I first heard David Bowie's version and fell instantly in love because Bowie's voice is fantastic. So naturally I had to find the original. Usually whenever David did a cover version of someone's song, I prefer David's version...this song is an exception. The original is simply amazing...
True that David made things better. I think in this case, the raw material is already there. I just prefer the transition from intro to voice in Bowie's, I think that it sounds better but also, recording tech was better on Bowie's album and so drums sounded much better too. Great song, great version.
@@chrislj2005 if Bowie could hear you guys like his voice better than Scott Walker's, he would probably smite you :)) Bowie produced the documentary on Scott Walker called "30 Century Man"... he was a die-hard fan, like many other British bands (Radiohead, Pulp, etc). The first four tracks on this album, all Scott Walker compositions, are said to have started the new wave movement in Britain. And yes the original version is far far better than Bowie's. Both of them were amazing, groundbreaking voices and creators.
@@buddyvilla7393 I'm talking about Bowie's Berlin Trilogy. But because this was inspired by it, and shares the same aesthetics as those, its seems like it belong with them. Plus, The Idiot to me is also somewhat part of the "Bowie's Berlin Era"
i think it wasn't even in this 'reality' until like 5 yrs ago, from my perspective, yet now it's always been there, - a mandela effect? a good one, if so!~
That's false. The album Nite Flights (which includes this homonymous song) was recorded in February 1978 at Scorpio Sound in London. Scott brought David Bowie's 1977 album "Heroes" to the studio, where it was, according to engineer Steve Parker, used as "the reference album when we were making Nite Flights".
It does not predate Heroes but this song, which was inspired by Bowie, inspired Bowie to make African Night Flights from Lodger. Then Bowie covered it in the 90’s.
Well, either way there was a lot going on before this when the 1960's exploded in sound and vision. The Beatles influenced Syd Barrett and David Bowie was influenced by Syd Barrett. There was so much good stuff that it was hard to keep track. If you listen to Bowie's 1st album, which Syd said was a joke, then Space Odyssey, you can hear the drastic difference , Interstellar Overdrive & Major Tom, following the Apollo Missions that put Man on the moon. Also, at the same time, The Velvet Underground arrived on the scene as Andy Warhol funded them with Lou Reed, the Iggy Pop and the music world changed forever. I am thankful that I grew up in this EXPLOSION in music and I am still learning at 70 yrs. Music has kept me sane.
David had listened to Scott Walker early, so he had Brel's Port of Amsterdam and My Death in his set list,too...He was introduced to the Album Nite flights by Brian Eno....I hear some influence from the Electrician in Bowie's song Heat
Exactly & its not the opposite like I read in some comments Its DBowie who was influenced by Scott ... Eno & DB were obsessed by Nite flights listening it in loops durings Lodgers sessions Then DB years After said he did a Scott Walker s Album it was "outside" don t get me wrong I love Bowie He was a human Sampler or Synthetisizer what he took from others he would make sound his & marvelous ❤❤❤
yes! ironic, but this best track, soars waaay above all others, it'll fly free forever, it's still goin', it's already eternal -and-growin'-to-this-very-night~, across eternity, and all the way back to who knows when! 1977 and who knows how much farther back! i was 12 in '77, i was probly 50 before i even heard this track, yet it was an instant alltime favorite....remarkable, right?
when i heard bowie's cover, I remembered this song. living in nj back in that day so prob from nyc fm. even when bowie is doing a cover, its an awesome experience. This is one unbelievably good tune. thank you for posting. Are the other scott walker tunes like this or was it a one-off? just a great piece of music.
Who produced / mixed this album? The strings in it remind me of the Visconti remix of the Bowie Never Let Me Down album which was released in the last year or so
Okay.. Help? I grew up on Bowie ( My sister dated him, blah blah blaH ) He is a GOD!!!!and "NiteFlites" is one of my favorites.....So I was surprised to discover that Scott did it first .WOW!! Who is influencing who??? I read that" Bowie is known to take others Style and interpret his own flair". This is unreal???? ( I still love Bowie ,but need to dig deeper into the crates( smile)
i guarontee, that's the best bass track you wanna have, if you happen to be the lead singer, plus it just works, man! and that drum track, i guarantee, scott had to stop him and say, 'no, man, , just simple, easy rolls, man--let's-do-it-again, man!' dut-dut-dut-dut, bap-bap-bap-bap, *bing*!
Interesting that Bowie covered this given that the song is clearly and admittedly influenced by Bowie's then recent releases. It's a sort of give and return.
this song will be-my-love, forever! already i been ravin' about it for years, only found it a few years ago! this here , is the cleanest you tube upload! nice! ''...has-hit-the-bloodlite...~''
what a freaky creepy song, what is even going on here. I came here from the bowie cover where it fits in with the times and the kind of stuff he writes. Sounds like cocaine fueled paranoia nightmare on 60s international business travel

I heard Bowie's version too, and I thought he murdered it. Best thing he ever did was Laughing Gnome.
Listen to Fatima Mansions version.....they absolutely nailed this
This is the best album from the Berlin Trilogy
Brilliant. 😉
What are the names or titles of the other two albums from the Berlin Trilogy??????? I’m assuming No Tegrets but I’m not certain.
Sorry No Regrets

that drumset's gettin' 'broke in' pretty heavily in this track... i wonder if that thing [STILL YET] exists today... haha
Being that I seriously love David's voice of course I like his version but the original is just as amazing....David did this song justice.
Yes this Walker Brothers song predates Heroes.

Hi there. You might like to give Scott's solo album Climate of Hunter a listen. It sounds kind of similar, to my ears at least.
Should have let Scott write the whole album.
I am awesome!!!
First Bowie was influenced by Scot Walker then the unimaginable happens..Scot Walker was influenced by Bowie.
So very interesting that cross pollination of talent...now there are differences in their voices...slightly. Scott is so much softer...

David Bowie's crazy half brother Terry Burns killed himself at the train station at the end of my road when I was 5. Interesting facts...

No comparison. Scott Walker's version beats Bowie's hands down!

Bowie's cover adds urgency, angst and texture. Comparatively, this is laid back, casually intoned, and thin
