George Balanchine! The Ultimate Entertainer! This was so much fun to dance! Mr. Balanchine was so joyful and like a little boy when he choreographed this piece! I'll never forget it! What a blast!
I saw this many times at NYCB, I remember when Suzanne Farrell led the Wrens. The opening section is superb, a marching in of different regiments. Balanchine was a true genius, and I have not seen his dances in so long. This is refreshing!
Can't get enough of this. Fresh, enthusiastic and joyful. The dancers just look like they are having a good time. As a result, so do I. Every time I watch it it's like the first time...
Velocità esecutiva d'acchito in questo balletto che comunica l'esprit de joie della danza .MOLTO curata la coreografia e il coordinamento del collettivo danzante.Molto efficaci e bravi.Bighin GIULIO RENZO
As an expat living in Ohio what a wonderful tribute from Balanchine and ABT-thank you. Macmillan paid the tribute back with Elite Syncopations and the music of Scott Joplin.
How many of you sing along to The Colonel Bogey March?😜 I'm glad I go back to the days when Mr. B. and Mr. R. were running things. I worked one summer at the State Theater and was able to sneak into the auditorium and watch them at rehearsals. Nothing like watching Mr. B. correct a dancer. He was nice about it and it was reassuring to know the next generation would be dancing the real McCoy.
The beginning of this ballet (not shown here) is amazing! It must have taken forever to workout the different military squadrons and small yet precise steps..one of my favorites. This part is cute but not as impresseive IMO.
This is I believe the fINAL section of the ballet and the semaphore is God Save the Queen if I remember correctly there was a couple of other parts one with pearly Costomongers and a donkey
That donkey apparently repeated the role many times and died sometime between maybe 2010 and 2020 (this ballet premiered in 1976; was Balanchine's contribution to the Bicentennial). I was shocked when I read about the death of the donkey and how the same donkey had done the role all those years! Had never occurred to me it might be the same one. I saw maybe the 2d or 3d performance of this work and it was the only time I saw Balanchine go out on the stage and take a bow.
Unfortunately this is after Mr. B died. The original cast and his creations were beyond magnificent. This is close enough but we will never see his trained artists again :(

Lucky you!
Were these professional dancers???………………….
Love this comment. Balanchine, a Russian who truly understood Jazzy Americanism.

Had never seen this and it’s glorious and so is Hershey Kay’s music.

Loved it. Saw the nycb in person and just as much on TH-cam. What a wonderful performance.

This era of NYCB dancers were VERY SPECIAL!
Happy upcoming 4th of July! Great dancing and love the music.

I love the fact that the semaphore alphabet at the end spells "God Save The Queen" - so smart...

How can I find the beginning?!?!
Abby Liddell Sadly, its not online. I've only seen it in person.
Severus Webber The first part is fine but it takes forever to get to the dancing. The Pearlie King and Queen section is also missing.
great!
LOVE IT!!
Balanchine I believe choreographed this to partner Stars and Stripes
I dont know many hours and months they rehearsed to do this show....and I do appreciate their effort
Pure Hollywood.
Pure fun.
Pure American.
