Thank you for the insight. I had an etalage of 21-16"x20" giclée framed photographs (from b+w negative) and an experienced artist suggested I sign each photograph on the print with a pencil. It was my first big hanging. This was about 2005 I think. Thanks again.
This video was informative and so well presented... Short, sweet and to the point. Thank you for taking the time to help all artists, whether creating for one's own pleasure or as a professional, protecting the ownership of their creations. Best wishes to you!

Thank you! Delightful and instructive. Horace would approve. New subscriber. Where might I get some quality acrylic pens, or, for that matter, one of those amazing stamps?
Many thanks, I really appreciate that. I've bought the acrylic markers I use from local arts & craft store. The other ones are by Liquitex and the other I think is just a local store brand. The stamp I got from my wife as a gift, and she literally just googled custom stamps and picked the top result that shipped to Finland. 😁
Let’s all sign our work the same way ! I honestly think if you’re creative you don’t need someone to tell you how or where to make your mark , so many masters did not do it the same way but to each their own, or sign the same way and be the same if you can’t figure it out. It’s all good.
I feel like my signature ends up looking like a child's writing and kind of decreases the quality of the work. maybe because I try to do it with a brush. but your idea of using a marker is excellent. do you know if markers exist in oil medium, as that's what I paint in? thanks for this.
Same here, I struggled using a brush and thus switched to a marker. I then also used an old scrap canvas of mine and practices with it until all the empty spots were filled. Tested slight variations to see which signature worked the best 😊🙌
@tiwantiwaabibiman2603 I read your reply... OK. But it's still 'not' required, as per the copyright law. You can add the symbol if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy. No one really cares one way or another.
@lisaw5604 My comment wasn't rude... more factual. If you found it that rude, you must live a very sheltered life. Anyway, as the law is written, you're not required to put a copyright symbol on your artwork. You'll have just as much protection under the law with it or without. You're not even required to sign it as well... it's considered intellectual property and automatically protected.
Hello from Canada! This is a great video, thank you for creating it. I think your stamp is very cool. Is this your signature or is it a brand? I am new to your channel so please forgive me for not knowing. 🌸

I had my work stolen and used on a website (by my Art Ed graduate program of all things). They lost the original. Thank you for this!
I collect an artist who discovered people were doing similar work and claiming it was his, so he started putting his actual hand print on the backs.

Does signing or initializing the art work protect it from copyright theft or give it any protections, anyone??😮

I sign and date your artwork. The date is very important. I had several pieces I’m not sure if I did them 30 years ago or 50 years ago.
I have added the © on a Weebley website page but I never thought of adding it to my signature on the back of my actual artworks. Thx!
I think in this day and age with the internet and people feeling entitled to take anything they want, I think your right, the use of the © symbol is basically letting people know that you understand your rights and the law. They dont want to steal from someone who knows their rights or who may drag them into court for theft of the artworks imagery. Thieves are lazy, they want something easy, no chance of getting sued or prosecuted.
I think I will add the © symbol on the back of my artworks moving forward not just as after thought in the Description section of my artwork on a web page.
Those first pieces bring back memories. My mums house had the self same design on all the ceilings in artex painted white.
Crazy how styles come and go 😁

There are several brands. For example even Sharpie has oil based markers 💐

Whether signed on the front or back all signatures should include the copyright ©️ symbol after the signature - especially artists in the US. Always add the copyright ©️ symbol!!!
Never heard of that before, why is that? 🤔
It's not required.... as per the copyright ©️ law the symbol is not required on a work of art. If you don't believe me, look it up.
@brentjohnson3032 Oh wow! A waste of time opportunity to respond to man-splaining about something in art I have professional practical knowledge of... OK, here goes...
Actually, in the USA it is. As a veteran for infringement. I'm a 40 year veteran artist, curator and art director it's not a matter of requirement. It's an acknowledgment to the world that you know your federal (and some international) rights as an artist. It's a warning to others, especially when posting works online as well as buyers.
I teach this. No, you aren't required to add the ©️ with your signature because the copyright of visual artwork is considered applied upon the completion of the work. When dealing with and preventing infringement, the symbol makes your case. People have and will always infringe on artists' copyright s at some point (even by other visual artists)...
It's a legal safe guard step to the advantage of the artist (and their rep). Unless the artist literally sells away their copyrights, add the symbol...
