    I'm glad I happened to see this. My vines produced in two spurts and the first dozen or so are dry and have been sitting in the house for a month. Meanwhile, vines produced another 20, and some are still green. Have not eaten one.

    My mom only fertilized it once and never again. She did watered a lot though, morning and evening. She has the larger variety so it should grow bigger than normal ones if you let it grow. The seeds are very soft when luffa is young. Try a smaller (younger) one next time. :) Luffa loves heat and water so you would probably need to water more.

    I absolutely loved watching her, she reminds me of my daughter- I do want to say, music is a bit much. But also- dont forget to de-seed (only to the part where she is wedging and cutting) and wash the plant lol. -Im sure mama wants those seeds to be able to plant again. Good video though

      The seeds are only viable if they are harvested *after* the fruit has out on the vine, as shown on this other video: th-cam.com/video/5mvNXlaK7s8/w-d-xo.html

    Loofah is a sponge when it gets old and dries out. We're still waiting for the largest one on the vine to dry! It seems like it would take quite some time to dry.

    What part of the luffa becomes the scrubber? I've had a foot-long plus scrubber given to us in the 1980s. It's nicely made, with cotton fabric sewn along the edges and cotton loop straps to help scrub your back. Some cross stitching across the luffa. This thing will never wear out and has been subjected to innumerable showers. Please do a video on indestructible scrubbers!

    • @charlene3523
      @charlene3523 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The inside or the meat of the luffa is the scrubber. After it has matured and dried out, it turns into a sponge.

    I prefer them waaaay youger/smaller than this. I like them before thet get seedy and gap in the middle, while the centers are still solid. Just like summer squash or zucchini, younger is better. You can also eat the blossoms, if you like that sort of thing.

      rzashida I make the skin into a pesto that is savory, tart, hot & a little sweet all at the same time, with very little oil (I like to use peanut oil for this) & the pesto also has some crisp roastes dry legumes, curry leaves, & seasme seeds ground in to add some protein to it The heat comes from fresh green chillies & dry whole red chilies.Every taste is controlled depending on the personal perference. My children love it as a sandwich spread. But it tastes delicious even with hustt piping hot plain rice with a teaspoon of clarified butter added for flavoring just as you would drizzle olive oil on your salad.

    Came across your channel while searching for a particular recipe. Now, I am hooked on your videos :)
    With all of the various types of produce grown, how large is the plot of land for your garden. Where does your mother, and or you, acquire your seeds? So many exotic fruits, vegetables. etc. Am so envious of your mother and you opportunity to grow so much.
    Shop frequently at the Vietnamese market in Austin TX and now after viewing your videos. am not so bewildered by the unusual fruits, vegetables in their produce section and eager to experiment. Thank you so much for your positive and informative channel. BTW, rinse the honey jar under some hot water and the lid will open easily....:)

    I was looking at your video again and was trying to figure out what variety your Mom grew? Seems if it's edible at that size, and the seeds are still white (immature), this is an Angled Luffa? We farm luffa cylindrica for sponges and they grow about 2ft max.

    • @wendiland
      @wendiland  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +PaulOrientedotcom I don't know the actual name of this variety, but skin has a smooth texture so it's not angled luffa. It does get pretty long and still edible. :) Hope you find the variety.

I noticed that they a have a peppery kind of smell. it reminds me of Nacho cheese. what I want to know is if you pick them small like the size of a cucumber can you eat them raw? like in a salad or with dip. I wonder if they could be dehydrated for chips.

      Vinod Bhatia I believe Loofah is native to Asia or Africa. Most gourds originate from Africa. Loofah is very popular in Vietnam, China, some of the southeastern Asia. The vegetable is already sweet, I prefer to keep the dish simple to let the loofah stand out.

      +Wendi Phan Yes Wendi. Luffa/loofah is a cucurbit and related to cucumbers. It's prepared with curry in India. The roast black seeds, young leaves, and flowers are also edible. Luffa seeds can be pressed to extract the oil. It's an interesting plant and studies continue to learn more about it.

    Hi there Wendi, amazing video. Thanks for sharing this knowledge! I can't wait for the next growing season! :D
    We will move to warm and sunny Greece soon from cold and cloudy Holland. Next spring I hope to create a nice shady outdoor living area using metal wire and wood. I have been looking at several different kinds of climbing annuals on the Plants For A Future (PFAF.org) website. On the PFAF page it says the Loofa will climb up to 15 meters tall (I believe thats 45 feet).
    Would you agree on that? I hope to build the trellis up from the ground and reaching about 4 meters high to the edge of the roof.
    Also, do you think it would create a nice thick shady area? I have sat underneath pumpkin shade before and it was amazing, they just don't grow that tall as far as I know.

    I'll give u one recipe first cut the loofah a little smaller than u did in this video
    heat the pan add the vegetable oil
    wait a few min for the oil to get hot meanwhile beat the garlic
    throw the garlic into the pan ,give it a stir add the egg (1 or 2 )
    stir well and let the egg cook
    add the loofah stir
    add salt sugar or soysauce or fish-sauce as you like actually u don't need sugar
