I learned to plant potatoes from my grandmother who was taught by her Scots-Irish grandfather, whose family left Ireland in the wake of the potato famine (which killed over a million people). Potatoes became a food staple for Ireland’s poor tenant farmers because you could get high yields out of a small area. So you could feed your family healthily out of a small plot. Unfortunately, people came to rely on potatoes so much it was completely devastating when the blight hit in the 1840s and the majority of the population was left with no food. Ireland’s population before the famine was 5 million. After, it was approximately 3. Approximately 1 million people left the country to escape the devastation and seek opportunities abroad. Consequently, there are more people of Irish descent outside of Ireland than actually live in the country today. One of those immigrant families was the Kennedys, who of course produced a President of the United States. So the simple potato had a tremendous impact on history.

I've grown the purple majesty potatoes, they're SO fun to cook up & eat. The color stays when cooked so it's a fun treat to eat purple potatoes. I didn't make a potato salad with them, but that would be fun. They have good flavor & even mashed up with butter take on a lighter purple color. I think you'll enjoy them & so will your kiddos ( it'llbe interestingto see what Aaron thinks, please record a video of his reaction 😄).

Either way, I grew them for the color and they were super tasty roasted along with asparagus (all cut into 1 inch pieces- even the asparagus). Really nice bite sized pieces seasoned with garlic. They were sooo pretty and tasty along with our home raised steak from our Brangus type cattle. I look forward to seeing you make some purple mashed potatoes! As a kid growing up on a mixed farm, we hand planted 20 acres of potatoes.
Rows were marked out by a horse drawn sled. We walked along and cut and dropped sets . They were planted about 1 foot apart using a toe to keep any stragglers in the row. The sets were planted raw and we never tried to plant eyes up. The planted rows were hilled up with a hiller and we walked away. Potatoes had no problem growing.

When you hit the city drain cover, it reminded me about how we help to protect any in ground lines electric/water/sewer in France. The lines are usually laid a meter (3ft) or more under ground, and then covered with soil, leaving 1/3 (1ft) open where we lay a long strip of red mesh over the buried lines, then cover the red mesh up to ground level. This way, when digging, you would hit the red mesh first indicting you to stop digging. I'm not sure if that is a practice here in the states, maybe might help you guys with any new lines being laid.

There suppose to put caution tape a few inches above the pipe and a piece of tracer wire. But alot of times one or both of these get skipped usually the tape and they just have a tracer wire, which isn't great as it just tells you the general area it runs, it could be a 1ft to the left of the mark or 1ft to the right. Then the depth can be anybody's guess really certain things are supposed to be a certain depths but.... that subject to the contractor doing it. Especially when it comes to cable lines I've seen anywhere from 18in to just 2-4in below the surface

When planting potatoes in your own garden, one should always use "certified seed". Not only does it protect your own potatoe crop but it protects large farmers around you from disease that might be in potatoes. You should always know where you get your potatoes from that you are using for sets.

Oh multicolour potato salad is THE BEST! We have a local farmer nearby who focuses on growing pink flesh, purple flesh and orange flesh new potatoes. I add german fingerlings to her mix and boil them whole (to maintain colour) then halve them once they cool. It's a jewel-toned show-stopper at dinner parties. I dress it with olive oil, mustard, parsley, dill and lemon with just a touch of yogurt - so it doesn't obscure the colours. So pretty, try it!!

Good Morning, I don't think you need to keep that box cleared of mulch, just find a nice rock that is not too heavy or a small statue to place on the top as a marker. It will add interest to the area and let you know right where the box is in case someone needs access. What about using a ground cover, like lamium, for the rest of the space?

A great variety of potatoes! I agree with you about the purple potatoes- you won’t want to boil them with any other potatoes because they turn everything purple. They are great as chips/crisps though.
Watching you prepare the potatoes for planting reminded me of the movie The Martian 🤣. It also reminded me of a long time ago when I had some potatoes I thought were spoiled, threw them in my mulch pile and they grew new plants!

I don't normally comment, but I had to share what a small world we live in. I started watching this channel while working from home. Now it is my daily ritual to drink coffee and spend my morning with Laura and the family. I have been eyeing the drill and auger for a bit. I decided to go all in and buy the combo pack with your link. I was SHOCKED to find out I was supporting a small family owned business in the town my family and I grew up in. How funny that watching someone from across the country makes me support a local business. It turns out it really is a small world!

It is uplifting to know some of these challenges, like a box where you don't want it, but can't move it, or some plants just don't make it, despite your doing all you could/doing things well. Makes me feel better about the random things that challenge us in our landscapes and efforts. THANK YOU for this, always learn something here.

I am new to you channel. I saw your last vid about Lilac and didn't realise that they were a shrub as when we moved in there was a 6ft garden fence blocking the view behind it. I thought it was a tree, with several mini branches coming from the roots. It is as tall as our dying conifer tree (Ivy plus neighbours cutting it down over our fence). I am not good with height measurements but it is as high as the 2nd storey/ 1st floor ceiling. It is in bloom rn and i love seeing this. With have a passion fruit running up in front of the fence and another pink bloom is our bleeding hearts growing slightly under our dwarf red acer tree, alongside some blue bells.
I am learning about no dig atm and encouraging my hubby to be a bit more organic with the lawn. We both seem to have taken to our roles organically in terms of who looks after what. It is the first house that i haave lived in and we have renovated it head to toe.
With regard to the garden, hubby cares for the lawn, hedges, watering and helps with digging our doggy clay soil (although not so much now, with the soil improvement techniques and no dig).
I research plants, fruits and veggies, prepare our own potting soil and plant seedlings. I made a google spreadsheet this year to be super organised and to help me out next year. It's a UK garden/back yard so its wet clay and not massive compared to the US about 70ft from the house.
I learnt from your channel that some of our bushes are called Euonymus! So thank you again!
Renovating our garden has been fun but hard work. That weird fence in front of the conifer and Lilac was actually full of garden waste and motorbike parts 6ft high! We ordered a skip but it was that old we found a mummified rat! We called him Roger so not to scare the kid and made a grave for him next to the dog bones we also found....
We de-Ivyed the conifer tree but we had to cut down some other dead trees back there. We now have a play house and mini shed chest for garden stuff and the BBQ storage area. We cut out a hole in the fence like a doorway to access the back area. The lilac is now fenced off too for wildlife as we have finches living in there.
The lilac is on the back right and the dying conifer is on the left. In front of the conifer on the other side of the fence we have planted a pear tree and a cherry tree. The pear tree was finally fruiting last year, but then the new renting neighours decided to cut down their conifer tree, with nesting birds into our garden, along with their elderberry tree, which we were allowed to harvest the over hang to make jelly. This was last year in May on my birthday, whilst we were having a BBQ, with my dad on a support network day out. I cried.
Anyway, this year we managed to rescue the pear tree. I am not sure how many conference pears it can support. I did prune it in winter and this week cut off some ill looking post flower buds. There are still about 20 potential pears to form. Should i keep an eye on them or cut more off? I don't wish to over stress the trees. The cherry tree isn't coming back this year i don't think but i think i found a self seeded cherry tree, which i potted up last year as it was a competition between the birds and us picking the cherry's the year before! lol
Our wild birds have also graced us with some bramble. There is a massive wild blackberry/bramble bush near us. We also bought a raspberry cutting on sale last autumn that is budding. Going to up pot these soon as we have limited space.
Forget crazy cat lady, i'm the crazy plant lady come summer! lol I have learnt about cover crops, succession planting, mulching, how to build a tiered wormery, composting and interplanting to prevent bugs.
I have learnt that everything does not succeed but i love experimenting! Regrowing leeks. I also found a sprouting potato peel in the composter. I thought the white bit was the root but it was the plant as it resurfaced. Even after uprighting it and separating the peel, i still managed to get 1lb of potatoes from a single peel sprout. Potatoes grown at home taste totally different from the shop ones!! We bought first earlies - Orla. Using the Tony method from Simplify Gardening. Got some great plants showing. We put 14 in a large 3ft/1mtr wide terracotta pot. 7/7 on each level. Have no idea how we are going to harvest them all but last year, i just put my hands in the same container to pick them out.

When I was growing up, my Dad and I grew 2/3 acre of potatoes, 1 acre of sweet corn, and 1/2 acre of everything else. Mom would buy a 50lb. bag of potatoes from the store and cut them up like you did. We took them from her and planted them, we did not leave them over night. I don't know if that is the right way but we always had a huge crop at the end of summer. I was one of 5 kids so we ate a lot of potatoes. We also grew 2 beef cows, 6-8 pigs, 24 roosters, and a few turkeys each year for meat. We had a few dozen egg layers as well. We were pretty self sufficient back then.

Great video, super informative! A tip I have for picking blackberries is to wait until the berry is dull instead of shiny, that really makes a big difference in the sweetness. I’m actually pulling my blackberry vines out because they’re so aggressive, I’m thinking of moving them to another part of our property but haven’t decided yet. I prefer raspberries 😊

I grew up on a farm and have planted and dug a lot of potatoes in my life, not so much lately, but on the farm. I have always been a little OCD and my grandmother used to tell me as we walked the rows planting by hand that I planted the straightest rows of taters she had ever seen, lol. Now, I plant them in grow bags which makes digging obsolete. Anyway, yes, red la soda and red norland are related. Red la soda (both actually) is an excellent new potato. Dig them smaller even than the seed potatoes you bought. Wash it and boil them, then eat with butter and hot sauce (my current favorite is cholula). Of course, new potatoes are also good boiled and served with butter and mint, too. Yummy! As for blackberries, I have tons of Himalayan blackberries I could send you and I can guarantee you they wouldn't have died, lol. They're tasty but the worst invasive plant I have ever seen, far worse than kudzu.

      @Gigi-fv9ky 2 ปีที่แล้ว

P.s. if you have potatoes stored that are sending up shoots, you could have used them for planting. Probably would have saved you a lot of money. At least where I live now, seed potatoes are crazy expensive. You can even plant organic potatoes from the grocery store although I would let them chit for a few days if I was going to plant in rows.
