  • Understanding the physical features of a horse and how they affect its value and ability to run is essential to being a good owner or handicapper. Wasabi Ventures Stables held a webinar about this topic with George Adams of Housatonic Bloodstock.

This is the best in-depth analysis of what conformation "works" in racing and staying sound and keeping the horse from having too many vet visits and having to stand in ice buckets. I would think that an under at the knee fault would end up in knee slab fractures, btw.

The first thing that hits you when you look at Justified is how solidly grounded he is, right through his body. This might sound an anathema in racing terms but it describes balance in a way that also implies everything is where it should be and that he is standing firmly on all four legs while in repose, four solid posts with the right angles for speed and soundness, it implies bone is more than sufficient, that his skeletal structure can accommodate good amount of muscling and impact. Even if his neck comes a bit too low off the wither and he could be more on the leg ie less oblong he is what is called a good "type".
Generally you can expect certain problems by "type" alone, this you learn by looking at lots of horses. That is light of bone horses for example will often come with certain negative traits that often repeat in that "type" etc.
My problem with TB breeding is that it is often at the expense of the horse. That is to say people will use horses with less than ideal conformation based just on pedigree for one example, such sires are sold at truly inflated prices purely based on that pedigree. The end result is that the horse deteriorates. It has indeed become incredibly difficult to find good grounded TBs as a result. Mare lines are becoming worse and worse and this is critical because when you do the same with mares you are simply rolling the dice each and every time with what you are producing. You have to actively breed away from genetic diseases like "soft pasterns". TBs are urgently in need of outcrossing to other horse breeds. But the point I want to make is that TBs are so inbred they have such a narrow gene pool al lof them that pedigrees actualy play a very very small part in any success. Ignore the marketing it's all hype geared to making max profit.
Non genetic differences between individulas play a much bigger part in success so does training and other purely environmental influences. So don't fret if you cant buy yourself some over priced sire for you mares because you are getting the entire package good and bad who ever you choose. Rather choose for correct conformation and idealy not two copies of any of the many defective genes in the breed to improve your mares, as this is probably the sounder (pun not intended)_ way to success overall. The individual horse has to do the rest. Give it hope, let it thrive and never break it's heart.

I thought Into Mischief was a bit over at the knee.. I think it's also called "buck knee." It is still better than calf knee.

I am surprised you did not do the confirmation on the greatest horse in history with near perfect confirmation, Secretariat or his sire Bold Ruler. that would have been informative as the model for perfection.

You are quite Ms. Hauls, the omission of the Legendary "Secretariat" is unforgivable.. Nobody who sees the videos of his astounding 31 Length win of the 3rd leg of the American Triple Crown in 1973. As was said a number of times, "He was Not a Horse , He was SECRETARIAT..!" But equally unforgiveable is the omission of "Heart", that indefinable but essential attitude of determination. Without that you just have A Pretty Horse, no matter how perfect the conformation or how desirable is the bloodline. The perfect example of that is the Full Brothers(same dam and same sire) "Sharif Dancer" and "Snaafi Dancer", belonging to His Highness Sheik Mohammed al Maktoum. A price of 3 .5 million U$ He won The English Derby, the following year the Sheik bought the Full Brother "Snaafi Dancer", who looked perfect in every aspect, for a world record price for a yearling of 13.5 million U$..! The Latter was utterly useless and never raced. He was sent to stud unraced and proved to be sterile.. Conformation and Breeding alone are no Guarantee of a Champion...!

To me, Justify is short backed and built vertically. His pasterns are just one degree short of being straight in the pasterns.

Whilst it is an interesting topic, as the "expert" pointed out, the annals of racing history contain numerous examples of horses with less than perfect conformation who became champions. I still say that the most important qualityis what the racing farternity refers to as "heart". Not so much the size of the actual organ, although of course the legend that was and still is SECRETARIAT did have an abnormally large heart. No in racing terms "heart" is that elusive element of sheer determination to win, that Secretariat displayed so convincingly, so often and that cannot be determined until the horse begins training. One should also remember the "notoriously" disappointing "Snaafi Dancer", who set a then world record price for a yearling of some 13 million U$. He was bought by Sheik Mohammed al Maktoum(sic)of Dubai, who had purchased his much fancied full brother the year previously. "Snaafi Dancer" at the time of sale looked like a million(or several in fact) and walked like a dream. Unfortunately that was all he did . He showed absolutely no ability and perhaps more importantly no inclination to even try at all. He retired to stud, unraced and then proved to be sterile..! So looks and conformation are no guarantee of ability.
Fortunately for his connexions, SECRETARIAT had both, coupled with amazing ability and that oh so elusive "heart", the determination to Win...!! And Win he did, he did so in a style
    which has never been repeated..!

Not cow hocks, They are rooster hocks. I would think this would be a serious problem for a race horse because they will not have the power in their rear action while running.

I'm not sure how serious being cow hocked is, but you are correct; cow hocked is essentially knock kneed in the hind end.

My Saddlebred was offset in his left knee, and ended up with a splint just below his knee which made him a little ouchy now and then. He was a show horse who carried pads and weighted shoes, and for those who like to attack even Saddle bred people for the pads and weighted shoes, remember, it is the Walking Horse people who are trying to get that "big lick," not us Saddlebred people. One woman who tried to verbally bully me, not listening to me when I told her that those of us in the Saddlebred industry are not trying to get any "big lick," so no sharp objects on the frog and no soring. If she kept at it, (the bullying) she would have been decked by me even though she was much taller than me.

I purchased a filly at 3 years old who had a R knee that was slightly offset~ She won 7 of 9 races; but only raced for three years. I was told NOT to race her by a vet-friend of mine at
six years old (where she only raced one race in February) Then we began breeding her. Everything else of her was beautiful.

No the slope of his shoulder in front is not the same as the slope of his hindquarters.. Justify is well balanced and has stayer conformation because he is built close to level- not downhill.. Close to level means that his height at the point of hip to the thickest part of his neck is close to level. If you run a horizontal line from his point of hip forward to the thickest part of his neck it will run downhill just a couple of inches. You need to take Dr. Deb Bennetts' conformation classes and learn your subject matter before you spout off and make erroneous statements. Hope you enjoy learning.

Wait , wait, surely you know this information you are giving your audiences on the casual willingness to breed individuals with KNOWN DEF0ECTS ; whether genetic , congenital or randomly occurring outcrops is total prevairication, completely immoral,, dishonest and possibly dangerous for the inexperienced client. The whole point in maintaining a stud books , some of which are thousands of years older, is to insure ongoing purity of its members!!!! You also are not so subtly encouraging viewers to casually accept the fact that they should expect to pay exorbitantly unrealistic prices for defective, broken down, un-breedable creatures that wouldn't be safe enough for their kids to hang out with!!!!!!!
