    Thanks for the video . Vince! Excellent advice! I've built plastic kits for more than 40 years, and there is a process that you have to modify , depending on the subject matter. You have outlined it perfectly. The research of the assembly process is key, as the instructions will more often than not, complicate the finishing, having you do something out of logical sequence, adding time and aggravation. Beginners tend to fall into this trap. The sprue goo is another great way to shave off a bit of time that would otherwise be spent on repeated puttying and sanding, often losing details in the process.
    Great advice, even for veterans. Wicked job by the way....! Thanks again!

    A bunch of questions on this amazing build.
    1. Do you remix your colours every time again? Here it might be easy but lets say you work with large OSL or special mixed colours.
    2. Did you shade the gold trim?
    3. How did you motivate yourself to work on this guy over several weeks? Did you do small projects in between and had like one day a week dedicated for this one? Or just as you felt like?
    4. For the oil wash on TMM, did you gloss varnish before to make the wash run easier into the cracks?
    It looks stunning, well done.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. Generally yes, but I am also working with a wet palette, so it's often not necessary.
      2. Yep, and highlight.
      3. Nope, just this the whole time, all the way through, I am generally pretty tenacious and these kind of projects play to my favorite things to hobby.
      4. Nope, the metal paints are so smooth, you don't generally need to worry about it.

    Gonna watch this cause I'm interested in your workflow, but I have more of a chaotic approach personally and doubt I'll better myself in that regard.
    My Imperial Fist character that I'm finally almost finished, but not, cause I just added new steps:
    - I'm going to buy this ultramarine guy cause it's a limited mini.
    After he arrived
    - I could paint this guy as my first imperial fist, since I saw that on Hobbycheating
    in the middle of it:
    - Huh, those Ammo Mig oilbrushers look like an interesting choice to test oil pants without going all in
    then a week later
    -Huh, I could use this to learn my first chapter symbol freehand
    and then I saw a staircase base on Instagram and decided to order everything to make one, which is where I'm at right now

    I think it might have something to do with the fact I started with air fix and the like from a pretty young age, well before my teens which is when I got into games workshop, but the bigger and more complex the kit the happier I am.
    I've always been able to work out my subassemblies and building as I go.

    Great video! An illustration of your entire process is very helpful in showing a structured way of tackling the model.
    One thing I would say for some of the painting section is that the footage is so sped up that it loses a lot of it's usefulness since you can't see exactly what you're doing. In fact it was so fast I almost got a little motion sick. I understand you can't show everything, but maybe show part of it at normal speed and speed up the rest or cut where necessary.
    Just thought I'd share my experience with the video and I hope it helps.

    I have noticed that especially on robotic models with lots of flat panels lighting based differences in contrast seems to be less considered than on organic sculptures. All panels seem to have the same "color" independent of their angle to the light source. Is that observation correct or am I blind ?

    • @VinceVenturella

      So there is still voumetric highlighting here, it's just somewhat muted because it's black, but the up facing surfaces have more grey, the lower areas have more black, it's just a little subtle, but I am absolutely still doing some panel modulation.
      Its generally more pronounced on other colors, here is a good video on panel modulation - th-cam.com/video/2tmujLvovEo/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Vince! Love the intro - keep the inspiration going! ;)
    During research, I would almost expect us to talk about history and background and deciding the kind of setting you want the figure in (to tune your plan for the base and the lighting), as well as the pose and the story you want to tell. Although, since I've never even imagined tackling such a biggie, I have to ask: are they posable? Could you make him lean forward or have arms positioned differently if you so wanted?
    Well, just a thought, and thanks for your help on this! Some day, I will dare think of these big guys... Some day! :-)
    EDIT: So was this an about 200 hour project, give or take? (I assume I should plan for more for my first ever big project. Right?)

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, all told, it was probably 130-150 hours of painting, then research, planing, and assembly for the rest. And yes, you are absolutely correct, there is so much more you can go into research and it's a good thing to set the environment and the theme in that way. :)

    Could you please talk a bit about varnishing through an airbrush? I had a few disasters with rattle can varnishes, but I also read how the varnish destroys your airbrush if it dries up inside. I dont want to mess up my H&S Evolution! Do you use a cheap airbrush pistol just for varnishing?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I use a workhorse airbrush for it, but it's absolutely able to be cleaned. I use a little isopropyl alcohol then just water to flush it out, no issue. Basically, always use a little thinner with it, just like any paint. Then just a good cleaning like in my previous video (link below) and you are fine - th-cam.com/video/yEIJs1c4bsQ/w-d-xo.html

    When you say that you frequently varnish the mini; do you mean you just spray that mix you described through your airbrush? Or do you brush it on by hand? Dip the whole piece? I never varnish anything unless I want glassy sheen to it, so I'm not used to the thought of varnishing metal.

    • @VinceVenturella

      I'm so sorry to keep bothering you with questions. It's just that I've finally acquired some of the oil paints you've listed in your oil wash video along with everything you recommended for applying the technique. It's been over a week since I've applied an oil wash to some minis I'm painting and when I handle them I get some oil staining on my fingers. Is this something that I caused through improper technique? Or do I need to just wait until I varnish the metals at the end of my project?
      Something else that concerned me was that I don't know how to dispose of the mineral spirits that I used for the oil paints. Is there a proper way to go about it? For that matter, is it even safe to dump acrylic paint water down your sink?
