Melissa McCarthy was told that she was going to have a hard time making it in the entertainment industry when she first came to Hollywood in 1996. Thankfully, this didn’t end up being the case. In 2000, she received her first big break when she was cast as the supporting character Sookie St. James in the series Gilmore Girls. The character quickly became a fan favorite. When Gilmore Girls came off the air, Melissa was given a starring role on her very own sitcom, titled Mike & Molly. A year later, Melissa appeared in the 2011 comedy film Bridesmaids. Melissa’s performance in the film yielded the actress more acclaim than ever before, and she soon became a Hollywood leading lady!
All of these accomplishments Melissa managed to make while still maintaining her excessive weight, proving that her critics had been wrong during her early career when they told her there wasn’t a room for a woman her size in Hollywood. Now that Melissa has lost much of her iconic weight, fans are speculating that she has been losing roles for the opposite reason! Mike & Molly was canceled in 2016 after six seasons, and many speculated it was because Melissa was too skinny to keep playing her character. It’s not always body shaming if you point out that someone is overweight. There are health issues involved and we have way too much toxic positivity in the society where we praise people for literally just existing. If big is really beautiful, then how come any celebrity who was overweight and loses weight gets all excited and celebrates their weight loss?

It's something about developing extra body mass that I'm thinking most folks aren't aware of: The impact of emotional abuse(s). I married an overweight lady in my late '30s, my second marriage, her first. During our life together she shared how her mother had shamed her from childhood about being "fat" but, she was in fact not fat at the beginning, it was just a ploy to control her. Later on, in therapy, a counselor validated that emotional projection does impact a person in negative ways. Melissa's experience is a solid verification of how the stress of carrying shame aggravates the spirit and can actually lead to developing obesity.

Melissa’s portrayal of Lee Israel in Can You Ever Forgive Me? was brilliant. That was because when Melissa agreed to take the role, she knew Lee had been a real person, no longer alive, and Melissa could not possibly duplicate her Jewish Brooklyn voice and mannerisms. Melissa managed to convey Lee’s loneliness and difficulty getting along with people. It was a tough acting gig, and Melissa pulled it off.
The screenplay for Can You Ever Forgive Me? does not reveal where Lee spent her childhood or teen years.

I have a cousin disabled by excess weight and damage to her body from it. She is living in a nursing home which provide her a community and necessary support. She has lung damage and other issues. I am very glade Ms. McCarthy seems to be avoiding the dangers my cousin could not. God bless her.

I always liked Melissa McCarthy. I never viewed her as “the fat woman”. I always saw her as the “downright funny woman”. ( Until her movies ) I always liked her character on “Gilmore Girls”. LOVED her as Molly on “Mike & Molly”. I wish that show had gone on for decades. I would have eagerly awaited each new episode. Broke my heart when that show was cancelled. One thing I particularly enjoyed and respected about that show, it helped you understand and respect the the trials and tribulations of obese people.
Her movies….she seemed to be cast as “angry woman” in her movies that I watched. That got tired real quick. Especially “Spy”. The dialog in that was vulgar and hostile. It crossed the line. I pitied her in the all female “Ghostbusters”. Her talent alone was not enough to salvage that train wreck. However, I sincerely hope she is the lead in an upcoming COMEDY movie. Fingers crossed.

Admittedly, I have never seen the Gilmore Girls. BUT...I have seen Melissa McCarthy in tons of other things including The Life of David Gale and St. Vincent. She just seems like such a hoot! And to get to star with Jason Statham AND Jude Law...not to mention Miranda Hart...well, no wonder SPY is such a cool AND funny movie (I'm just a little jealous!) And Mike & Molly was one of THE best sitcoms on TV. I think Dan & Rosanne were the first plus-size couple I can remember from TV, but Mike & Molly were even better, in my opinion. Would love to see Melissa and Billy reunited in a "next generation" M & M project. (Any TV big-wigs out there reading this? YOU SHOULD BE!!!)
