Adam recently made a replica of the royal crown featured in the musical Hamilton and the show 'The Crown'--most famously the centerpiece of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. And upon finishing that build, Adam wanted to immediately try making it again using everything he learned in his first attempt. What follows is a rare One Day Build revisited where the second replica may look like the original at a glance, but done using new construction methods and finishing techniques that makes it so much better!

I love the irony that in 2021 Adam is using aluminum and finishing techniques as an inexpensive way to re-create the gold that the real St. Edwards Crown uses to indicate wealth yet in 1661, using aluminum to make a crown would have been an even more impossible display of wealth.

    • @RFC-3514
      @RFC-3514 3 ปีที่แล้ว +61

Considering aluminium wasn't isolated until 1825, it wasn't really a matter of wealth, it was a matter of needing a time machine. Once industrial refinement got going (in the late 1850s), its price dropped below gold pretty quickly.

@@nodwick4231 - No, it wouldn't have been "possible but costly", because _no one knew it existed._
Native aluminium has only been found in trace amounts in very obscure locations (ex., in a volcano, in deep-drill cores under the sea), and no one knows how it was formed (the most popular theory seems to be it was "refined" by microbes). Even in those places, it's usually just tiny specks of aluminium, encased in different metals.
Even if they had come across any (which is unlikely), no one in 1661 would have been able to identify it as a separate metal, let alone know how to produce or obtain enough to make a crown.
I suggest reading "Characteristics and possible origin of native aluminum" (by Zhong Chen, et al.) and "Native aluminum: does it exist?" (by Vesselin Dekov, et al.).
And if you do know anything about aluminium being formed by striking bauxite with lightning, I suggest publishing it.

The crown is more symbol than wealth imo. It's 5 pounds of gold and jewels most of which are easily obtainable. It can be easily duplicated by most of the top 1% or probably top 20%. Food for thought. Also the monarchy the crown represents technically has no formal power now. The royals are justified these days because they generate an economy. In my opinion probably the real symbol of power.

Your "brute force drawing" is an excellent method for learning to draw for real. There are actually teachers out there who recommend it, and there's a tool called a proportional divider that allows you to do just that, but on a different (fixed) scale. This is all to say, that's exactly the way you SHOULD have approached making a fairly faithful recreation, from an artistic perspective.

Something interesting is that until just over 100 years ago, the gems were not a permanent part of the crown. Whenever the crown was needed for a coronation, a set of gems were acquired, set on the crown, and then after used they were removed to be used elsewhere.
Edit: link to wikipedia section discussing this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Edward%27s_Crown#20th_century_to_present_day (also if you scroll up there is an engraving of how it was set with gems in the 17th century which looks very different from how it looks today)

For most people, it is a terrible idea. Adam is a special case in that regard. Skin changes over time, so it would never be accurate. Fortunately, Adam's use case isn't about accuracy, it's about a rough estimate. He doesn't need the accuracy because he has years of experience to go off of. He just needs a quick sense of size. He also got it quite late in life, if he had gotten it when he was younger it would be worthless, probably not even good for estimates.

As somebody who is a huge fan of tattoos, and is extremely picky when it comes to the design of tattoos… After years of watching Adam, this is the first time I’ve actually noticed his tattoo? And I’ll be honest… At first, I absolutely hated it!! But after a while of watching this video and seeing him use his tattoo to help with his builds, it’s absolutely perfect for him!! And I completely understand why he chose to get a tattoo like this.. Even though I would never ever ever get a tattoo like this myself, or like it on anyone else. For Adam (or people who do similar work/hobbies as he does) it’s an absolutely amazing idea, as he will be constantly measuring things for his build wont he? And I’m sure that he can never find a ruler if/when he needs one. So to have a ruler on your arm/skin, it’s perfect!!☺️

Hey Adam, there is this stuff called solder paste that you can use to do what you were doing with the jewels. You can also, if all of the material can take a little heat, stick everything together with the solder paste and dots of super glue and then place all of it in a toaster oven. You then can heat the parts on one side or both until the soldier paste melts. The superglue lets go about the same temp as the soldier paste taking hold.
The taoster oven can never be used for food again after this, but they can be useful for tempering small steel parts or annealing copper alloys.

A thought on Adam's paint overspray challenge from one of the recent videos -- consider building a box that has one side open sized so you can fit a couple of Filtrete filters in it. Out the other side add a connector you can attach this to your dust system. When you paint, attach this to your dust system, aim it where you're painting and turn it on. it'll suck in most of the overspray and lodge it into the filtrete's and eject the rest of the air out of the shop... Without needing a permit for a formal spray hood area.

The thing I like about Adam is that in an age where EVERYONE is VERY territorial about their techniques and methods, Adam shares practically EVERY tip and trick that he knows because to him, good technique and good results supersede the ego of the creator. I’m sure he doesn’t share ALL his secrets but he always makes sure to cover every contingency, possible misstep, and error in judgment, again in the interest of a superior result. Even when things go wrong, he dissects the error to find out WHERE he went wrong to learn from his mistake. It’s like messing around in the garage with your best friend on a Saturday afternoon. I wish the rest of the world had Adam’s enthusiasm and willingness to share. Thank you, Mr. Savage!

It is funny to hear you say of the method that you used to draw the Fleur De Lis, "this isn't drawn using any natural ability I have to draw", and then go on to describe the way that you measured and compared to recreate an image that you wanted. That is what artist are doing when they hold out their thumb or paintbrush to the model. They are measuring and comparing. Many times they will also transfer a grid to the underdrawing of their work and paint over it so that it is never seen, not to conceal it but just as part of the process. You sir are an artist in the purest tradition. Plus, you came up with the time honored method handed down from the masters on your own, so, bonus points!

@1:01:06 what Adam says about "the present is the time" is something i hold close to myself. Over the years i would gift my close friends presents for their birthdays or any other occasion, and like any other person, its really tough to pick out a good one for them to enjoy. Simply buying a present can be quite bland if the item can be easily bought from the receiver, and growing up with little to no money, i've learnt that making gifts can be cost effective and holds more value.
My recent gift was a bowl of 1000 hand craft cranes. its sounds simple but 1000 cranes is nothing to scoff at when you're doing it alone. Another was a small 5x7inch artwork i've done.
I truly believe hand craft items hold much more value as gifts

I LOVE your energy and playfulness Adam. You have the curiosity and giddyness of a precocious little school boy. All your videos are so entertaining plus I've learned so many tips and tricks and best practices. Thank you for being you. ❤️
