When I travelled to Tokyo in April, I always walk from Shinjuku station to the hotel on the street instead of the walking underground; otherwise, I got lost. I agree that travelers must have cash. I think it depends on how long are you going to stay, but I think you should bring more than $10,000.00 per day, and you should have more $1,000 yen as not every machine accept $2,000 or $5,000 yen. I also brought one to two bags for storing garbage during the day. It was very difficult to find a garbage bin while I was in Tokyo...
