It's funny because the lore is never explained in game, but there's a whole-ass novel that does. And they never marketed it or mentioned it. Balan isn't actually supposed to be the bad guy in the game, and every enemy is supposed to mean something, but it's never explained and is really lame for that reason.
The period of time from the launch of the demo to this game's release has been like watching a car crash in slow motion and seeing the look of terror in the driver's eyes
A more accurate version is that its 2 cars crashing into eachother in slow motion, one Driver is the playerbase and the other is the devs knowing fully well they are going to be the sole reason Square never picks up another platformer.

I had never heard of Balan Wonderworld until I saw it at GameStop maybe three days ago. The character on the box looks like some kind of Knights into Dreams fan OC from Tumblr.
I mean the game is bad but huge part of the reason why it even got attention in the first place was due to Balan's character design, I think it's dishonnest to say it's comparable to tumblr OCs.
Gameplay aside, the story probably would've _made_ this game, if they didn't opt instead to stuff all that extra lore into a novel they released alongside the game...

My understanding of this game's design philosophy is that Yuji Naka wanted to make a game so mechanically simple while throwing in a whole bunch of power-ups for the illusion of depth, not realizing that the power ups are limited by default because of the limited controls. The result is... whatever the hell this is.

I saw this game and was excited about it, but once you start playing it gets really boring and it is hard to figured out the story
A crying shame because it has the skeleton of a decent game, but it's missing the meat. This game is the remains of a delicious dinner sitting on a nice plate. You really wanted to enjoy the dinner and you looked forward to it but when you got to sit down at the table, only the scraps were left
It didn't sit right with me and even I was disappointed
Balan Wonderland is the result of Mario Odessy, The Zelda CDI games and A hat in time puking into one bucket then that bucket being set into a garbage can then it being stuck in a dumpster fire

My understanding of this game's design philosophy is that Yuji Naka wanted to make a game so mechanically simple while throwing in a whole bunch of power-ups for the illusion of depth, not realizing that the power ups are limited by default because of the limited controls.
The result is... whatever the hell this is.

Meanwhile, the followups Sonic Colors and Generations were decent... and then Sonic team shat the bed again with Lost World.
The editor must've done a really good job because whichever sound Charlie thought was loud i thought was normal at best.

He worked on Sonic 06 before he left so let that sink in and you might get why this game is so bad.

Yuji Naka also did Shadow the hedgehog as well.
