Meitei history is very complex. Very true. North Indian are treated as 4thclass citizens in India's Manipur. The only problem that most Meiteis have is they hate every other community. Every one living in Manipur knows that. May God give peace of mind to them and to Kuki also to stop this madness.

The marriage between meiteis, nagas and kukis into one administrative unit was arranged or forced by the Britisher and later solemned by Inidan Union.
Now, this forced union is facing tremendous deferences within them and separation seems to be the only option. So, let the present state of manipur trifurcated into three states, each for Meiteis, Nagas and Kukis. And let them do whatever they want to do in their own state. Then....
The meiteis will be allowed to live wherever they want in their own state. They can pursue ST demand without any resistance within.
The Nagas and Kukis will enjoy full control of their land and polity. They can also go for greater Nagaland or Mizoram without any resistance.

This is a good elaboration and gives a comprehensive pic of what is going on in Manipur. There are several factors that went wrong, let alone the impact of colonialism, especially the mindset of divide and rule. The important thing is many communities in India need healing. Acknowledging the problem in the first place is important and no political mudslinging. We can not change the past but definitely make an effort to look forward. The solution must come from the people of Manipur that may satisfy all the communities in peace and harmony.

Sorry to say mam .! It's just a nutshell you need to dug deeper. The kukis were never brought from the chin hills or Myanmar. they were always there in the present day political map of manipur. The problem lies in explaining history of manipur from the present day political map of manipur which is totally different from pre colonial and colonial political map of erst manipuri kingdom. The CRUX of the problem also lies in the shortcomings of colonial account who maintains accounts with a specific purpose. for instance col johnstones account can have different interpretations and narratives. The very colonial map contradict the kuki were brought from chin hills and Myanmar. The very source that you refer i,e the kings Chronicle also mentioned treaties and encounters between the erstwhile manipuri kingdom and the kukis that too before the British occupation of the erstwhile manipuri kingdom

    1. Before the British arrived in Manipur Kukis have been there and they were not under any ruler. We Kukis were against the British itself, so we fought the British for aprox 3 years not in the valleys but in the hills.
    2. The report said Kukis contributed 20% of the state's population, but it is only 14% to 16% max.
    3. She clearly mentioned that the three communities Meitei, Naga and Kuki with the Meiteis living in 10% of the land and the Kukis in 90% of the land. Then where do the Nagas live?
    4. The Maharaja of Manipur merged to the Country India years after her(India) independence with a clear stated land of 700 sq/km. (Valley not the Hills).

Mainland Indians don't know Manipur had its written Constitution adopted in 1947 and a council of ministers headed by captain Priyobrata. Manipur merged with India on 21 Sep 1949 with a written agreement. India adopted her Constitution on 26 Jan 1950. The chief commissioner of then undivided British Assam Mr Quinton and other four British officers were executed in Imphal by Meitei in 1891.
Modern Polo is a gift of Meitei people to the whole world. Indian classical dance Rasleela is another contribution. Manipuri language, the lingua franca of the state, has its own written scripnt.
Bollywood Hindi film's popular music director Sachin Dev Burman was born to a Manipuri Meitei lady named Sanasam Nirmala. (SDB's father Nabadwipchandra Dev Burman was also born to a Manipuri Meitei lady named Keisam Jatiswari who was one of the queens of Tripura King Ishan Chandra Manikya who ruled during 1849-1862. SDB's mother and grandmother both were Meitei ladies. Almost all Hindi film songs of Dev Anand were composed by SDB).

Yes, you can indeed blame one factor. And that's the British Empire is to blame.
What the British did to India and Cyprus Greece and Australia and Africa and China and Asia and Europe is unforgivable and should never be forgotten, indeed.
Britain should be forced to give back the trillions of dollars and other peoples cultural identity artifacts they looted and leave Cyprus Greece too.

Ma'am I would be more happy If you have specified the Manipur kingdom during the British times or before that. It is learned that many families were separated into India and myanmar when India got independence. This means Manipur was having much bigger area before India gained Independence

    • @angelasaikhom805
      @angelasaikhom805 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes manipur was a much bigger kingdom. At one point, it used to include parts of Bangladesh around the Chittagong hill tracts and even extended to big chunks of Myanmar in the east. However, there was constant war between Myanmar and Manipur, so there were fluctuations every now and then. By the end of colonial rule, the Map of Manipur had significant become smaller. In 1947, Manipur had its own Constitution, governing policies and Representatives. A merger agreement was signed in 1949 between the king of manipur and India and it officially became a part of India. However, for the sake of diplomatic alliance, a part of Manipur called Kabaw Valley was offered by the then PM Nehru to Myanmar and monetary compensation was asked to be given by Myanmar.

Indeed it is true like Ms.Palki said that is crucial to understand Manipur's history to understand the conflict.
For millennia Manipur was inhabited by the Mieties and the different Naga tribes. The Kukis as rightly pointed by Ms. Palki were brought in by the Britishers as late as the 1840s.Although the understanding and agreement of bringing in the Kukis from the Chin area of present day Myanmar into Manipur by the Bristishers could have been earlier than that of the 1840s.From a few villages, a mere trickle to today forming 28% to 30% of the population even out numbering the many local indigenous tribes is a perplexing reality.

Palki you have given wrong statistics. The kukis(&Zomis) are around 17%, the Nagas around 24% i.e. 41% tribals in total living in the hills. The rest are meitei speaking population 53%(ethnic meiteis 46% and meitei muslims 7%). These figures are accordingto the 2011 census.

Each Claiming Group can be Called Separately and Asked to Define their Specific Problem Pros and Cons. Then a Central Line can be drawn to connect them to India's Mainstream . The problem is with the land issue. Meitei want ST so that they can buy lands in the hill areas (90%) and to protect their lands. Land protection act for ST and manipur land act ristrict meitei from buying land in hill areas which consist of 90% of manipur.

If the meteis are granted st, the valley based rich people (meiteis) will be able snatch all the lands.
The land is the only thing the tribals have. All the political power, economy and what not are all controlled by the Metei society. So the tribals cannot afford to lose the only thing that the meteis cannot touch. Also the tribals have been subjugated by the meteis for many years now.

It's basically land issue. We are keen on saving our forests and mountains which are being continuously destroyed by the enemy of forest, the kukis. As far as jobs are concerned, I don't think the meiteis will require a quota to compete with a kuki. We can do it without the quota. We aren't afraid of any kuki academically.

Meitei can't buy any land at their hill place however kuki and other tribes can buy land at valley. In short, The valley is overloaded with all community from different states and tribes from hill in small piece of land. So that's why wanna to become st so that they can buy land and stay at other parts of manipur. Valley it's like a time bomb even the meitei staying in valley since ancient time don't have any land left to buy. Even if it's available it's cost core rupee. most of the meitei are middle class n poor thats. Meitei demand is not fr reservation on govt office it's about land or for land reform. I wish the govt do smthng about land reform in manipur, if they don't wanna give st to meitei.
