Then I read all the negative comments, of all those smart people knowing exactly what he should have done, how easy it would have been to get out the way and even what his intentions were and so on. This made me feel bad for the whole sport, though ofc I should know better than to judge anything by reading online comments.

It was my first time spotting and I did not really know how to react but I feel thankful when players thank me. The task is fulfilling enough to do the job with big smile on my face. At the same time I get to see every top player around the world throw accurate bombs past me. The kindness from players is a cherry on top!

Maybe because disc golf started here in the states spotters are just expected, or maybe the professionals at DGPT events here in the states just think spotters should be thankful that they are on the same course as them. My gut reaction when I saw this happen was 'oh come on, you know it's coming at you and you know how backhand rollers shape up, AND it was clearly gonna end up safe in bounds.' Then I stopped to think about the fact that the spotter is trying to look at the OB line, as the disc had previously crossed OB and was still not back in bounds. I also felt like, "how many shots do I watch COMING AT ME vs. away from me? How hard would that actually have been to judge it from HIS perspective?" Have you ever had a groundball come at you in the infield and suddenly it jumps up and hits ya in the chest? Yea... It's easy to judge watching a video but I don't think this is anyone's "fault." People still get hit by balls at PGA golf events. It doesn't mean drastic change is required. It's just unfortunate that this stuff does happen sometimes.

This video is incredible Scott! It is so ridiculous to see some in our community going after a member who went out of his way to VOLUNTEER at an event, to assume that Paul would have any malicious intent is crazy to me, especially hearing what he said about standing behind a tree the next day. There's so many factors that led to Garrett's disc hitting Paul - the hole, the OB lines, the golfer's line choice, inconsistent tee-off timings, and not to Paul's fault but lack of training for volunteers. Perhaps a list of criteria could be given to these volunteer spotters, things such as standing behind trees, popular lines on the holes they're spotting, optimal areas to stand, or just an overall briefing? The people jumping to immediately scapegoat Paul's split-second decision would never put themselves out there the way Paul has, I and many others are thankful for his contribution to the disc golf community, I hope we are louder than the haters.

There’s a clear distinction between saying that a guy made a stupid move and saying the guy is stupid. Can we agree on that an act accordingly online?

Thanks for the leadership, Scott. When I see people getting upset it’s mostly about disrespecting the game, or at least a perception of disrespecting the game. Clearly this was an accident, and preventable, and the anger is from a perception of us trying to be cute which impacts someone else’s livelihood. Couldn’t agree more, let’s stop overreacting, and start learning and growing and maturing. So while we command and demand respect for the game and competition, let’s not forget that our fellow friends, fans, and family are also worthy of respect. Thank you for volunteering, sir.

Thanks for spotting and being a good dude and chatting, it's only fair enough that you shouldn't be shamed over this. Keep up your passions and thanks Scott for giving this man a platform. We're human and mistakes happen in all sports.

Hey Paul, thank you for agreeing to talk with Scott and even appear in a video on this issue. I know you'd love to put it behind you, and I agree, we all should leave this in the rear view mirror. I really do understand you meant no harm, and I think most people feel the same. I don't think anyone believes you meant to stop the disc, only that you made the wrong decision and got hit because of it. But I really do appreciate that you regret the decision and that in the end, you wouldn't make it again. I don't question your character, but I was upset (as a fan) that you made the choice you did, like many others.
You should put this behind you. The rest of us will. Just keep trying to do better, and you can make this a positive outcome for others, as well as for yourself. You can tell people about that crazy story you made that one mistake, and give them guidance on how to prevent them from making one like that themselves. You can turn this into a positive experience. In the end it should be. And thank you Scott for letting Paul come on and show his humanity. If he was mean and indignant, that would be one thing. But he's regretful and apologetic, and I think will grow from this experience. 🙂

Thank you, Scott. I think anyone who ever criticises a volunteer is a first-rate a-hole.
And, the 20/20 Retrospectoscope is an abysmal tool to apply to any situation.
To Paul, thank you so much for your love of disc golf, and your dedication to volunteering in our sport. It is much appreciated.
It sometimes slightly frustrates me that every few years there's always another new batch of people who arrive in disc golf, and who assume that disc golf was somehow "left behind" in the Great Professionalization Of Sport In The USA. They think the rules are rinky-dink, and that disc golf desperately needs fully paid whistle-blowing referees in order to become "Truly Professional".
What a load of rubbish that is. It is the self-refereed aspect of disc golf which is a feature of our sport, and *not* a bug. It is what distinguishes disc golf from other sports, in fact. The PDGA has had many opportunities to adopt draconian rules and requirements for top flight events, and it has not gone down that path. Thankfully! Because the PDGA (despite being far from perfect!) do have a full understanding of what disc golf is, and the PDGA board have (over several decades!) shown remarkably consistent good governance in not adopting silly rules or requirements for our sport.
    Long may that continue!

Wow...I'm guilty here...not in a mean way but just on seeing 👀 the clip I was mad he interfered but never considered just how little time he had to see all the angles as a spotter.... that said I'm now (a little) more informed on the duties of a "volunteer" spotter and very impressed with how this man is owning his situation. Thanx Scott for having this guy on and opening myself and others up to the simple facts .... people make mistakes. This guy is definitely a good person n I for one wish him well and say THNX to him for his helping hand and being dedicated and involved with the sport I love.

Character assassination IS uncalled for and I completely disagree that his error was a split second decision. His error was allowing a 5-10 second decision to turn into a split second decision. I volunteer spotted last month. Paul waited far too long to react. GG released the disc nearly 10 sec before the hit, it took a huge hop 6 sec before the hit, took a second huge hop 3 sec before the hit, and crossed the OB line 2 sec before the hit. Reacting incorrectly to the final hop wasn’t the error; the error was failing to react to the release and the first two hops. Beyond spotter responsibility though, there is also room for the PDGA to either amend the rules regarding interference and/or for the dg community to more deeply register the fact that there is inherent risk any time we throw our disc OB and there are ultimately no guarantees our disc will eventually come to rest in bounds.

Thanks for the video. Paul made one mistake. He thought that he could dodge the disc, but it hit a hole just in-front of him and that brought the disc to chest high. You can see what he was trying to do if you watch the replay of the incident. Kudos to Paul and Scott for this clarification of the incident. I call this 1st world problems. We are worrying about a disc golf incident, but there are people in the 3rd world that are worrying about how to feed their family (btw where is the 2nd world). Thanks again Scott and Paul.

Good morning Paul and Scott, I never even thought about Paul having to spot where the disc went out of bounds, that brings a whole new angle to the situation, and maybe before tournaments TD’s should talk to and coach some of the spotters regarding situations like this for Prevention. Scott, you’re awesome for making this video, and Paul you’re awesome for explaining the situation, thanks for your volunteering, Paul! We love you buddy!

There is something very strange that has happened in our society in general in recent times: there is no grace allowed. Blame must be assigned, and there is no such thing as an honest mistake. I am as guilty of this as the next person, maybe more.
This has been a great lesson to me to get back to a place where shit happens, people make mistakes, and we don't need to try and ruin people's lives over it. So, thanks.

I’ve seen a lot on this, but have not personally seen the “judgement of character” they mention. More colorful than “bonehead”, but not assuming malicious intent or character. That being said, it does say a lot of his character to sit down for a video for the world to see. Much respect for that. Please, do better next time, but make sure there is a next time and continue to support the sport that we all love.

Thank You Scott for making this video...This man is a volunteer and an awesome one at that. Thank you Paul for all you have done for the sport. : )

Mr. Stokley, you sir are an amazing ambassador for this sport. This is an incredible testimony of your character and the grace in which you engage with the community. More importantly, you have shared with our younger generations the concept of redemption and forgiveness. I truly feel like the concept of a "road to redemption" has been lost in the decade+ and we do not see this enough in the world. Please except my gratitude for you and your contributions to this sport I LOVE so much!

My critiques in the previous video, while harsh, hopefully were not construed as an inference to bad character. Poor choices were made that led to an unfortunate result. The worst part was it is on video coverage by the most popular disc golf channel.
Paul, if you are reading this, I will say again, I'm glad you were not hurt. A Gurthie roller to the face would probably do more than sting. Mistakes happen, don't let it stop you from volunteering or take away any joy you get from disc golf away. Live and learn.
Scott - you are the man for doing a follow-up and giving Paul a chance to give his perspective. Like the discussion the first video brought, like that you made this video to curb unproductive speculation about Paul's motives. He mentioned he lives in South Carolina, I think it would be great if you (or especially GG) could have Paul as a Caddie for USDGC. Give the story a positive ending.

A lot of people's outrage over this is absolutely ridiculous. They have no actual connection to the situation and absolutely should not have any actual feelings about it. GG is over it, so should all the internet fake outrage warriors out there. He obviously feels awful about and I'm sure it will sit on his conscience for quite some time. Good on you Scott for having him on and giving him a chance to share his side. If there is a patron Saint of Disc Golf, you are it. Paul definitely seems like a good man.

I've spotted quite a few decent-sized tournaments, including OTB. The first thing I tell anyone new is: "Your primary job is to not be in the way, including your stuff. The secondary job is to help the group decide if and where it went OB." Props to Paul for sitting down with a fellow old geezer and owning up to his mistake. That's all it was; a mistake.

Scott I said this on FB on the disc golf discussion page and got amazing feedback so maybe you can get other pros to jump on board and have the PDGA create a by law!!
"PDGA rules need to add something along the lines of if the disc is either intentionally or unintentionally stopped while in play, disc should not be OB but play as in bounds where it hit the person or spectator."
Think you can make it happen!?
And add in there "where it is clear and obvious that the disc will make its way back in bounds" and "if not clear and obvious, the official or the card may make the call for that hinderence".

This is just a reminder to everyone, EVERYONE, that we need to stay aware of what’s going on to not affect play. It will happen again because we’re human but it just needs to happen as little as possible. Next time it could be a spectator or an object left where it could get in the way. We all need to learn from this mistake like we were taught as kids.

This was a refreshing manly way of handling this. Sit down face to face and talk, no behind the back crap. That's one of the reasons they say "say it to my face" I bet most people can't say their "opinion" to someone's face. You see a real human there and your compassion wins out. Thank you Paul for volunteering, you're a good man, don't let the keyboard warriors win. Remember, the empty can rattles the most.
