I got hurt at work and could no longer pay my for my house and all the bills that you have with a house so I sold it and got a camper and all the money I saved by living out of the camper I had it paid off in two years on a six year lone. I had the best time of my life and saw different places it was the best thing I ever did...
We bought a 19 ft Epro last year during the lockdowns, so we could get OUT and enjoy life. My firm went remote and I have been working in the house since 3/23/20; so buying a camper was a mental life-saver. With the camper, we don't have to worry about finding bathrooms that are open and can boondock anywhere. Also, should the economy tank and we have to sell our house, we won't be homeless; we can move right into the camper.
I agree to try and stay out of debt as much as you can and pay cash like Dave suggests. But I also believe it's important to enjoy this short life and make memories with your family. That's why I took a loan out for a camper
We're on our 3rd Jayco. Our first one we used 5yrs sold out and made more than we paid. Second one we used 7rs sold for 3k less than what we paid for it. We do use them as much as possible.
Everyone has a different “normal” in life. What is normal for people who live in a city or more urban/suburban area is different for people in more rural areas. We have had our 5th wheel for 19 years. Unfortunately, we are only able to use it a few times a year (due to work and kid schedules) but it is paid for. We take care of it. We plan on doing more traveling in the next few years. It might not be right for someone like Dave R. But is it something we absolutely enjoy. That is what life is about. Thank you for your video on sealing your RV roof. I’m going to be brave and do that on ours in a few weeks.
Two years ago, I would have said that RV's were depreciating assets. Now, I see used RV's for sale at asking prices higher than their original sale price. I've even heard of people selling 5 year old RV's for more than the original MSRP! So, for now, though perhaps not forever, "some" RV's are indeed an appreciating asset. It's a bit crazy! Thank you, Dave. Always good to see a new video from you! Take care now.
I see both points, but it really depends on a lot of factors.. Like, job, how responsible the 19 year old is, area, ect.. Without knowing the person, it is really truly hard to say..
you are right in this case for so many reasons. Its an emergency back up if something is wrong with your house and so many other things to much to mention. Of course I did know somebody who lived in someones laundry room for while (cheap). You live cheaper when you have money in a lot of other ways. The real rich people have a good women, friends and likes himself. Thank you very much.
Yes and no. An RV will depreciate over time. And it is a bad financial investment. However, I do not know anyone who bought an RV as a financial investment. They all bought them to invest time and have a better quality of life. Enjoy your RV. That's where it is money well spent.
In the young man's situation, I have to agree. It's a "recreational vehicle." If he's not buying it for that reason then it's probably the wrong reason. In your case it was a good investment for you.
I’m more in your category than this guy you mentioned, I’ll check out the link. I’m full time in a Class C RV for the last 6 years since I retired. We live in the real world.
We bought our 12' for 12.5k, and had it 2yrs and sold it for 12k. Wish we had never sold it...I went on a 2 day trip and slept in my suv instead of a hotel, my daughter called me a hobo..lol..it was fun! Dunno who this Dave you speak of...
I think Dave’s argument would be; he’s not against campers but only get one you can afford and pay cash for. I’m not saying you’re right or wrong but it’s just part of his philosophy
A vacation is a 'depreciating' asset. You get 100% zero return. Not every expenditure can be measured by roi. If person A gets the same life experience from their RV as person B gets from a week in London, a week in Paris and a week in South Africa then how do you keep score? They both spent the same $ and if person A were to GIVE AWAY their RV after using it and appreciate their time with it to the same level as the world traveller why does Dave Ramsey care?
Some people are too arrogant to admit when they are wrong. I notice he never changes his opinion. So if he once said no to campers, he will always say no to them, regardless if they are now selling higher, and if the caller has different needs
Lol....there's no bigger depreciating asset than paying rent. You'll never get your money back renting. Unless you rent to own, and even then you will have generally paid more over time than it was worth. That's just how renting works.
Any rv is a depreciating asset, that does not mean it’s a bad investment. If you go buy a suit it is definitely a depreciating asset but if it gets you a job it was a good investment, the two are not opposites. As far as the kid who called there is just not enough data to know if Ramey’s advice was sound or not. I can think of several situations where Ramey would be correct and several where buying the trailer would be the correct choice.
Thanks! Stay safe from Ida. Speaking of Ida, true story, I had a math teacher somewhere around 7th grade, her name was Ida. She came to school one day with a brand new perm. Her curls were so tight she looked like a poodle. So of course I barked at her like a dog (yes that was mean, being a stupid kid, not the bully type, just stupid). So she sent me to the principal's office. He asked why I was there. I told him I barked at Mrs Moore because of her hair. He laughed so hard. He refused to paddle me, but made me promise that I wouldn't tell her. He usually gave me 4 hits, not that day.
I saw that video of Dave Ramsey and I disagreed with him as well. I felt that telling that young man to get a roommate and rent a place did the young man an unjust. The young man planned on living in the camper and he could save so much money while doing his landscaping business and lifeguarding. I hope he doesn't listen to Dave Ramsey. I think Dave Ramsey is out-of-touch with the reality in some of the situations he gives advice on as it doesn't apply to this modern world.
You’re so right!! The young man was full steam ahead attitude. I’d rather come home to something I own, versus come home to discover my roommate has girlfriend over for 5th night in a row. No toilet paper, and he’s not got his half of rent. This young man seemed very independent with big future.
@@davesrvchannel4717 sidenote do you have any videos on living in a camper trailer full-time? We are going to buy one to live in instead of rent due to my partner is in the military. Thank you Dave.

I think his best work was intimidating students in Hells kitchen. Not giving financial advice. You kno, scream, squall and bawl, lol. 😂👍👍 He could find fault with Chef Boy-ar-Dee!
Dave Ramsey seems like a miserable human being. I cannot imagine him camping or anything to do with fun. I have watched lots of his episodes too, he has great advice to build wealth, but I have heard other times he is against campers or anything recreational. Basically his teachings are eat beans and rice, rice and beans, don't do anything fun. Be miserable until you have paid everything off. Then be miserable watching your money grow in mutual growth stocks. Do this until you are more miserable, with more money. Hope and pray your wife doesn't leave you, and your kids hate you for such a miserable life, while you pay rent instead of own.
That's about maybe 1/2 right! He teaches spend within your means & pay off debt so can live like no one else! When don't have payments & fund a emergency fund it general freedom you up!!!

you get a lot of return on investment for a depreciating asset. Dave might not be so humbug if he tried it himself
I asked Muppy what she thought, her vote goes to owning a camper versus paying rent.
Muppy has never paid a days rent in her 9 dog years
