- Hello everyone and welcome to the first Budget Builds Episode of 2021. Which was meant to be the final video of last year...But oh well atleast its done now. Really this project was entirely a bit of fun. So yes it is quite excessive. Yes it is quite rambling, and yes there are plenty of other points about this video that might seem like they go on for a bit, but thats all part of the fun. I wanted to throw together a PC that celebrates some of my favourite componentsthat I picked up during this last year. Featuring both the Matrox Parhelia, and the Pentium 4 Willamette CPU from not too long ago it is kinda a strange combination. But id be lying if it wasnt cool...So join me for the adventure and the issues.

Heyo everyone. This project has been a bit of a mess, it was a lot of fun to test and build....BUT I did leave the project for about a month due to time constraints. This means it was a bit of a unique experience to make the video, and to actually finish editing it.

@@BudgetBuildsOfficial Something like Analog (OG Cassette recorded back in the day from an analog source) vs Digital might be interesting. And just you recording cassettes wouldn't be bad either, I can't seem to figure out how to make them sound properly. Whenever I record them there's either popping, or white noise, or just something to make it sound bad. There are people who are still interested in vintage audio and who would happily watch such videos is all I'm saying.
@@MrRobot-ry7ky Use dolby noise reduction and quality tape. Everything is already covered by Techmoan and Technology Connections.
@@MJ-uk6lu Dolby actually makes it sound worse in my case. With Dolby it sounds as if the channels are slightly over-recorded onto one another, a sound similar to reel to reel when the tape isn't properly tensioned on the head, I don't know how else to describe it.
@@MrRobot-ry7ky I have heard some things about analog recorders needing some adjustments to be made from time to time for them to work properly. Perhaps yours need that too.
I'm watching this on a Pentium 4 (small form factor desktop computer) which I've purpose built to let me watch modern video streams on a CRT TV!
I just prefer old tvs, so I've been using this as my tv rig for 7 years now (was old enough to be free when I got it)

Old PC with any cable management seems odd
I didn't take it to like the super-obsessive level we have today, but I did try to keep the cabling somewhat tidy when doing a new build or upgrading an older rig. Of course, back then, most folks didn't really go out of their way to show off the interior of their PCs, and certainly didn't go out of their ways to have lightshows.
Though I'll admit I was happy when SATA became a thing. Those old flat IDE cables were not easy to keep 'tidy' with most AT and early ATX machines.
The way they make cases now are so nice and yet like my motherboard is high-end LGA 775 and the case is a lian li. I put this together out of like parts I could find and stuff on eBay My last computer had antec p180. I love that case. But there wasn't really good cable management The power supply was in a strange place The hard drives were in a strange place and a strange orientation and the typical length cables which by then were parallel ATA but wrapped still had trouble reaching everything so I bought a SATA raid card and yes it was software raid for the most part, but it actually supported all the new features like native command queuing and all that stuff and I put together my first volume over a terabyte which I thought was incredible using the four drives and raid 5. The SATA cabling was just so much better I still had to use PATA for boot but cases now you can hide the entire rats nest on the back and yeah without those weird retro future b450 motherboards it does look weird especially since I have modified in AIO cooler but the cable management by itself it's just so much better The only thing missing that I used to have was a blue cold cathode tube, in its place I have some Corsair LED fans not RGB since I don't have RGB headers but I did pick a nice color. Even the cooling is much better because you can line the entire front with fans in the entire top whereas back in the day you might have one of the back one of the front one at the top and even then rarely would you put one in the front. As weird as it is case design has improved by leaps and bounds it was not difficult to connect the USB 3 ports with a PCI express 1x USB 3 card. I want to build a max p4 on the socket before LGA 775 but I don't remember if any of them had PC Express.
Dang, I'm being reminded of how often I installed Windows XP back in the day. Such a nice operating system.
It was such a nice time, good way to make pocket money as a tech savy kid too!
Even in its hay day navigating the internet with XP with out getting a virus was like playing minesweeper without any idea what your doing.
Oddly enough, browsing the internet in 2021 on a fully updated XP (further patched integral edition) and a still updated XP browser like Serpent or Mypal with ublock origin legacy is pretty painless. XP just isn't targeted anymore as it is used by such a small percentage of users. 0.7% or thereabouts. It's completely different from the old days.
2004 browsing with internet explorer was like...open browser.....ten seconds later.....you now have 5 taskbars and the pornads won't stop popping up and every link redirects you to some other virus ridden site. Why is there a scantily clad woman dancing in the corner of my screen? Where is that sound coming from, what is this registration form. Yep time to nuke this install again.

@@V1CT1MIZED im thinking about going from windows 10 to xp full update to be able to get more frames on the back up pc . its got 4 gb of 800 mhz ram ,an intel 1.6ghz e1240, and Nvidia gt 440 1.5 gb ddr3 , a 60 gb ssd. some games really struggle with the low cache and high background usage . maybe linux as well.
I can already tell that it was worth the wait.

@@muhammedaljerari391 * Some Pentium 4s didn't. Even many with 64 bit and NX-bit and all that have no support for certain 64 bit OSes.
Running old systems is a nightmare. I was installing 98 on old terminal-style of PC. It kept throwing me blue screens. I gave up. Came back week later. It worked.....
Loose cable or dirty ram could cause that. Old systems are certainly more finicky.

A Parhelia deserves better than being shoved into a Socket 423 system.
@@johncate9541 Paired a 256mb one with a Socket 478 and tried to run Battlefield 1942 on 1024x768... I don't call 15fps smooth, and putting it on 800x600 didn't improve much either.
Is this just something related to how the card handles OpenGL or was it always this bad on DX as well? The Mystique was great though.
I remember seeing a high end system like a socket 423 Pentium 4, 1.5 ghz, with 256 mb of rdram and a geforce 2 gpu in PC world magazines in January of 2001. However, my very first gaming PC that I built around this time actually had a 1.0 ghz Pentium III cpu with 256 mb of pc133 ram, a 32 mb geforce 2 gpu with creative sound blaster card, and for the operating system, I originally had Windows ME on it, then I later upgraded it to Windows XP in the fall of 2002.
Watching this brings back many memories of setting up these systems when they were new.... Oddly enough I have no desire to build one again, but it was enjoyable to watch..
That's amazing. I have dozens of socket 478 P4; I hadn't even realized there was a P4 chip on Socket 423 until your last video, and now seeing it even be able to (barely) run WIndows 7!
I was way too poor to chase specs with the way moore's law was back then. This is awesome to see stuff I was never able to use

I loved to see this skt 423 content, i wish to have something like this, but my dream still going for 2.0Ghz version + 2GB Rambus + best nvidia agp card with hardware acceleration to try to play some multimedia content
Unless you have easy access, agp cards have gotten really expensive as collectibles, it might be easier to find pci cards like the rage pci on amazon
AGP is getting very hard to get ahold of, I’d suggest trying to grab some Matrox stuff while it’s still under the radar. Awesome feature set albeit lacking in performance sometimes.

It's definitely possible, I grabbed one of the few 2 ghz chips left and put it into a Dell Dimension 8100 with 1.5gb RDRAM and a MX 440 (far from the best AGP nvidia lol); it plays this video at 360p and I left a comment from it a couple minutes ago lol
I have an AGP HD 2600 Pro in my Athlon XP machine, it runs games better than most of the older Nvidia cards(and still has all features enabled under the XP drivers) I’ve even installed windows 7 with aero and have watched modern TH-cam videos(when TH-cam supported the older Firefox)

The problem I have with Pentium 4 retro builds is that I still think of the P4 as "modern", so I end up asking too much out of it, get mad it can't and put it away.
I built a socket 423 retro PC for windows 98 gaming about 2 years ago. Used a 1.7GHz P4 cpu and a geforce4 Ti 4400 along with a sound blaster live. It's a very stable and competent system. Never had a single issue in 2 years. I like how unique the build is, and the hardware is relatively cheap (at least it was last time I checked). Socket 423 gets no love, but it should given how affordable it is, and how well suited it is for windows 98 games.

I had an overkill PC from this era! (Well, maybe a year or two earlier)... It was a Win2K Dell Dimension with a 1.7GHz Willamette P4, GeForce 2 Ultra, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card, 768MB RAMBUS, dual DVD drives (one burner) and a 20GB hard drive (later upgraded to a 160GB drive during an XP upgrade). The thing was a monster for it's time! I always wanted to max it out with 2GB RAM, an AGP GeForce 6 series and put Windows 7 on it with aero running in all it's glory, but the thing died before I had a chance.

I'm about to embark on a socket 423 build myself, and enjoyed watching your video. Oddly enough, I was thinking if you haven't tried running this PC on Win98, you are probably not truly getting the best experience out of your CPU and motherboard. I'm planning on giving Win98 a go myself, and I intend to build the "ultimate" Win98 Pc (as my spare parts bin allows). Probably an Aureal Vortex 2 for sound, and I was planning on using an Asus Geforce graphics card that supported their "3d" glasses. A neat toy I've never had the chance to enjoy. Anyhow, I appreciate your work here and will learn from your experiences should I decide to make this a dual boot system. Cheers! 🥃

Well worth the wait! Reminds me of the days I'd use Limewire to download hacked versions of Limewire Pro and absolutely destroy the family PCs in the process. Can't wait for the next video!
775 socket Pentium 4, was the moment that I felt I was living in the future of computer gaming. I remember thinking "it cant get any better than this."
This was about the time I turned into a PC enthusiast. Nostalgic. My first build had a Intel Pentium 4 Processor 670 socket 775.
How it is overkill? When the Parhelia came out in 2002, Geforce 4 cards and even the older Radeon 8500 were faster and P4 were already well above 2Ghz. It may be overkill for playing games older than the Parhelia, but that GPU even struggled to run contemporary titles.

Nice. In my pre-/early teens and after my first 3D card Voodoo1 I always had Matrox accelerator cards in my computer for years: Millennium G200, G400, G550… because I was able to get them basically for free through my close relative. Rest of my system probably never was quite up to the latest hardware, but at least graphics card was there. Only issue with them and I’m not sure if issue was with Matrox or me as a user, but when it came to gaming, you had to wait some time for updated drivers to run latest games properly. I think they had some driver issues when compared to competitors.

Sound issue - try in another slot as PCI slots would share IRQ's with onboard I/O.
I should dig out my SB live 5.1 platinum - now that would be overkill for this.
Also XP you have some settings in device manager that help DMA and IRQ, do not recall which ones in device tree you need to change but go thru them and see what settings they have.
But then this is the era of plug and pray, so you had to get your hands dirty.
Oh disabling parallel port/serial etc that your not using in bios also helps with those IRQ's.

Yeah I still remember some of the old hardware I used to run on my socket 370,423,478 setups. Hmmm Voodoo 3dfx, Iomega Zip drive, Plextor CD burner and my favorite Creative Soundblaster Extigy, those were the days lol!

One of my very first PC's that I "modded" (meaning: changing everything, except the motherboard and the CPU/cooler) was an old HP Vectra "VL420" SFF machine that had a 1.6 GHz "Willamette". I ran both Windows and Linux on it and it was a smooth machine.
I remember eventually retiring the machine with a bit of sadness.

A nice build. Also, ut2004 (before and after patch) and battlefield-vietnam (and bf1942 secret weapons of ww2) would be cool on that (along with dark mod, thief3 and the original doom3). A pity you did not test out the soundcard for surround-sound performance clarity and midi chipset. Well done on win7 despite the struggles (from possible bandwidth range between usb and soundcards). Slackware would have worthwhile too for WINE.
Socket 423! Reminds me of my old Dell Dimension 8100 I still have kicking around. Started life as a 1.5GHz (Willamette) with 256MB RAM, and I think a Geforce4 MX440? Over the years I had upgraded it to 2.0Ghz, 1GB RDRAM, and several video cards culminating in a Geforce 6600GT of all things (I think it was one of the last offered for AGP). Even has a SoundBlaster X-fi card in it.
Great to see someone making videos telling the story of the performance of "previous modern marvels". Had a Pentium 4 and loved its performance. Had a i5 and loved its performance. Had a i7 and loved its... you get the idéa. The system is made to sell us a new system, paired with new tech that is far from optimized. The performance dip of the change between Windows XP and 7 is proof of that. The new OS makes the old things slightly more difficult to keep running, through new processes and lack of efficiency due to more potential hardware innovation. Perhaps if we would write more efficient programs we would not need the constant upgrade.
For most of those games you used the early P4 was really on it's last legs at that point. The latter P4s that came out had basically double the clock speed of the one you have there. The Pentium 4 HT came out around xmas 2002 and was just monumentally faster.
Imagine if today you had a 10900K at like 4.8GHz and then Intel two years later releases something that does 9.6GHz because that was basically the equivalent performance boost on paper.

Man people really love to hate on the P4. I LOVED my P4--it was one of the best computers I've ever had, and I used it for a really long time, skipping the Core2 days until I finally got a 1st gen i7.

I have Windows XP system, with northwood 478 @3 ghz, 4 gb of crucial ram, ssd, Radeon HD 4650, and a bunch else. I joke it's "one of the fastest slow computers" . Of my 6 machines it's my favorite and I use it for modern tasks often instead of firing up a modern machine. It really is a sweet spot in tech

Vintage PC builds always intrigue me, but I can never get past the fact that they are old and slow when put under heavy load. Sometimes I need to compress 100GB into a 7zip archive, and there is no currently-existing amount of CPU power that makes this a convenient task -- to say nothing of CPUs from 20 years ago.
I remember my Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS was somewhat of a nightmare on XP. The driver was buggy and I got frequent BSOD's, crackling audio and other weird behavior from it. I'm pretty sure the driver itself had a memory leak.
Really interesting video! Love seeing these retro builds and how they perform. Maybe even seeing interesting games I never heard before! 😆
Just as a point of curiosity - How did you run Half-Life 2 on this machine? Last I checked Steam no longer supports those older releases of Windows... So I'm curious how it got the game to run...

You should be able to run the speedrunning version of Half Life 2 which is available with both pre/post HDR builds.
These are generally the go-to's for running Half Life on XP era systems since Steam itself is such a mess to run.

I have two XP era PC's I picked up from customers over the past few months. One was used at the Princeton Theatre and has I think a single Xeon and a Quattro in it...dunno what I'm going to do with it. The other is just some generic Dell and I forget what's in it...maybe P5. Good to know there's still hardware out there I can use to make life a little easier with those things
