We’ve had our truck for a couple months and noticed some leaking/water in the bed after rain/washing truck. We ordered the Cybertruck tent and had it installed at Tesla service center and mentioned concern about the leaks onto the tent enclosure (which is in that specific area). We were told that “the tonneau cover is not waterproof!” But since the cover looked noticeably misaligned, they agreed to address it. So they totally uninstalled/reinstalled and aligned the tonneau cover…and it STILL leaked! The culprit was ultimately the sub-standard weather stripping and sub-optimal installation. I followed your excellent DIY hack and am THRILLED to report that after a substantial rain storm, the bed and tent enclosure was dry as a bone! HUGE THANKS for figuring this out and the thorough video on the process. My only (MINOR) critique is that you probably could have covered everything in about 1/2 the length. So maybe offer an abridged version that just focuses on the key installation steps? (Keep Heather in…of course! 😜)
Thank you so much!! My husband is an engineer so he always goes into great detail. He’s always been like that. 😂😊 I’m glad it worked for you.
Watched your video and went out to look at my truck, which leaks on the passenger side front of the bed. Removed the piece and found the foam strip was missing about 12 inches on the passenger side. The rest of the foam was firmly in place, so I decided to go for quick and easy and filled in the gap with some regular foam weatherstrip I happened to have. It seems to have done the job - at least for now. Not as elegant as shown here, but 30 min or so and done thanks to this video.
Great solution. Strange that there is no third party waterproofing kit for the Cybertruck.
Great Fix ! I hope Tesla engineers see this video to help future Cybertruck owners.
Great video and thanks !
WOW! That’s a lot of water, great fix! 💪
Thanks for a great video. I’ll be testing my truck for leaks when it gets here in the next week or two, and will do this surgery if needed. That vault needs to be waterproof.
Definitely going to do mine, rains like crazy in Houston! Picked up truck last week, loving it but wish had FSD already
Great video! My Cybertruck leaks like crazy! I'm gonna follow your video step by step. Thank you for sharing!
Great video thanks for posting it. Just took delivery of my beast and I need to look at the waterproofing of the cover.
That’s it, hopefully Tesla sees your upgrade and makes permanent changes to stop any possible leaks
Well done. I'm bookmarking this for a future upgrade!
This is amazing. I really need to do this with mine since I’m always using the rear half of my bed.
Thank you. It is unbelievable that they live a poor seal like that on an expensive truck like this.
Sickening
Especially after 4.5 years of development
Fantastic video, well done. Step by step. Perfection 👌
Thanks for the great video guys. Although I don't have my truck yet, I'll be looking out for the leak situation. If it does, I'll know how to fix it. Thanks again... subscribed!
I plan to follow this myself. Thanks a ton for making this video!
Awesome video, thank you! Mine should be comign soon and this was a major concern point for me! Going to do it then report back with results!
Really appreciate this video. Have my truck in for the same issue and was told they were ordering a new tonneau cover to fix the leaking, even though I know the issue was coming from underneath that trim piece instead. Mine does the exact thing as yours.
Sent my advisor this video, but just going to get the truck back and fix it myself. That rubber seal should do way better than the foam they would use anyway.
This is SOooo Awesome and Defiantly I WILL be doing this to my CT. Super Thanks for this Helpful video.
Thank you! I’m so glad this was helpful.
Oh yeah I’m doing that!
They really need to redesign the flap or supplement it with a real well fitting rubber overlap seal on the outside from the roof glass. They should also use a snap fit instead of the bolts.
mines didnt even come with the foam piece😂 thanks for this video! very helpful!
Yes, I’ve heard of this. Having no seal at all will definitely not keep water out. This truck is an amazing piece of engineering, but this error was made on the assembly floor. That’s where we come in and customize and improve on what we can.
Great video nice detailed work, we enjoyed it
Thanks!!
What are your thoughts on using an edge trim seal with top bulb? The U shape of the edge trim could mount on the end of the sheet metal while the top bulb would seal where the original foam was suppose to go.
Great suggestion! I think using a correct size edge trim seal with top bulb could achieve a great long lasting seal as well. One of the best things about engineering is that there is always more than one way to do everything. The best products in the world can be improved.
I see you did this about 4 months ago. How is it holding up? I'm gonna do this to my truck and my buddies truck next week. Want to make sure it's worth the time vs waiting for Tsla to hopefully come up with an official/warrantied solution.
It’s been 4 months since we fixed our leaking tonneau cover seal using this method. We still have an absolutely waterproof dry sealed bed. My wife dives this truck daily in Florida through heavy rain at times and even a few hurricanes in the past few months. No more water in the bed. I actually go out to open up the bed and check for signs of water often after driving in rain. It’s absolutely solid. Unfortunately Tesla SC will not spend much time chasing a leaky tonneau cover to make it waterproof, as it’s not meant to be. This is something we definitely can achieve, if having a dry bed is important to you. It was for us. Hope this video helps.
Ironically I am already scheduled to test co-pilot a CYBER-TRUCK at Tesla this morning in Virginia... I am going to RAM this video down the throat of the staff there as the CT BUILD-TEAM needs to be aware of this challenge and FIX ❗
We used to live in Virginia. Have you heard of Short Pump?
@@heathersworld1502 No, but I just saw its above Richmond.... Seriously, you or your husband should go to your service center and make sure that Tesla sends your fix-idea to Austin as it is WONDERFUL !
Thank you for sharing your fix I’m going to do this to my truck. Is there anything else you would recommend? Also how is it holding up?
It’s been over 3 months now after doing this upgrade and the seal is holding up amazing. Been through several hurricanes here in Tampa Florida and plenty of power washing car washes. Absolutely no leaking into the bed of the truck. As far as recommendations, I would assume everyone’s Cybertruck will have a few unique build personalities, so adjust the seal according to your gap size and water entry location. The goal is to form an ultra tight seal. The shape of the seal will also provide the same functionality as a gutter system , catching any small amount water that could intrude and keeping it out of your truck bed and staining your walls with drip marks.
@@JD-nf6hh thank you
Thanks for this! Great help!
I have to give my husband full credit for this one! You’re so welcome!
Tesla has updated this part of the truck and now has a different seal.
great video, thanks.
Neato! Isn't that where the pen^h^h^h battery extender is going to go? That ought to make for some great fireworks!
Hey guys, I’m Ron, I was the one who took delivery of the cyber truck parked next to yours, and we talked inside the Tesla waiting area while they took your truck to address some of the other issues. Anyways, great video, also, I’m having the same exact leaking in the same exact spot. Lol. The Service guys told me that they’re seeing tons of these trucks come in with the same leaking. I really appreciate the tedious filming and I’m going to try and go for it myself and do it. Congrats again on your cyber truck!
Oh my gosh, small world! The seal that my husband used is so much better. We have no leakage at all now. If you have any questions or need help with it my husband said he’d be more than happy to help you out. Congrats to you too!
That is cool
Do you have a large gap between the tailgate end the rear edge if the bed?
Yes, I do still have the gap of about 5/32 inch in the top cover that you are referring to, with the holes still visible. Although, this gap was never the source of the leak. The water intrusion was from the seal mentioned in this video.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!!!
Bravo ..
well done, thanks. had my cover replaced, due to transport damage, and it leaked too. Service said not waterproof, which is unacceptable dor $100,000+ vehicle in my opinion. Time for Tesla to start listening to customers.. 😂
Wow that was amazing! Did Tesla offer to fix it or replace the foam?
Tesla will absolutely replace the original foam strip if you open a service ticket. We chose to not have the same Tesla supplied foam strip installed. I don’t think the Tesla foam strip was made to be waterproof, but rather a protective gap seal. The new updated rubber seal provides better waterproofing and durability in our opinion.
@@JD-nf6hh thank you sir!
This truck is like a prototype. I can’t believe they chose to not make it waterproof when they could have done just a little more.
Damn, for the price this thing costs , they just can't put a decent seal but this cheap moss thing on it ?
When you put the aero cover back on, did you push the seal in, basically closing the little gap inside the seal? Or press it down and like spread the gap apart?
You can do it either way. I just pressed firmly on the cover when putting it back on to make sure the two seals attached tightly to each other. The goal is to form an ultra tight seal. The shape of the seal will also provide the same functionality as a gutter system , catching any small amount water that could intrude and keeping it out of your truck bed and staining your walls with drip marks.
Why not just leave the center track of the weatherstripping intact and place it it seems like it would add more waterproofing than just the interior in the posterior flaps?
Great question. I removed the center out of the new sealing for two purposes. 1st, the wings on both outer sides become more flexible to allow the removable hard top panel seal to squeeze in tight between the gap of glass roof and the metal frame. This creates the better seal. 2nd purpose is to create a water duct system for any water that could make it through the tight seal, to be directed away from the bed of the truck and towards the sides. Think of it like gutters on a home. Water would have to get through both systems before making its way into the bed.
Nice work Tesla should hire you
It's sickening you need to do this on a 100k truck.
it's not your money
I'm blaming Tesla btw.... It's an absolutely garbage design.

⚠ EVERYONE who sees this video should bring this DESIGN-ENHANCEMENT video to the attention of their TESLA service representative so ELON💪❤ can get the message to the FACTORY FLOOR ⚠
Great video. Thanks for sharing this idea and how to do it. 📐🚀
Congratulations, not on the project or the Cybertruck but on your wife. Also, do you have a wrap on your truck? If not, what has it been cleaned with… that sheen looks awesome. Mine has a dull matt finish to it.
Lol..thank you! It’s not wrapped. My husband uses the Chemical Guys Honeydew Snow Foam Auto Wash. It’s PH neutral. Here’s a link to the product on Amazon: amzn.to/4dbABNl
Funny that my S has sunroof that is perfectly sealed, why not use same method on truck!
Where are you located? In Florida by any chance? Would you be willing to do this to mine Ill pay lol
I live in Tampa Florida. I won’t accept payment, but always willing to help out my fellow Cybertruck owners. If you are close by, just reach out and we can get your vault waterproof. Will be easy to achieve. We fixed this on ours over 4 months ago and not a single drop of water has made it into the bed or sidewalls since the fix. Keep in mind that every Cybertruck has a slight variance in the build, so properly identifying where your leak is occurring is important. My opinion, Tesla currently has no product, solution or time to address a leaking vault at the SC. Service technicians at a SC are not engineers. This may require a minimal amount of engineering to get the permanent result many people are expecting. It’s absolutely achievable.
I live in Miami Florida but I definitely would love to get this fixed as I want to have a dry vault…. I’m getting my truck in about 2 months just waiting on my model s lease to end… I will definitely reach out if it’s fine with you…..
Absolutely, I’m in Miami quite a bit. I wouldn’t mind helping you out if needed. Hope the truck works out. Your going to love it!
yes, that is BS you have to do that for a 100K vehicle. Tesla really needs to address that
Why not just take it to the service center and have them fix it?
The seal that my husband put on it is 10 times better than the one that came with it.
Hello, excuse me, what is the size of the gap in the glass where the rubber strip is inserted? Do you have more accurate data?
100k+ car with 7$ foam from home depot, just wild.
It's wild that not everything is perfect..
@@CHITECHDUDE You must never owned a expensive car...
Hi,Heather! can we sponsor cybertruck accessories to your TH-cam channel?
Excellent video and solution, probably over did it and a new fome strip would have worked, but overbuilt nEVer fails.
WhoEVer at the factory installed that foam needs to be fired. I bet they used the last 1-ish foot of the foam roll where the adhesive side sticks to the cardboard part of the inside of the roll. You NEVER use that part of any foam roll, it's trash just like the cardboard part is packaging and not product. Using two pieces might have been forgivable, because it is possible to cut the two joining pieces such that they butt each other with no gap... Whoever did your truck doesn't care about the quality of the job they do and should be trained or fired.
Thanks for the info. There's another issue that's a bit more expensive but for safety it will be worthwhile. The axle bolts have come loose on a few trucks, ruining the splines, disabling without warning. A lock is needed but not it won't be simple.
Nice video. 🤩How can I contact you to cooperate ? We have many useful kit for cybertruck.
Look…As a Tesla owner, I say take it back to Tesla and make them fix it! TESLA that is not within spec! The problem now is that you have did work on it Tesla will say yo you if you have other issues that you voided the warranty. You have had the car for little over a week and you are working on issues yourself….WHY?
How could they have done a poor job of placing that foam seal at the factory. Actually it should have been a rubber seal similar to what’s used in a car door.
Wow ! You guys are HEROS💪❤. As a significant $TSLA shareholder I cannot thank you ENOUGH🙏for your husband's FIX. This helps a "brand-new" stellar product become even BETTER 💪... Thank You both again ❗
Wow, thank you!
lmfao it's a 100k vehicle and it's not even waterproof, StElLaR!
ALL other pick-up truck manufacturers have open-bed cover issues as well... INDEED Rivian's cover was so DEFECTIVE they discontinued offering it as they cannot make it work at all 🤣 So try not to be so jealous of what you will NEVER be able to afford 😆
So you need a diy fix on a brand new 100k$ car? Wild...
Next year, you're gonna have to make your own seals for you brand new fridge.
@@thelemitesunite Enjoy your ford focus !
Open and close it more than 20 times. It looks fixed but will it last. Shame on Tesla for terrible QC. What about things you can't see?
Creative fix but $100k for a leaking seal?
$100k for a project car? Dang.
the fact you need to go through all of this on a $100k+ truck is wild
The competition must be laughing their heads off at this
