We have a large flock of blue jays around us that we have fed for years. They seem to recognize my husband who is the bringer of the food! He was working in the garden the other day and not paying attention to them. He started hearing this loud thumping from the gutter of our porch. There were two blue jays "plucking" the mesh gutter cover which caused the loud noise. Both were bent forward and staring at him while thunking the gutter to get his attention. Those two would not be ignored! He had to stop and feed them! It left us in amazement.

Sometimes one of the Bluejays that visits my feeder, mimics the sound of a red tail hawk that drives off other birds just because I think they want the feeder to themselves. I started to call it hawk due to its hawk call before it comes. I have a family of them living in a patch of woods near my house. Thanks for the videos, I find them educational and know I know how to tell them apart.

Okay, I live in an area with a lot of mature trees around my yard. In the mulch beds around the back yard I have planted smallish trees that have grown a lot over the past two years. Lots of birds live in the yards and wooded area around mine, but not so much in my yard because I’m pretty active in the yard gardening, watering, picking up. When I come out to the deck in the morning to put out peanuts or tree nuts for the squirrels, I hear the blue jays calling to alert each other that the goodies are coming. But they are camera-shy! They hide in the foliage of my trees, dash out to grab a nut, and then go back into the foliage. They don’t linger enough for me to get a good fix on what they look like! I do think I have three or four blue jay visitors.

A flock of 3 stays year 'round and those on Spring or Fall migration make my feeding grounds a way-point. They're tolerated by the regulars but are easily spooked by any movement I make as I watch from the front window. There's a 6" x 6" wooden platform on the railing, just outside the front door. The regulars prefer coming to it for p-nuts. I love the way they cock their heads and bounce along the wrought iron railing to fill up! But...the squirrels are also on watch and I have to send them scurrying back to the ground or tree.

Several Northern flickers visit my peanut feeder, but I can't tell them apart. They had babies in my dead pear tree, and when the babies fledged, they had their full adult plumage. I could only tell they were babies by the innocent look in their eyes. But I can tell a baby call from an adult call. It really is exciting and fun when I know one of the babies is visiting.

It started with one visiting me in the garage and then it sat with my partner on his steering wheel for about an hour or so. We took it as a blessing and so we feed them daily. We have dogs though so they fly in, get their peanuts, and go. When I'm out walking, they call out and perhaps I'm imagining, but I feel that they are signaling that they are coming or thanking us for the food. As long as this family is here, I wish to be a good steward for them so any suggestions to enrich the relationship would be much appreciated.

The videography here is beautiful beyond words-I am stunned every single time I see a Blue Jay, and to see all these unique individuals here side by side is honestly breathtaking. My partner and I only recently started getting seriously into birding and she has been getting many new species around our house in the suburbs-the most of exciting of which are these guys, who started coming around when she started putting out whole peanuts! We are convinced that they look out for us coming outside in the morning and let each other know that food is coming, and it is amazing to see them coordinate their efforts to get the peanuts!

Great video, this was super helpful! I try to employ similar methods to differentiate my own daily group of 8-10 Blue Jays whom I feed every day. For the last month or so, however, about half of them are molting, and have lost all of the feathers on their heads! It's so funny, they look like little blue buzzards LOL! I also have a large daily group of Cardinals, who I'm also trying to identify individually (harder to identify than Jays, but possible). My daily group of Red Bellied Woodpeckers had a bunch of babies this season, but I can't tell yet if they're male or female, as their heads are still solid grey, and they haven't turned red (male) or half-red (female) for me to distinguish their gender yet. Awesome video, Lesley, thanks for sharing!

So wonderful to read that! I'm glad. I can definitely see how it would be extra challenging right now to tell the difference between your molting jays. Haha! I can do it with mine but it requires more scrutiny. That is wonderful about the red-bellies having such a good year. Pretty soon those head will turn and you will know who is who :)

What beautiful footage. This was a really well-put together video. It's informative but more so, the way you presented that info. I'm a visual learner so comparison footage and pictures really helped make your words clear. Before I watched this, I wasn't entirely sure where to spot the differences and they generally all looked the same to me, even though I knew there were differences present. But now, I know where to look and I can definitely see the difference in your Jays. Thanks so much for this video

I really enjoyed your video. Thank you so much for taking the time to make it. Excellent job!
I have an ordinary backyard in a subdivision in Oklahoma City. But, I have a pond, and I have dedicated my backyard to whatever wildlife wants to come. I don't mow, or put out herbicide, or insecticide.
My pond draws birds for a drink and a bath frequently. Also, this time of year, toads come to reproduce. Some animals come and eat the fish.
My pond draws a large variety of perching birds, plus great blue herons, a red-tailed hawk, a great egret, possums, toads, mallards, tree squirrels, etc.
This morning, I am watching Blue Jays gathering twigs to make a nest. It is May 25th.
Several years ago I planted milkweed for monarch butterflies. It is all in bloom now. It spreads further in my yard every year. Monarch butterflies will be coming to lay eggs soon. 😊
