+Vicki Johnson I first heard this in 1969 when my 4th grade teacher suggested I use it in the soundtrack for the movie we were making about our 4th grade year. Play those great and beautiful songs that mean the most to you to your students! They will always remember great music. I started playing guitar just before this and learned to play the song because I thought it was so simple, true and perfect. The other song we put with "The Circle Game" was "Golden Slumbers" off Abbey Road. 1968-1974 was the time of the greatest music, bar none.
Lindylu52 Thanks for the nice comment. Yeah, I do think this was one of my better efforts, if I do say so myself. Here's a fairly similar nostalgic video I made for Faith Hill singing "Fireflies". "Circle Game" is about a boy, "Fireflies" is about a girl. Faith Hill - Fireflies
really terrific imagery on this video, along with easy-to-read lyrics. I teach English as a Second Language and my students really enjoy this--as do I. Thanks!
Thanks for your kind remarks! But the only reason the imagery in my video is so good is because the imagery in the lyrics is so good. I mean, you hear a line like "caught a dragonfly inside a jar" and you think "hmm, what kind of image can I use for that line? Hey, I know, I'll find a picture of a dragonfly inside a jar!" True, it's not easy to actually *find* such an image, but I've got decades of experience doing internet searches; I know my way around. Check out my video for Faith Hill singing "Fireflies." Lots of imagery there, too, and a similar theme. Your students, especially the girls, would like that one, too.
Bob, you sound like a cool guy. Happy New Year brother, all is well when intelligent people discuss things civilly. Thanks for putting up the tune. that's what got me started in the first place. Peace and love to you and yours.
I understand that. My wife and I have that same argument all the time. It's important to preface a remark with "well, I think that..." rather than just coming across like "well, you're wrong, this is the way it is...". My wording did not make it clear that I was simply stating my opinion rather than dismissing the other person's opinion. I thought it was sort of implicit that I was stating my opinion, but I guess not. I'll be more careful in the future.
Yes, I am indeed a "cool guy". Because the name of the town I live in is Cool. Really. I live in Cool, California. You can look it up. It's in the Sierra foothills near Coloma, where the 1849 Gold Rush started.
Thanks for your kind words. And, yes, "levelheadedness" pretty much describes me in regard to negative comments, not only for this video but for all of my videos. There are exceptions, though, when people cross the line. Then I strike back. But in general I let people speak their mind, since I believe in free speech. And I am free to respond. I try to do it civilly. Most people don't. It's sad that the internet has introduced a lack of civility. I try to uphold civility.
OK, fair enough. That's an excellent point. I should have done exactly that. In my mind all of the statements you suggest seem to be implied (at least from my perspective I assume they are going to be taken that way), but it's better to be explicit and leave no doubt. However, my heart is in the right place here, just trying to help someone out, and I think your lambasting of me is way over the top.
@fawn2011 Thanks for the kind words. Sort of balances out the person who sent me a private message that said that the song was nice but that the pictures I used were "cheesy". I told that person "fine, if you like the song but not my video then just minimize your browser and listen; no need to make rude remarks"
Take Your Time, It Won't Be Long Now..Till You Drag Your "FEET" To Slow The Circles Down. We Can't Return We Can Only Look Behind From Where We Came, And Go Round And Round In The Circle Game. AND PROMISES OF "SOMEDAY" MAKE HIS DREAMS.
Wow, what a nice video for a beautiful song. I've watched some good videos today, but this one was so good, I just had to stop and say thank you. I just bookmarked this so I can find it again, in case it gets buried. I hope your video gets lots more views. It deserves it.
Thank you for your kind words! I'm a pretty modest person, but I agree with you, I think my video did make the song better. I attribute 99% of the goodness of the video to Joni Mitchell, and 1% to me. So, see, I did improve it by 1%!
i feel like my life lasted 30 minutes listening to a 4 minute song. i don't know if that's good or bad. im assuming it's good because it made me feel like a 6 year old again... having time feel like it was forever.
And, yeah, for at least the third time now, I agree with you that maybe I should make it clear that my beliefs are my own personal beliefs. And, again, for at least the third time I think everyone understands that's implicit. For example, when I'm talking about baseball, I may say "the Red Sox really need help in the bullpen". I don't say "Personally I believe the Red Sox really need help in the bullpen". Not a perfect analogy, but you get my point.
Well, if you pull out your Bible you will discover that life is not temporary. Yes, life on this earth is temporary, but this earth is not our home. Our home is in heaven. John 3:16 promises that we can have eternal life if we believe in Jesus.
I'm not sure it's relevant that I created the video, but maybe it is. Anyway, it's not my "right" to steer people to the Bible, it's a command. As a Christian the Bible commands me to do that. I'm not going to shove my beliefs down anyone's throat or try to drag them kicking and screaming into Christianity. I am only called to share my beliefs, not coerce anyone. And that's all I've done, is share my beliefs with this person. She can take it or leave it. Geez, chill out.
Well, I think that the internet has fueled the lack of civility, since you don't have to confront people face-to-face. You can hide behind your keyboard and write things that you would not say to someone in person. And the more often you do that the more bitter and less civil you become.
I just cannot stop hitting the replay button for this song. It brings back memories from childhood and when it was sung at my bar mitzvah. This song just brings to mind so many memories of happier and more carefree times.
Truly a gifted Poet , more than a Singer!
Faithfully Yours,
The Rev. Derrill B. Manley, Ph.D
😭😭😭😭👍👍👍👍joni Mitchell Is a part of my life and i listen her from 1975 and now i'm 61years old....THANK YOU BOB! and now is time to remember and cry ...bye bye😭😭
I never stop love this song. There is something very true in the words, lyrics....now sort of tears coming...
My Grandma used to play this song in the car wherever we were going. I haven't heard this song in so many years and hearing it now makes me cry. Thank you for my trip back to memory lane =]

Very nicely done. Thanks.
A decade back now, I lost a son at 20. When this song plays, his memory lives again for me. I'm grateful for that. And for the 20 years we had.
Love your people well.

An old favorite of mine.... all the more poignant at this point in my life. Thank you.
They played this song at my high school graduation... my first grade teacher taught it to us as little kids. it meant nothing to us then. but at graduation the real meaning of the song hit... most of us had hit the point where we were dragging our feet, trying to slow the circles. Soul to Soul ........
My oldest daughter turned 21 years old today. I feel this song so hardcore. I love you Alison Virginia 💜
Beautiful song! I love Joni Mitchell. Every time I listen to this song, I break down crying.
makes you realize just how short your kids childhood really is..makes me miss those early days with them.
Thank You very much !
Such a beautiful and heartfelt song & video !First heard this when I was 5 - understand it better now that I'm 64.Can't help shedding tears of joy and sadness.
Beautiful video. It brings the song home no matter what your age.
Thanks Bob. I lost my Dad recently and had forgotten about this song. Memories of my childhood poured back when I listened to it.
One of the most beautiful songs by Joni Mitchell. One of my favourite songs by her.
This is a beautiful song. I leanned it when I went to camp one summer and never forgotten it. Beautiful images..thanks it made me look from behide from where I came.
This is beautiful. I am someone who has watched a child grow up and wondered "Where did the time go?" Thank you.
no it isnt
What wonderful photos you found to express these true sentiments. Thank you!
Love this song and Joni....It is a song that is so very true!!
thanks...forgot how much i loved Joni...passed it to my kids and they loved it
Tremendous wedding of music and images. Bravo!
Havn't heard this song since the 70s. Im crying as i watch it because it reminds me of my mom whose gone now.
Great post and and an even greater song by a true MASTER... I love you Joni!
The lyrics to this song are pure poetry. That's what so many don't get about Joni. She's a real poet, who happens to be a musician.
A beautiful and profound song, sung beautifully, by Joni. I very much enjoyed the lovely video that accompanies this classic.
Always loved the song! Joni wrote it a few years after my son was born. I first heard it in the early 70s and was moved, thinking of the child we had and how we were all part of The Circle Game. Wonderful pictures to go with the song - you've really nailed it. Thank you!
I've watched this a few times over the past year and it always makes me cry. BEAUTIFULLY done.
Sigh. I grew up on this music, so lovely!
Beautiful compliment for a beautiful song; Thank you!
So very well done. Thanks, Mr. Marshall.
Nice, Joni Mitchell is an amazing artist
Thanks for your kind words. This is one of the most enjoyable videos I have created, although I'm sort of disappointed that it doesn't have more views. That's OK, though.
Thank you fro making this wonderful video! It enhances the beauty of the song a thousandfold.
A magnificent collage of pictures to go along with one of my all time favorite songs. Great job!
after seeing this song near the end of Married to It....i looked it up and found your delightful visuals that melded so well......thank you ....for you vision....
Great..........
You really did what you think, thanks so much for sharing.
I shared, watched 3 times, and cried each time. The song alone never did that to me, but the video added did it for me. Love Joni and always will.

Thanks. I'm going to use this in my ESL classes. The pictures go perfectly with the lyrics to help students recognize vocabulary in context and create visual connections for them to remember. Excellent!

Thank you for your kind words! I'm a pretty modest person, but I agree with you, I think my video did make the song better. I attribute 99% of the goodness of the video to Joni Mitchell, and 1% to me. So, see, I did improve it by 1%!
Feels.
Memory's though why did I click this😭
i feel like my life lasted 30 minutes listening to a 4 minute song. i don't know if that's good or bad. im assuming it's good because it made me feel like a 6 year old again... having time feel like it was forever.
Agreed. I'm surprised TOM-FM didn't pick him up. He'd fit into their "We Play It All" style.
Wonder Years
Well, I think that the internet has fueled the lack of civility, since you don't have to confront people face-to-face. You can hide behind your keyboard and write things that you would not say to someone in person. And the more often you do that the more bitter and less civil you become.
