Thanks for this comment Forzia. I have recently made another video about the cost of living as prices have risen drastically:th-cam.com/video/hQa5Bbn9XGc/w-d-xo.html
It's actually so expensive that it is almost half the price of where I live ;-) For any Americans/Europeans those costs are dead cheap. I you have a business on Internet this is the place to be, cheap taxes and cheap cost of living. Talking about the taxes, 15% is unheard of in Europe. In Belgium where I live it's more like 50% and the cost of living is double... making a 4x advantage on the ratio earnings/cost of living...
Yes, Europe is more for certain things. I’d argue the food cost is less though as the fresh produce is way better in Europe. It’s extremely expensive here for locals though. I really don’t know how many people survive.
Hi Lucy. Thank you for your content. We are a young South African family living in Cyprus but looking to visit Mauritius soon and perhaps relocate. Appreciate your time!!
Thanks for your video on the cost of living in Mauritius. Unfortunately cost of living is skyrocketing around the world with the cost of energy rising. I can imagine how life can get even difficult for Mauritians on low to medium salary since lot's of products are imported. The costs of living in Australia is also rising as inflation biting us hard. The cost of Petrol is around $2.20 - $2.40 and Diesel $2.25 - $2.50 Litre and at some point there were talk of running out of electricity in the Eastern part of Australia. But I’m getting confused and a bit anxious too. :( Is it just me or the cost of living seems to be far higher than the average salary - based on your numbers? How much would you say a family of four would need to live on? Please could you give me your thoughts on the bare minimum and also an average? I would really appreciate it.
Hi there. Perhaps confusing, but I gave the Rs21000 salary (average for locals) just to put into perspective how expensive it is here for a Mauritian earning that amount. Of course many people earn more. Some earn millions. It all depends on your job (like everywhere in the world). Based on all those prices, to live comfortably, for a family, you need about Rs150-180k per month. Everyone has different living standards though...
@@LucyLeheilleix Thanks Lucy! So with the 15 % income tax applied this would mean 175.000-210.000 Rupees per month which suggest salaries around 80-110.000 Rupees for each parent. @@TheZotyesz Possibly you'd need to contact the potential employers via email and ask up front (if the salary isn't advertised). More than that, I don't know as I don't work in that field.
This vid was made 3 years ago i guess....add at least 20% to these costs (in Rupees). If you can live on foreign cash you do better because of the Rupee devaluation.... With a thousand Euro a month you are on the poor side....
After totaling all expense how do Mauritians afford living on an average of 21000 rupees? Thanks for taking the trouble to do a breakdown on cost. Would help to know total average monthly cost for a family of 3 for example.
They only can manage it by living with the whole family under one roof, and I mean the WHOLE family. Quite usual here. Lots of Mauritians have own property, even very often small and not really comfortable. You hardly will see young people here living on their own. So the family is pooling their income. And not to forget that they cook completely different. Btw. I personally don't know many Mauritians with an income of 21.000 Rs. So, especially now lots of families are struggling.
@@dagmarlong8754 Hi, what do you think a family of 4 need to earn to live comfortably in Mauritius if they are not paying for a mortgage that is, so they own the house?
It's not balance in the cost of living and salaries not to mention some of things you presented are the same like in Ireland where I live......in my opinion you can't just go there and live peaceful, you need a business to keep up with the expenses.....the video it's very helpful... thanks !
Hi John. A scooter would be ok, but just watch out for crazy drivers and the rain. Beef is easier to get. Lamb would be something I would buy at a butcher.
Hi Jay. Most expats are French or South African. We know a few British expats, as well as Australian and American. English is spoken and is the official language, but French is by far the most utilized language. Lastly, yes you can buy property if it is PDS, IRS or RES. Check out edb.org for more info. Happy Christmas!
Hi there. Covid has deeply affected many businesses and households. We've seen many people leave the island. Current restrictions require mask wearing in public places, social distancing and vaccinations are mandatory. I'm hoping for change in 2022. Have a Happy New Year.
These figures don't make a lot of sense based on the average salary. Unless the average salary earners live in tents, with no tv, phone or transport. Really good video though.
Hello, great video and thanks for posting. It appears Port Louis is the cheapest place to live. What is the general "vibe" of the city? Is it safe? Relatively quiet at night when you're trying to sleep? (I'm older & tend to go to bed early). Is it relatively clean? For all questions I don't mean perfect, just decent. Thanks again.
I think Port Louis is probably fine to live (particularly if you work there too as traffic is a huge problem). It is safe and relatively clean too. Personally, as we're on an island, I prefer to live near the beach. Thanks very much Charles for the comment.
Clothes are cheaper elsewhere for sure. Only problem is, with covid, we've been stuck here unable to move :) Anyway, at least beaches are opening up again next week! Thanks so much for watching.
Are places for everyday living easily accessible by bus or by foot? If I wanted to rent a car for a day to explore and do an excursion, what is the average daily car rental price?
I would highly recommend renting a car if you want to get the most out of your trip here. Do check out car rentals at the airport (such as Hertz, thrifty and Avis. All are available online for prices. Otherwise cabs are an easy option too. It all depends where you are staying. Good luck Charmaine.
Thanks for the suggestion. I actually chose not to put an overall sum at the end as everyone has different lifestyles and budgets. Some earn less than Rs21k, others more than Rs250K per month. Some live in a place with rent of Rs15k and others spend Rs130k on rent. All depends. Thanks for watching.
@@LucyLeheilleix I am currently watching the one of videos. I am hoping to see one where you show the different style of accommodations with prices. I am most interested in mid-tier and higher level accommodations near beaches
Thanks for watching Andrew. I'm not an estate agent, but you can certainly check out L'expressproperty.mu to find lots of accommodation types and areas that might be of interest to you. Where are you currently living?
Hi Petar! Rs15000 is what we paid when we moved here and seems to be a common rate on the forums. I guess it also depends on the car. This was for a small Nissan. I hope that helps?
@@LucyLeheilleix thank you so much.I remember when i rented for week on my vacation, and it was around 150$,also small car.I guess I should look better deals next time:),thank you so much!
Usually it's Rs1000 per day for a small car (1000 - 1300 cc), which makes you Rs30K for a month. But since you are renting for a whole month, they'll rent it with a reduction for say Rs20K (or 15K in case of Lucy) ... Instead of going through a big agency (Hertz, ABC, etc), find the best deal on Facebook!

@@TheZotyesz which field do you work in? That salary is highly possible for some families.
@@LucyLeheilleix hi Lucy, sorry I was on holiday and decided not to touch my gadgets. :) So, yes, I’m working in Data Science (Data Analytics Consultant) and my wife is a Lease Administrator at the moment. Why I’m asking these questions is because I couldn’t find jobs with indicated salary (even the range) so it’s very difficult to have an idea. I would appreciate if you could help with this.
Thanks a lot
Zoltan
@@TheZotyesz Possibly you'd need to contact the potential employers via email and ask up front (if the salary isn't advertised). More than that, I don't know as I don't work in that field.
Awesome stuff
This vid was made 3 years ago i guess....add at least 20% to these costs (in Rupees). If you can live on foreign cash you do better because of the Rupee devaluation....
With a thousand Euro a month you are on the poor side....
Check my TH-cam page as I made a newer version this year 😉
great content thumbs up
Great Video many thanks
Thanks for watching Mark.
Well done video.
Thanks very much
Very helpful info - what about liquor prices? 🍾🍷🍸🍹🍺🥃 I have a bad habit...
Alcohol is very expensive 🫣
@@LucyLeheilleix I thought we bought at the wrong places. SuperU, Winners, etc are not cheap at all. Thought the locals had a secret
After totaling all expense how do Mauritians afford living on an average of 21000 rupees?
Thanks for taking the trouble to do a breakdown on cost. Would help to know total average monthly cost for a family of 3 for example.
Many people are struggling as the rupee has weakened and expenses (imported goods) have dramatically increased.
It's not balance in the cost of living and salaries not to mention some of things you presented are the same like in Ireland where I live......in my opinion you can't just go there and live peaceful, you need a business to keep up with the expenses.....the video it's very helpful... thanks !
Thanks very much for watching Nick.
Exactly.
Dreaming, Nick? It's absurd to compare Ireland with Mauritius! Wait till reality punches you on the nose!
Would a scooter be a viable option for transportation? Is beef and lamb widely available in the supermarket?
Hi John. A scooter would be ok, but just watch out for crazy drivers and the rain. Beef is easier to get. Lamb would be something I would buy at a butcher.
I wish to travel to Mauritius 🇲🇺
The prices were better than in America. The average income was much lower. Too much lower for it to work for most people.
Couldn't buy you a coffee.. link is broken. Great content btw.
Thanks Eddy! Will try and fix that link :)
www.buymeacoffee.com/home Not sure if this one works? Anyway, thanks for watching.
Cheaper than Kenya by a long shot. I’m considering visiting.
What’s the expat crowd demographic?
Is English widely spoken?
Can foreigners buy homes?
Hi Jay. Most expats are French or South African. We know a few British expats, as well as Australian and American.
English is spoken and is the official language, but French is by far the most utilized language.
Lastly, yes you can buy property if it is PDS, IRS or RES. Check out edb.org for more info.
Happy Christmas!
How did Covid affect living in Mauritius in the past two years? What are the current restrictions?
Hi there. Covid has deeply affected many businesses and households. We've seen many people leave the island. Current restrictions require mask wearing in public places, social distancing and vaccinations are mandatory. I'm hoping for change in 2022. Have a Happy New Year.
Ale vaccinations mandatory for adults only? How does it looks for kids ?
Sorry, the average basic salary of nearly 6o percent of the working population is 9ooo rps only ,not even to be feed daily
Thanks for the info. The weakening Rupee and pandemic are certainly taking their toll on the island too. Not easy for many people.
These figures don't make a lot of sense based on the average salary. Unless the average salary earners live in tents, with no tv, phone or transport. Really good video though.
If you earn minimum wage, life is very very tough. Thanks for watching.
Well Elaborated..
Thanks 🙏
Based on your queries.
Msuritius is not for you try quenca Ecuador.
Good one thanks
Thanks so much!
Very educative
Thanks. A hard one to create as everyone has different salaries, lifestyles and living expenses!
For the clothing I person buy my clothes in other countries because it is cheaper like in London
A practical suggestion, please try to summarize the overall expenses it helps a great deal. Else it leaves me scattered all over.
@@LucyLeheilleix USA
Except of the rent it's not so very different from my hometown in Germany.
Thanks Jutta. That’s very interesting to know.
Thank you!Just one question, where did you find 300$ rent a car for one month?Usually is much more expensive
