My girlfriend loves Brockhampton, Rex, Gus, and many other artists you've covered. So hopefully this will convert her update: the girl I dated at the time was never converted to death grips, although this wasn't the reason for our relationship's end, it was certainly a factor.
@kdkfh oh yeah I'm a huge fan of BH as well, I put her onto them in fact. I was just giving some examples of artists alfo covered that are very unlike dg.
Alfo Media and also wrong, sadly. they most likely used some very cool plugins for adobe after effects over footage of live actors (including the director himself, sean) to create the video: trapcode form and trapcode sound keys. the app this person is probably referring to (glitche) is MUCH more limited (i own the app) and would not be able to create the effect in that way.
I actually really like "Hot Head". The song is genius because it's totally nonsensical at first but then becomes this awesome and totally chill reggae song. You have to sit through the "Bla bla bla bla, Oh no" chops to get to the good part. That's exactly what the album "Bottomless Pit" is all about. It's like a pile of garbage that has gems in it. That's the best way to describe it, really.
Thats how i used to feel, but youd be suprised how many people like death grips. Or at least people who know them as a meme, but you can teach them, that its actualy good, with enough time
It took me forever to like them so whenever I show someone a song and they hate it I practically have to force them to try 3 songs and read lyrics. Everyone said Money Store was the most accessible. But I thought they were shit when I heard that album. No Love and Guillotine were the songs that made me say "wait this is actually pretty good". And then I went back and loved Money Store.
Death Grips mashups on TH-cam are a good way to introduce new listeners too. A lot of time pop songs give a context to his flow and make his lyrics clearer. It just goes to show that Death Grips fans don't take themselves to seriously.
For real though, good video, Death Grips is one of the most refreshing groups I’ve ever listened to and I’m so hyped about the new album. Also the fact that they just know everyone in the music industry is fucking hilarious

This not just with deathgrips. This is with any band that puts emotion into their music. Death grips is like a horror movie of music.
If you're more for a more pop-centric experience but with a similar level of experimentation, I recommend SOPHIE. Her music is more pop/avant-garde, but her songs Not Okay, Whole New World/Pretend World, Ponyboy, Faceshopping or L.O.V.E. are more on the more Industrial/death grips-y side.
"One of my favourite groups in all of music is admittedly difficult to talk about with the average person." This is my problem with everything I listen to.
Same. I listen to a lot of experimental music. Plenty of techno, ambient (the countless subgenres within those) etc. Ambient is this great ocean of tranquility revealed by sunlight, but not piercing the lovely and terrifying darkness further down (dark ambient that is)
I've been a fan of death grips for around 5-6 years now, I've only met one other person who's not family who listens to them. Death Grips is definitely one of my favorite artists as of now in my life. I love sharing music with people and opening their minds to stuff they've never experienced. Fantastic video.

Hey, the "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" thing is actually from Bob Dylan! As a huge fan of Dylan, its on his Album "Blonde on Blonde". Fun to tell people that you like both Bob Dylan, and Death Grips!
I remember when my friends introduced me to Death Grips. It kinda was a joke among my friend group because of how unconventional their music is, and they expected me to dislike it, but now it is one of the groups I listen to most, and after a few years I probably listen to it most of that friend group
This was a really incredible intro to Death Grips. I have to say though, I find the More Than The Fairy video the most unsettling. Something about Ride's low growl, Les' frantic bass riffing, and the flashing banana on a cord all combine to make the perfect fever dream. I'm definitely subbing. Glad I stumbled across this.
I accidentally discovered them and HOLY SHIT , I am glad I did . I generally listen to death metal and other sub genres , occasionally I’ll delve into extreme metal . This group is exceptional. The music just makes sense , if that makes sense ? Lol . I have no words just admiration for what they do
You know, I think it’s interesting: Most folks I’ve met who come to Death Grips from a hip-hop background find them overwhelming or maybe a bit too intense at first, before eventually coming around. On the other hand, noise/experimental, metal, and punk folks I know have seemed pretty open to them at first. They might sound FANTASTIC, but not necessarily shocking or particularly intense, at least from what I’ve encountered, to those audiences.
yeeboii I think the way they’ve merged hip hop and noise/industrial and metal and all of that was definitely new ground, but I also don’t think it’s on some new frontier of abrasiveness or intensity (except in hip hop). It’s just really damn good at being what it is.
I became a fan pretty much on the spot at a death grips concert. My friends were into them and I had heard a few songs and thought they were a bit too much so just never got into it. Well I got a bit of fomo and had money left over so I went and saw them with my friends anyway. I was blown away. I have been to over 100 concerts with mostly rock and metal artists at that point and I had never seen anything like death grips. I've never seen an audience go so fucking hard. It was amazing. Amazing energy. A dude broke his arm in the moshpit even. Theyre giving slayer concerts a run for their money. And the audience was so diverse tastewise. Metalheads, punkrockers, hip hop dudes, hipster kids, you name it. After that I was hooked and could not stop listening. Everyone should give death grips an honest try.
Damn. 'Guillotine' was my introduction to Death Grips. Since then i can feel myself falling into some kind of feverish trance when i listen to them too closely. I love Death Grips.
"i am proud to announce my vocals landed on the new death grips album ! i adore death grips and i am thrilled to be their "found object" ! i have been lucky enough to hang and exchange music loves w/ them and witness them grow !! epic : onwards !!" this is a quote from her Facebook page. it's not exactly sure how she contributed to the album, but a lot of people (myself included) think she did some production too
It’s weird how much your impression can change. The first time I heard them I thought it was just a bunch of white noise and screaming, but after a few listens to their albums I started ”understanding” it. It actually started sounding like a good song with great melodies, amazing drums, catchy verses and hooks and an overall hype and intense sound.
I started listening to Death Grips maybe two or three weeks ago but it feels as though it's been years. They immediately became a part of my daily routine. The gym, walking to or from work, waking up in the morning, getting out of the shower. I've seen a comment on here that says "I do not remember life before Death Grips."
Everything about your channel is perfect!! Your music taste is so similar to what I'm listening to at the moment and just feeds me information in a way that only makes me admire the artist more!. I love music so much and your channel puts into words what I wanna tell people about bands/artists and the industry. Thanks again. Also my Fav death grips song is hot head and bubbles burried in this jungle : )
I just found this channel through this video because I'm interested in Death Grips although I didn't really like the 2 or 3 songs I heard (just found it weird). Then I checked out the rest of your content: I also love BROCKHAMPTON, Sing Street, Columbus, Frank Ocean, Remo Drive, Maggie Rogers, Clairo and Kanye West. So yeah, I'm trusting you on this one. And if your taste really is like mine, I bet there's going to be a Carly Rae Jepsen or Childish Gambino video soon.
lmao who said I was going to force myself to like them? I’m just gonna try out an album and see how I feel about it, instead of judging a band for like, 3 random songs.
I am so torn because I recently discovered "I've seen fottage" and I can't stop listening to it. It's such a badass song, I love the lyrics and the feeling they convey and the badass e-guitar or whatever creates that drive throughout the song. I've listened to their other songs multiple times now but I just can't make it work for me. It's not that I dislike the mostly chaotic tracks but there is just this drive missing that "I've seenfottage" gives me. I dunno if this makes any sense tho...
Yeah, you like hooks and steady beats. There's nothing at all wrong with that, Nirvana are an excellent band and a lot of their melodies are pop. Nobody has to like death grips and liking death grips doesn't mean you like music more than someone who doesn't. If you like angry music that is smart and also catchy maybe try the clash.
@@nikfs5620 no worries. Hope you like them. Their last album is trash and there aren't any hip hop elements like in death grips but they are clever, catchy and moderately angry. If you want some catchier hip hop stuff that is still angry you could try clipping or run the jewels (who you probably already know). Good luck finding music you like bud.
I've been listening to Death Grips for years, I still loved this video even if I expected you to break out in laughter at anytime. *I will be sure to send this to friends to explain Death Grips, you did it perfectly.*
I absolutely love death grips. The screaming deep dark lyrics, the raw, visceral and addicting back round beats blew my mind when I heard the money store. Thank you for covering them you've got a new sub
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Death Grips. The music is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the lyrics will go over a typical listeners head. There’s also MC Rides’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realise that they’re not just angery- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Death Grips truly ARE idiots.
Ultra Nyan hahaha your comment sounds funny to start but I definitely agree with you, people already don't pay attention to lyrics and meaning but alot of death grips songs are deep and need certain amount of life experience to understand where he's emotion is coming from
Ok it's these kind of things that irritate me. 'You must be smart.' You don't have to be smart, you have to have your own opinion. I hate death grips because to me it isn't music, that doesn't mean I have a lower IQ than you.
The I've Seen Footage music video is one of my all time favorites. It's so simple, but so clever and maximalist, which is one of my favorite things about DG. They just pack every frame/moment in their art with anything other than silence. Death Grips is loud and constant and as someone who has a brain that just doesn't stop, it's fucking perfect!
Thanks mate! This is a great summary of a band. I'm not sure if I'm going to listen a lot, but this gave me an idea and your explanation seems really fair and well balanced! Cheers!
I love most of DG’s discography and totally appreciate the love you’re giving them. I think you can dig deeper in this intro to the band in my personal opinion, too. Obviously it’s not for everyone, but I think there’s more to be said about each member and the genre as a whole. A deeper dive into the lyrics and mixing too, I think could show more people of their artistry- in a way that I think would be more effective than naming 5ish aesthetic choices in their music videos, but it’s just an opinion!
I needed this. People have asked me about death grips and Anthony Fantano and random people have referenced death grips and I couldn’t understand them. I only saw 2 videos so far so I was trying to find like a video explaining them to me.
Fun fact, in the video for "You might think he loves you for your money" (the one where he is making crazed facial expressions and crying) MC Ride is on a heavy dose of psilocybin mushrooms.
First heard about Death Grips in college. Was a fan of Antoine Fantoine. Hadn't seen his old Death Grips reviews and he posts a video on Bottomless Pit. Gives it a 9/10. I saw it was experimental hip hop, and I'd been listening to MF Doom, MC Paul Barman, Kendrick, Open Mike, Danny Brown... quite a bit of lyrical hip hop. I'd been an 80's punk/thrash/shoegaze fan in high school, so I thought I understood abrasive music. Listened to Bottomless Pit the first time... *WHAT THE F$CK IS THIS* . I think on my first listen I could only even begin grasping 'Eh'. Everything else was un-listenable. I've gotten more into them now, but even on what in retrospect is their most 'pop-y' album, Death Grips is like a brick wall.
Bruh that clip of MC Ride throwing a drum to a Mac at the exact moment of the silent break in No Love only to go back to the song with even more raw passion got me hyped the fuck up, amazing timing
you might think we love you for your money but i know what we love you for it's your excellent taste in music and underrated channel
Deathgrips is neither rare or underrated. Everybody on the internet listen to them and think they are edgy or special.
Zz Or hey fun fact i said his channel was underrated, not dg.
eeehhhh
Zz Or DG is rare and underrated. Barely anyone on the internet listen to them and have no idea how they sound. (Like you you don't listen to dg)

this is a quote from her Facebook page. it's not exactly sure how she contributed to the album, but a lot of people (myself included) think she did some production too
Bjork sent them samples, asking them if they wanted to use them, and they made an entire album out of them
They sampled Lionsong before that song was out, or likely even finished.
ALFO IS ONLINE
One of the best Death Grips videos I've ever seen man great job
It’s weird how much your impression can change. The first time I heard them I thought it was just a bunch of white noise and screaming, but after a few listens to their albums I started ”understanding” it. It actually started sounding like a good song with great melodies, amazing drums, catchy verses and hooks and an overall hype and intense sound.
Knowing that MC Ride is in my area gave me many sleepless nights
5:00 OH NO I LEFT MY PHONE AT ARBY’S DAMN IT
"Death Grips was a huge inspiration for his last album Black Star" so that explains it
I started listening to Death Grips maybe two or three weeks ago but it feels as though it's been years.
Also my Fav death grips song is hot head and bubbles burried in this jungle : )
thank you sm!
And if your taste really is like mine, I bet there's going to be a Carly Rae Jepsen or Childish Gambino video soon.

lukke Don't force yourself to like something.
lmao who said I was going to force myself to like them? I’m just gonna try out an album and see how I feel about it, instead of judging a band for like, 3 random songs.
I was hoping you'd mention the mashup culture. People tend to mix DG with synthwave and other stuff and the outcome is almost always majestic.
There’s this the smiths and DG mashup and it’s fucking great
For a music writer, you should know classics like bob dylan..the leopard skin pill box hat quote is his originally.
Every video you put out makes me wonder more and more if we are the same person
luckily there is one thing that will always divide us: only one of us is made out of avocados
I'm digging the Melted pic, my favorite album from Ty
Ty guy? Pretty cool
@@michaelhall5429 thanks will definitely check out the clash :)
On GP is probably one of their more rock songs
Love this band. MC Ride is a tragic heart with a beautiful soul.
I've been listening to Death Grips for years, I still loved this video even if I expected you to break out in laughter at anytime.
*I will be sure to send this to friends to explain Death Grips, you did it perfectly.*
Yeah I’m already a huge fan Death Grips but I’m here cause I love your content
I absolutely love death grips. The screaming deep dark lyrics, the raw, visceral and addicting back round beats blew my mind when I heard the money store. Thank you for covering them you've got a new sub
It’s kinda hard/enjoy Death Grips’ harsh style but if you were to enjoy it, you get straight up addicted to there music
1 year later and this video has aged pretty well. just wanted to say thanks for making this video and to continue making video essays.
Ultra Nyan hahaha your comment sounds funny to start but I definitely agree with you, people already don't pay attention to lyrics and meaning but alot of death grips songs are deep and need certain amount of life experience to understand where he's emotion is coming from
Metalhiram its a meme
Luis Rdz your life is a meme dawg get at me wazzup
Luis Rdz your life is a meme dawg get at me wazzup
Ok it's these kind of things that irritate me. 'You must be smart.' You don't have to be smart, you have to have your own opinion. I hate death grips because to me it isn't music, that doesn't mean I have a lower IQ than you.
The crowd going wild when Ride destroyed that iMac is the funniest thing I've seen today.
Death grips is the dark souls of music
these guys are great to listen to when I'm doing cardio
Damn, the fever being claimed at the beginning there really spoilt the flow of that intro. Also, massively blue balled all us DG fans lmao
Thank. You.
I don't know you, but I like your profile pic.
wozing repping Milo:)
Ahhh you like milo? He's cool
milo so underrated bro
Kero Kero Bonito covering I've Seen Footage led me to binge all of Death Grips' songs and that led me to this video which is pretty awesome.
same!
HELL YEAH LOVE ME SOME DG
*I loved Death Grips with the 'leeside halloween skate video'.... perfect in ever way*
first Death Grips experience EXMILITARY
DG played a dorm room my freshman year of college. Needless to say it was my favorite concert experience ever absolute chaos
Hot Head is actually one of my favourite lol it gets so good
same
got my one of my friends into death grips, i can understand why you made this, it feels great to get people involved and passionate about things
I STAY NOIDED
Thanks mate! This is a great summary of a band. I'm not sure if I'm going to listen a lot, but this gave me an idea and your explanation seems really fair and well balanced! Cheers!
Giving bad people good ideas
Fell in love with them the first time I listened to them and I'm still in love. Immense appreciation towards their art.
As soon as you said 'hard to listen to' I knew you were gonna bring up 'Hot Head'
It's just too much.
Huge fan though. Of you and them.
Kane Southard hot head is one of my favorite songs
I love it because it's just pure energy
I love most of DG’s discography and totally appreciate the love you’re giving them. I think you can dig deeper in this intro to the band in my personal opinion, too. Obviously it’s not for everyone, but I think there’s more to be said about each member and the genre as a whole. A deeper dive into the lyrics and mixing too, I think could show more people of their artistry- in a way that I think would be more effective than naming 5ish aesthetic choices in their music videos, but it’s just an opinion!
Ahhhh omg, I had the pleasure to see death grips live in august, one of the weirdest but best concerts ever, great vid btw ❤
I needed this. People have asked me about death grips and Anthony Fantano and random people have referenced death grips and I couldn’t understand them. I only saw 2 videos so far so I was trying to find like a video explaining them to me.
Imagine a Beyonce and Death Grips collab.
Fun fact, in the video for "You might think he loves you for your money" (the one where he is making crazed facial expressions and crying) MC Ride is on a heavy dose of psilocybin mushrooms.
My gf introduced me to this and Im so confused
This video made Death Grips my favorite artist, I saw this in around May and looked them up and fell in love
Derek Troxel haha that's a great reaction, bottomless pits actual song is so badass that's like a actual thrash of this generation 👌
Bruh that clip of MC Ride throwing a drum to a Mac at the exact moment of the silent break in No Love only to go back to the song with even more raw passion got me hyped the fuck up, amazing timing
When I first heard about death grips I honestly thought they were a heavy metal band
Crouching tiger hidden gabber is on of the most entrancing, fucking revelatory 22 minutes of bliss ever recorded.
