- Ryan Harb shares his experience creating the first Public University Permaculture Garden in the nation and explains how we can use permaculture to empower ourselves and make a difference in our community and the world.
Ryan Harb is a certified permaculture designer, community organizer and was the first person in the nation to receive a Master of Science degree in Green Building. In 2010, Harb created a job for himself as Sustainability Manager for UMass Amherst Dining Services. He then began developing one of the first university permaculture gardens
in the nation that supplies locally grown produce and hands-on
sustainability education to the campus and local community. Within 18 months, “The UMass Permaculture Initiative” went viral and was featured in over 100 media publications including the New York Times, Boston Globe, Huffington Post, and on MTV. The project has engaged over 3,500 volunteers and won 8 national awards. In 2012, Harb was invited to the White House to meet and speak alongside President Barack Obama. He was named a “White House Campus Champion of Change”, and UMass Permaculture was voted the top university program in the country that’s changing the world for the better.

Awesome! Next, you need to have a sustainable soil fertility system by wrapping your entire garden edge with a walk-in chicken moat! Chickens will help keep pests down, the moat/chicken run itself will be your “compost” bin. Plant differently season dropping fruits next to the moat so you never have to feed your chickens: eg mulberries, peaches, apricots

Make sure the ground and compost are wet before laying cardboards; plus keep the cardboard and mulch moist during soil preparation time.

Great talk. Would have to loved to hear whether he encountered any problems with pests while mulching and how he overcame that?
Encourage Natural "predators" to live and hunt in the landscape. Snakes, Foxes/Bobcats, Birds, etc.
to overcome problem with pests we have to rise the nutrition of plants and allow predator to take place in ecosystem,
Permaculture seems to have different interpretations depending on where it is applied. On a college campus, such as this, we are looking at getting soil samples, mowing the grass, digging the entire area, layering with amendments, sheet mulching, and this is as far as I could go, as I was exhausted already. Dry areas of the world are often the most remote, with sparse resources for water collection and water retention, not to mention mulches. But it can be done with swales and water collection techniques. What this video seems to present is simply planting a massive garden with plenty of volunteers. This expensive method cannot save the world from much, as it does not address so many challenges of poor areas, the ones most stricken with the depletion of the soil and collection of rain water when sheet mulching is not available for delivery. The application in this video is good for areas where resources and money are not an issue.

Mimicking nature would involve a greater emphasis on growing trees and aiming at self sustainable food forests, the way I see it. Great work though.

The climate does change different reasons or activities on our planet to interfering from the solar system. But the pollution, degraded soil, over use of different chemicals fertilizers, cities using concrete for everything to demanding they can divert rivers from their natural pathways. We have caused damage and need to change our habits. Instead of expensive green deals that fill government coffers all of us can change plant native trees and plants. Stop fertilizing our yards and parks plant plants , trees native bushes like blueberries or other plants. Many cities have heat island effect they need to stop , rethink the solution to more natural resources. A lot can be done permaculture is one of the best means to changing for the future
Just in case anyone is stopping by here wondering what permaculture is, it has nothing to do with putting cardboard down, or doing those three steps in the exact order he did them. If you want to start your own project, you may want to do more looking around on TH-cam than just this one video.
re: mimicking nature: Nature works through naturally balancing systems, with feedback loops that influence behavior. This is also how free markets work. It is NOT how governments work.
That's probably why the largest polluters in the world are organizations that have inefficiency and broken feedback loops built into them: governments. We as people and societies (which are different things than governments) are the ones responsible for managing resources. Please stop expecting others to handle the problem and think you're helping by "voting green." Take action in your own life, and influencing those around you to actually behave differently.

Wrong: governments are too useful -- to stop people from doing wrong -- to renounce on them.
The more I think about this video, the more I realize this is not really permaculture... this is just great gardening. Permaculture as I understand it involves the coordination of different technical areas pertinent to human life as to create systems that are whole and self-sustaining if possible.
No need to aerate teh soil at all. The animals in the soil do that. This way, you obtain even better performances. Not much but still.

Wow, worst TED talk I ever heard... Dude, you are actually talking about establishing a basic garden. Literally millions of people are doing this already. And by the way, not an inch of permaculture in this project!
