    • @genghisdon1
      @genghisdon1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It isn't too much of the clip, but early on, on criticizing Bernie, she says he didn't cater to identity politics enough, specifically blacks & women, although identity politics includes all sorts of other groups, some of which she cannot want to court (such as Islamists, white supremacists, etc).
      I'm saying she is WRONG on that specific bit...DEAD WRONG. People that are into identity politics are to be shunned or scorned, not courted or cow towed to. One is always better off without them.
      So: brilliant, yes, but made a (major) mistake here

      @Blue Butterfly Then why should I believe you? Klein's analysis predicted what's happening right now. No isn't enough.

    • @dahliafully
      @dahliafully 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Blue Butterfly So what makes a theory real?
      Theory is what scholars come up with. And they do it through research and connecting facts which she did. She's not like the opinion bombers who construct their "theories" in political p.r. rooms for powerful "think tanks" with agendas to further militarize and empower giant, private interests.

    • @adamgoulder8019
      @adamgoulder8019 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Blue Butterfly a real struggle we have with Brexit and those who promote and support it is that they base all their arguments based on belief. They fail on every occasion to present either evidence for their 'opinions' and to point to a fundamental plan of what they would do and what policy they would implement or remove to make the country better than being in the EU.
      You say her evidence and conclusions are not real. You have to provide evidence to support that opinion otherwise you cannot expect anyone to understand why you say that. To say she is disturbed is again, an opinion, provide the evidence. What has she said that is disturbed?
      Good on you for reading the book though, I'd be delighted to hear which parts of it you believe are false and reading your evidence to disprove the evidence and conclusions she has made in her book.

She's pro-war, pro-international trade deals that sellout americans, pro fracking, pro saudi arabia (one of the most sexist places on the planet). She'd be a great republican, but makes a horrible democrat. That's not to include that she was openly against gay marriage for her entire political career, she's the "superpredator lady" (she and Bill, who was also as strong as trump on illegal immigration, put more black people behind bars than anyone ever has). She is awful. And that doesn't even include the whole email server scandal, which IS a big deal, nor her looting Haiti, one of the poorest countries on earth. What good things did she do in her decades of "public service" (when she somehow acquired hundreds of millions of dollars and raised billions from corporate donors)?

    Naomi Klein (and I think she would not like this comment - sorry) is a massive intellect. As a Anarchist I actually hate idol worship, assigning a movement to one person, but she is truly a stellar thinker. I was for Bernie then voted Stein and I see Bernie folks getting little angry here but listen again: Klein was an early and ardent supporter of Sanders and really her criticism is that he is not left enough if you listen to her description of Corbyn and the French candidate Melenchon. I guarantee you Naomi Klein is not saying Clinton was a better candidate (sorry Hilbots) she knows Clinton was not and assumes it goes without saying. She is just talking about what a Corbyn like candidate needs to do to win in the US going forward.

    About climate change: From the Introduction to Worldwatch Report, Livestock and Climate Change:
    "Whenever the causes of climate change are discussed, fossil fuels top the list. Oil, natural gas, and especially coal are indeed major sources of human-caused emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHGs). But we believe that the life cycle and supply chain of domesticated animals raised for food have been vastly underestimated as a source of GHGs, and in fact account for at least half of all human-caused GHGs. If this argument is right, it implies that replacing livestock products with better alternatives would be the best strategy for reversing climate change. In fact, this approach would have far more rapid effects on GHG emissions and their atmospheric concentrations-and thus on the rate the climate is warming-than actions to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy.
    Livestock are already well-known to contribute to GHG emissions. Livestock’s Long Shadow, the widely-cited 2006 report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), estimates that 7,516 million metric tons per year of CO2 equivalents (CO2e), or 18 percent of annual worldwide GHG emissions, are attributable to cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, camels, horses, pigs, and poultry. That amount would easily qualify livestock for a hard look indeed in the search for ways to address climate change. But our analysis shows that livestock and their byproducts actually account for at least 32,564 million tons of CO2e per year, or 51 percent of annual worldwide GHG emissions."
    That's right--animal agriculture is the cause of more than half of all greenhouse gases. If Naomi Klein is not vegan, it's time she went vegan, for the sake of the environment, as well as justice for animals, along with everyone else who is concerned about climate change.

    We do have to get out of the debate of what happened in the primary, BUT... it's impossible to move forward until Hillary supporters acknowledge what happened. We can't build a future when a chunk of the population refuses to learn from history.

    • @jorgecolombo8370
      @jorgecolombo8370 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      exactly. If a person is not honest, that she did something bad to Sanders voters, she can't be trusted. But it is actually even worse, because Sanders himself, also Nina Turner and now Klein also deny, that something bad happened. That is the recipe for failure and next time they will be betrayed again. They mislead their followers in the next trap by the Clinton people.
      You can't work together, if one side is abusive, at least not in a good relationship.

    I respect Naomi but her assessment of Bernie not winning has to be criticised. Hilary was an "establishment" candidate propped up by the conservative aspect of the DNC and her campaign focusing on identity was frankly never going to win over voters who weren't university educated (aka the majority of people). Leaving those issues aside Hilary is probably the most toxic candidate that could have been chosen because of her neoliberal economic policies and war-mongering foreign policy positions. It doesn't take a genius to see how useless that kind of candidate is for people who want a real alternative.

      @bonniel4325 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the problem with you precious liberals. The republicans had the ABSOLUTELY most toxic candidate ever to run for office. But their objective was to WIN the election, no matter what. We democrats did not make that our objective. We always get caught up deluding ourselves, splitting hairs in our idealism. Bernie was the better candidate, but did he really have to self-identify as a socialist? He had the millennial vote, but even millennials have been indoctrinated by their republican parents that socialism is a bad word. Bernie could have won, had he left out the word socialism. Granted Clinton is not Bernie, but ANYTHING would have been better than this toxic sh*tbag we have now. With all her political warts, Hillary would have gotten us single payer health insurance, and we would not have that facist Gorsuch on the Supreme Court, had we just gotten our act together. Hillary and Bernie should have run together, with Bernie as VP. That's how Clinton and Gore won, and how Obama and Biden won.

    • @LiberaLib
      @LiberaLib 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hillary was very clear that single payer was never going to happen. Her policies would have looked a lot like trump's, but she would have been more articulate in expressing them. and when these policies failed, progressives would have been blamed for the failure. I for one continue to be relieved she lost. The democrats are dead to me.

    One quick fact - Diabetes has been the cause of more amputations than all the wars combined - in the UK - they have 20 amputations done every day - due to complications from diabetes. In the US
    Amputations: In 2010, about 73,000 non-traumatic lower-limb amputations were performed in adults aged 20 years or older with diagnosed diabetes.
    About 60% of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations among people aged 20 years or older occur in people with diagnosed diabetes.
    If you don't address the root cause of Diabetes - the UK and the US's healthcare systems will go bankrupt. No matter what system you have - it will not be able to manage the increase in disease... and if you decrease diabetes - and heart disease etc... then you will decrease the burden on the healthcare system. So any plan needs to include disease prevention and education on the root cause of disease.
    And this challenge is there for the US, UK and Australia where obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease are on the rise. We need to change our lifestyles and the government need to spend money on education

  • @romlyn99
    @romlyn99 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    To Naomi Klein - You have a talent to tell the subtle truth with brilliant clarity.
    One thing that nobody talks about health care is the root cause of disease - Obama care is not health care - it is an insurance management system to manage how insurance companies can charge people for access to healthcare... You are correct that single payer is probably the only solution to that problem... how to get the profit motive out of the health care system.
    But it doesn't address the root cause of disease. What are the biggest costs where diseases are concerned?
    Cancer, Heart disease and Diabetes - the costs for disease concerning percentages of each disease over time has only increased over time... meaning that more people are getting cancer, heart disease and diabetes... and if we want to fix the healthcare system - we need to reduce costs - and we can only do this if we move from a disease treatment system - which treats the disease - and move to a disease prevention system...
    And this means we need education of doctors and education of humans - the people going to doctors.
    And what kind of education is required? The root cause of disease and how we can prevent disease by changing what we eat and how we live.
    And this needs to be the focus of all healthcare systems throughout the world. And the biggest healthcare system we can implement locally are community gardens - combined with health care education...
    But I do love everything else you said

  • @jaykay415
    @jaykay415 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hm. I quite disagree with Naomi's comments about race. Latino and black Americans are often LESS progressive than others on the left. (Latinos can be very pro-business, as sort of anti-regulation small business owners; and blacks can be very anti-choice and anti-gay rights, due to the influence of the church.) Also, I think Bernie really did connect with the progressives of minority races. To me, the problem was the following three things:
    • The mainstream media was completely ignoring him in the earlier stages, so many less-tied-in voters were not yet aware of him, or felt that he was such a fringe candidate that it wasn't worth paying much attention to him. As we know, they all reported delegate totals which included the super-delegates, making it seem that Clinton's lead was insurmountable;
    • The large block of earlier primaries was in the south, where all races, overall, tend to be more conservative, and so might dismiss Bernie's campaign, as well as possibly dismiss a non-Christian;
    • And, blacks, especially in the south, were very loyal to the Clinton's. Remember, Bill put a lot of black people in very important, top positions. He was called "the first black president." Latinos, too, have been quite loyal to the Clinton's, as they usually have strong support from the unions.

    I read her book "this changes everything" one of the best books I read this year.
    However I heard here 2 details, which I do not like.
    1) "Sanders did not get enough colored voters and old women to vote for him" That is a bad narrative. I do not like that tone from Sanders, Klein and Turner, that they deny the cheating by Clinton people on Sanders people, which happened in many states plus the super delegates and the unfair media coverage - and they not even do anything significant about it. Next time it will happen again and someone, who cheated me and does not ask for forgiveness and is not honest about it - is not trustworthy.
    2) Is the same. I think, she is trying to be diplomatic, but this is the bad kind of diplomacy. I am talking about the 1.5 °C goal. We are already close to that. We will inevitably reach it. It is not helpful to say, if we do some half-baked solution, that would help or we still could do it. No, this is not helpful. You need to be honest. Enough with this diplomacy to appease some elitist schmocks. Usually she is better than this.

    Yes, I like a lot of the Bernie rhetoric, but I feel that it is just that. We have seen too many politicians who are herders, like Barack Obama, like Bill Clinton, who talk the talk but do not walk the walk. Would Sanders be another one of these if he had become POTUS? One can only speculate, but I am very wary of his authenticity as a true Progressive. How can he really expect to effect change from within the Democratic Party, a party that he himself admits is completely off course? Not only does Sanders caucus with the Democrats, they have created this special "Outreach" chair for him (I'm hearing "herder"). And after decrying Hilary Clinton for the duration of his campaign, he then turned around and told everyone to support and vote for her. Huh? Did he really object to her policies and track record or not? Why is he pushing the Democratic Party unity when he is a registered Independent? Why is he pushing the Democratic Party when they so completely, thoroughly, and totally abused him? Why did he not run on the Independent ticket, as Lieberman did, and won? Or, why did he not take Jill Stein up on her offer and run on the Green ticket... and win. No, he CHOSE to be the designated loser. Was this a ploy to gain sympathy, and thus support, for him so that he could more effectively be a herder? To me, Sanders being in the Democratic Party and going around talking about reforming the Democratic Party is like someone being in the Mafia, holding an upper echelon position in the Mafia, and going around talking about destroying and reforming the Mafia. Does this make any kind of real sense? If we have learned nothing else, we now know that the Democratic Party is a wholly owned and NeoLiberal entity that has been bought by Right-wing fanatic, fundamentalist, corporate money and is totally beholden to the back channel government of the Deep State and the Military-Industrial-Religious Complex. This is why I don't believe Sanders, or believe in Sanders. I think he's just another mule for the Corporate State and either he already has been or he could very easily be bought by the very sicko sociopaths that now control the levers of our government. Naomi Klein is right; we need a plan and we, as a country, need to come together on the same page, and soon, if we are going to save our own bacon. If not, if people don't turn off Fox News and the mesmerizing sports games, and put down the beer and stop partying, if people don't stop playing the repeating corporate-political game of "precipitate crisis then subtract civil rights," if people don't take the time to find out exactly what is going on and stop being so lazy about what is going on, then We, the People are going to wake up in a Corporate Dictatorship that will be the worst hell-on-earth since the Spanish Inquisition... we are already more than half way there now.

    I disagree with her Bernie redderic. We all saw, heard the DNC emails that basically showed no respect or support for Bernie. Hillary was their only choice. Having said that, I agree with many of the other comments...

      please learn to think for yourself and stop being an authoritarian follower, "a lemming".
      it doesn’t take a gumshoe journalist to connect the dots between Soros’ dollars and progressive causes. But it does take a paranoiac imagination to turn those dots into a constellation that shows how one man is plotting to take over the world.
