This has become one of my favorite hobbies as well. Only, most reactions miss so many crucial parts to this song. This guy does a great job listening and understanding what he's hearing. It's refreshing!
The first time I ever heard this song was live. They did it as the finale their set, and as everyone around me was giving a standing ovation, I sat in awe, unable to move, tears rolling down my face. In the years since, it is rare that I don't cry from the beauty, the pain, the longing to worship...to be loved. We certainly are privileged to be able to see and hear such beauty.
I once had front row and center seats to a Punch Brothers show. For the encore, they performed Familiarity unplugged. It was stunningly surreal. There's no way anyone in the back of the theater could hear them the way we did. Still get chills thinking about it. I highly recommend checking out anything and everything Chris Thile and the rest of the Punch Brothers have ever done independently. They're all highly talented musicians.
They did that at the concert I went to also, and I was sitting near the back.😅 Thankfully I have been kind to my ears over the decades and could hear what the folks sitting next to us were complaining they couldn't hear. It was quiet, but it was still a precious experience. Next time I see them, I'll be sure to get tickets early enough to sit close.
This has been my favorite band for nearly 15 years and it makes me unvelievably happy to see people get introduced to their genius. They combination of their passion, creativity, technical skill, and love for music moves me like few other artists can. I hope you will dig more into the Punch Brothers/Chris Thile catalog (on or off channel). And that they change your life like they have changed mine. I've see Chris Thile over 40 times in various groups and/or solo over the last 15 years and there is just nothing like it. I love listening to their recorded music, but the live experience is beyond spiritual for me. A Chris Thile performance is the closest thing to church/a worship service in my life. Final note: Jacob Collier has said that Chris Thile may be the greatest musician alive and I 100% agree.
Excellent song. Great reaction! You respected the eclectic uniqueness of one of the most talented groups that's ever existed. It's refreshing seeing someone really hear the many nuances of this masterpiece.
In 67 years I have never heard a better mandolin player. Absolutely the GOAT. besides that his writing, composing and arrangements are some of the best I’ve heard. His understanding of music theory and what make a melody a melody is off the charts. Possibly the best all around musician alive today.
One of the absolute best collection of musicians ever put together. Keep going down the rabbit hole with them, and I'll keep watching. We've all been blessed with greatness by Punch Brothers
A friend of mine bought me a ticket to see Punch Brothers here in Australia about 8 years ago. I'm a muso and really fussy about what I like. Seriously, half way through the first song my jaw hit the ground...and stayed there. This is the first time I've heard familiarity live, wow that was moving. Thank you brother.
Of all the things I was not expecting you to react to, it was the punch brothers (but I'm so happy that you did)! There's so many weird and wonderful songs from this band. Check out Chris' solo stuff as well. Loved this reaction. It was great to see the bits that hit me hit you too :)
The musicality 😳 🤯!!! Progressive Bluegrass! Rhythmic dotted eights? The lyrics are a perfect dance of realizing that connection can be generated through electronics but we all need that human touch, a coming together for a deeper connection. 🥺 The line "Pretend you love it because you love them" makes my heart happy and sad at the same time. The "We've come together" harmonies were very Beach Boys like. The 6 minor down to the 5 in the really progressive breakdown changes the feel altogether for me. This song has many things that defy music theory and yet it "comes together" perfectly. If I'm hearing right on the defying music theory part. The fade out with the stem they were playing with...is that what I heard? From that point to the end was so intimate. The people in the front row were hanging on the edge of their seats. This was absolutely beautiful!!! Cinematic!!! The shower! 🤣🤣🤣
I sub to you channel precisely because of the humility and gratitude you show to the music you listen to. Your heartfelt appreciation of this song will be shared by countless other, I am sure! I felt like I was accidentally listening to a very private prayer, and I was filled with awe, right through that glorious final resolve. Thank you, Charlie. Much love from the US.
I am so happy you got to experience this masterpiece...I could see it in your eyes when it all clicked in. I try to share this band with as many people as possible because I think everyone needs to hear it. I got to see them in Asheville NC a couple years ago in a relatively small venue and they did familiarity around one microphone. If you get the chance don't pass it up.
Saw them in concert last night, and this song was the encore. Absolutely stunning. All of them are amazing musicians (Brittany Haas is now on violin with them). I've seen Chris Thile live many times in his various projects, and the guy is an absolute phenomenon. I think my favorite was a show at SF Jazz, where he played a whole solo show that alternated between bluegrass and Bach. I had a front-row seat. He goes somewhere else when he plays, and it's incredible to watch.
Yes, gratitude to be alive at this time of musical renaissance. Every night I prepare for sleep with Jacob, Chris, Jacob/Chris, Sara Bareilles, and last night added Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek Mahogany Session to the list. I drift off with a smile on my face, a crystal clear mind, and my cheeks damp with tears of wonder. You get it, I know. Thanks
The level of musicianship, artistry, artistic integrity, an beauty is almost too much to bear. I fear this kind of video/music will not garner the metrics to warrant other videos but I appreciate how much you appreciated it. I would encourage you to check out some of their other works. Chris started with a a group called Nickel Creek and their work is *amazing* with fantastic instrumentals, great new grass/pop number of tremendous beauty, wit, and explorations in harmony. Chris also worked with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and other heavy hitters in the classical scene with their "Goat Rodeo Sessions" which while perhaps not as musically accessible as other works are great. Chris is one of those unique talents that as a musician make me want to put down my instrument in despair yet inspires me to pick it up and try and be the best version of myself as an artist.
I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but there’s a 2 part video of Chris playing a medley with Bryan Sutton, who was the go to Nashville session guitarist at the time. It’s absolutely insane playing by both of them.
@@TheCharlieSmithChannel I was the one to originally request this song. The guy who sent you the funds commented on my original comment. On that thread, I told you that you may feel compelled to reimburse him once you heard the song. Just busting balls - I appreciate the reaction.
Punch Brothers are the equivalent of Tiger Woods in his prime. The best to ever do it. Who can go from Debussy or Bach to Tony Rice to a completely electronic instrumental by Radiohead played only with a classic bluegrass setup like these guys? NOBODY.
Great video! Im a long time Punch Brothers fan. If you want to hear something newer by them and as unexpectedly outrageous as this song (though in a whole different way), check out their song "Angel of Doubt". Im pretty sure that song has some moments up its sleeve that will surprise you alot!
Punch Brothers and some Nickle Creek music is so progressive. I imagine this is what Yes or King Crimson would have sounded like if they played bluegrass instruments. Check out Movement and Location by Punch Brothers or Green and Grey by Nickle Creek.
So, this record and the one before it were Chris Thile gets really into Radiohead and the Punch Brothers were one of the few bands around that actually had the technical training and background to do it. That’s sort of what is going on with this.
One of my hobbies is watching musicians react to this song for the first time.
Never disappoints
This has become one of my favorite hobbies as well. Only, most reactions miss so many crucial parts to this song. This guy does a great job listening and understanding what he's hearing. It's refreshing!
The most beautiful song of all time. I’ll never not tear up listening to it. Chris is one of the most talented musicians on the planet.
This is absolutely one of the greatest pieces of the 21st century

I've known Chris since he was 7 playing at the campgrounds at bluegrass festivals he was talented even then.
And I just saw him play with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra for the second time, it was incredible.

Omg. Go see Chris perform his new piece ‘Attention’ for mandolin and orchestra. Absolutely unreal. Some snippets of it are on TH-cam!
That look on your face after the video when "my oh my" starts playing...

I love you Cyd. What an amazing comment
@@TheCharlieSmithChannel I love you, Charlie...and I love the way music moves you.
I don't think there was a stem. I believe that was all played live.

Musicians unafraid of beauty...
I took my time, but subscribed at last. I realised you are one of the fearless.
I appreciate you. Thanks for coming on board 😁
You might becoming ready for the Goat Rodeo Sessions. Chris and Yo Yo Ma and a couple of other average musical prodigies … just saying.
Both Goat Rodeo Sessions are fabulous. What talent and joy.
Yes, gratitude to be alive at this time of musical renaissance. I've seen this band live twice. They are awesome.
Another song of theirs I really enjoy is "Movement and Location".
It brings contentment and joy and melancholy all at once. It does make you're glad to be alive.
I haven't been able to witness Punch Brothers live yet, but I've seen Chris and Nickel Creek twice. Absolutely brilliant musician.
my absolute favourite band x
Go see them live if you get a chance. World class and well worth it. Quite enjoyable between songs too.
I'll sub for the water bottle dump at the end that's dedication
Amen brother ... yeah, I saw them for the first time a few weeks ago in California. Completely blew me away. Spot on, 100% agree with you.
Saw them perform at Appalachian State University in Boone NC. Blew my mind!
Gratitude - beautiful word to capture the feels from listening to these aliens.
Gospel for musicians
Yay! Thanks for doing this Charlie!

Chris Thile inspired me to buy a mandolin, and then throw it in the trash.

Great reaction!!
Dude that was awesome! This one and Who’s Feeling Young Now are both incredible tracks from this album. It’s been years since I heard this, thank you!
I told you, you may want to reimburse the monetary gains. One of the most underrated bands of our time.
I may want to what?

Want to hear a reaction for “This is the Song” (GoodLuck). Love the radio station concert version. Cheers.
Seconded!
You think familiarity was epic? Check out the blind leaving the blind from their first album.
Punch Brothers are the equivalent of Tiger Woods in his prime. The best to ever do it. Who can go from Debussy or Bach to Tony Rice to a completely electronic instrumental by Radiohead played only with a classic bluegrass setup like these guys? NOBODY.
Randomly found this video, I watch alot of your drum corp reactions, it would be kinda cool to see if a drum corp could pull this song off

For a fairly recent Chris Thile song, I would highly recommend Goddamned Saint by Nickel Creek. I wasn't raised with religion and it still moved me.

I hear some Pink Floyd influence, especially toward the end. ProgGrass.

Kindly request you to check out one of the South African gospel artists Dr TUMI - OVERFLOW 🙏
