For the very vast majority of people this kind of memory feat, let alone chess playing ability, is bewildering and totally unattainable. Magnus has amazing abilities.

I tried playing blindfold chess against my dad (I was blindfolded and he was not). It was really hard and I couldn’t calculate over 2 moves as I constantly had to repeat where the pieces were in my head. The game was full of blunders and missed wins, but after around 40 moves I managed to simplify from a worse middlegame into a drawn rook and pawn endgame where we accepted a draw. It was an amazing experience!

Yes but here moves doesn't come in order board after board, moves overlap, there is some confusion and it is timed event. GM Timur Gareyev did recently a record of 48 boards. To be accepted as a record opposition rating and final result must be high enough, which it was. .
I hope they're giving him at least a 10 second increment per move, given how long it takes to read out the moves, then for him to say the move back, then the guy to do the move.
When ever Magnus is interviewed he struggles to find words, and express him self. When he plays chess everything falls smoothly on place just like he wants. It's like his brain was made to play chess.
Extremely incredible....Taking down 5 different types of opponents blindfolded itself was astounding and unbelievable...but the difficulty was doubled when the two idiots are attacking Magnus with incessant and mingling updates on boards.
Much more than doubled. I could easily do 5 blindfolded games, even against 1600 rated players, in normal conditions and with 5 minutes on each clocks (and I'm only 2150). But in these conditions I doubt I could even do 3 boards. It's really insanely more difficult..

I am not talking out of my ass anyway. Maybe you think so because you think it's an incredible feat to play blindfold, when in fact most active chess players at 2000+ would be able to play at least 2 blindfold games at once (it's not as difficult as it may seem) and I used to play blindfold bullets for hours with a good chess friend, quite often, even wasted at 5am, when I was still competitively active, so I have a bit more practice than most. I've done 6 games at once to impress family on one occasion and although it wasn't timed, I could most likely have done it with 5 min on my clock (with my time only going down between hearing the move made on a board, and gving my move). I am just saying that to insist on the fact that I would be completely unable to do what Magnus does here : playing several blindfold games in such chaotic conditions, where moves from each boards come at the same times increases the difficulty tremendously.
This is really an amazing performance. Playing 5 blindfold chess games isn't extremely difficult, even with a time limit of 5 minutes per game for the blindfold player, if it's done the usual way with each board played always in the same order (when the opponent playing on board 5 must wait for the blindfold player to have played his move on board 4 before playing his move). But this chaotic simultaneous where the opponents can play whenever they want and the moves are announced immeditaely adds an enormous additional difficulty.. Really amazing...

It's actually quite logical. If you have similar looking positions you might mix them in your mind. Makes it way easier to remember the - different structured - positions. I would do the same.

Magnus is astonishing but unfortunately, he was embarrassingly let down by two incompetent relay messengers who each had a simple job to do but failed to listen out for his moves! Hats off to Magnus for his remarkable talent, for staying calm and not telling those two muppets what he must have thought of them!
if they ever go again for this, I would say each board should have had their own commentator and Magnus' time should only start after the board gets announced to his attention, then clock starts.
Seriously, Magnus keeps 5 boards in his head. These commentators can't even play his moves fast enough. So obnoxious that he goes so low on time on board 2 and 3. He literally wasted 50 seconds off his game clock for one mistake that eventually snowballed to mess with two boards and their time because he had to correct them.
and how does that matter? he (the assistant) still did miserably and caused Magnus to lose on time because he wasn´t able to simply execute his moves in 2, at max 3, boards.
I had a friend beat me blind folded once. I was in awe. granted I'm very low rated, but it went into end game and was still very impressive. this is utterly incredible.

@ XownXihqX In short. First of all, since he is blindfolded, no 'visual snapshot" is taken of the actual position. Therefore, the photographic part doesn't exist. (it is even very questionable if there is such a thing as "photographic memory") Secondly, he remembers the positions as he constructed them in his mind. And they dynamically change each move. If something is missing/gone wrong he is able to recall the moves/positions by going back in his mind and reconstruct, where things like the voice of the person giving him the moves, the moves given to him before and after, a smell, a sound, a thought he had, a calculated variation at the time or any other external factor, help him do that. Thirdly. There is a nice test to show this. If you present Carlsen with a real chess position for a split second he can flawlessly reconstruct it for you on another chessboard many years later. Now, if you present him with a chessboard and 32 pieces randomly placed on random squares he will only be able to recollect a handful or so. This has been tested many times with people like Kasparov, or even me (said the fool). :-) So, there is no "photographic" aspect to his memory. It's just a ridiculously good one. Even eidetic is probably somewhat inaccurate. Google it for more details.
Nobody Really i can tell what his ability is obviously it has nothing to do with a tangible photo but it's a visualizing skill, but if you google eidetic memory it says it's photographic memory in short so that's not the term for this skill.

In 1934 Alexey Alekhine gave blindfold seance of chess on 32 (!!) chessboards against 32 opponents. It is hard to believe but it is true. But it was not blitz chess, it was traditional chess. Current traditional chess record according to Wikipedia is blindfold chess against 48 opponents (Timur Gareyev, 2016). I don't know how the chess players are able to do it. My grandfather was very fond of playing chess and he played good, but he could only play blindfold for first 15-20 moves of the game (and that was against me, who was then 6-year old boy).
The way he remembers every game is by replaying from start if he forgets it. I am an average/good club player and I could play one game blindfolded but it's extremely hard and makes your brain hurt. His advantage is that his openings are wide so that he gets a very early advantage, nevertheless he is capable of inhuman things
Dude calls out a move on 1 or 2 while Magnus is making a move on 4 or 5. Then just let the clock run while calling out moves on 3 and 4. And doesn’t let him know it’s his move. Painful to watch

He knows that what normally they can move against him...on base of this theory he play brilliantly. Focus he has extraordinary memories. We can also do this trick with beginer ,who will play exactly what we want.But to do this we need lots of practice.This all seniors player is just like kids for carlsen , bcz he what they can think ..But carlsen can't do this with anand , kasprove , and other top level gm.
The time thing is so unfair because he is giving the move instantly but they are taking a long time to actually make the move for him and then hit the clock. Can't they figure out a better way to do it?

Magnus is taking 5 boards, blindfold, simul with clocks is mind boggling. Also he is moving from board to board randomly, which makes it worse. He took three boards blindfold before.

They meant against that many players, simultaneously, blindfolded. Admittedly, Magnus had played 10 people blind simultaneously before this event

Lots of players have done blindfold simuls, but not timed and taking moves in random order.
He knows that what normally they can move against him...on base of this theory he play brilliantly. Focus he has extraordinary memories. We can also do this trick with beginer ,who will play exactly what we want.But to do this we need lots of practice.This all seniors player is just like kids for carlsen , bcz he what they can think ..But carlsen can't do this with anand , kasprove , and other top level gm.

The time thing is so unfair because he is giving the move instantly but they are taking a long time to actually make the move for him and then hit the clock. Can't they figure out a better way to do it?
