"Problems are not there to test, the problems are there for you to test & to learn from!" i'm definitely hanging this quote on my desk! Thank you soooo much!
for college, I suggest studying an upcoming course through the summer on your own. For instance if you have chemistry 1 next semester, focus a month in summer on learning the material. When you are in the actual class you will have a general understanding of each topic, and all you will have to do is iron out the details.
rafael soria Haha at least in the summer you can learn without being under much pressure. You will be able to learn whenever your'e in the mood. Just drink a cup a coffee put on instrumentals and you're good to go.. Good luck!
I used this strategy for my math 101 course. Divide and conquer. I ended up making a 100 on the final and a 97 in the class. There is no hiding from problem solving. No grey area. You know it or you do not. That is why I love science and math.
I believe that one self-defeating thought is that some person in class is taking significantly less time to get through the material and still ace the test, but a counter argument I use for that is "Well, if that so-and-so was really that smart, they wouldn't be in the same room as I am, they should already be doing something more worthwhile if they are really of that caliber", btw, great video, cold hard truth!!
The video may be long, and yea, I've heard this all before, but to hear it from someone in the same situation, that has succeeded, and has the same path as myself, makes this video extremely useful. Thanks for making it!
Dude, would you consider taking a job as my shoulder-angel? Or my Navi? Or my roommate? I now you're a doctor but I mean... I can pay you in friendship and appreciation.
My god I have been subscribed for years but never watched all these study vids.. absolute GOLD!!!!! I watch a lot of study TH-camrs but they just do not resonate with me. I appreciate your comprehensiveness and emphasis on mastery over subjects!!! Thank you Doc!!!!!
Very important vid , I wish my academic counselor woulda shared this knowledge. Your a life saver. Bio classes are so tough and I had to learn the hard way too n have burnt out over it. I am pushing through and trying to stay strong , advice like yours saves years of withdrawals
Thanks for the advice. Im 25 and just now switching to a biology major from a major in spanish education (I know...my family/everyone thinks Im crazy too) So Im literally starting over in school and havent taken a science class since high school. This makes me feel a little more at ease about the many years to come.
oh thank you for being so straight forward. My coaches are either flirting with the point but end the session before they tell me. This is just great advice and information.
I'm a senior in high school looking ahead to college and really appreciate this video man. I got a 5 in bio but a 4 in Chem and think I could've done better if I applied these study strategies I half assed my homework every night lmao. In college I probably won't do EVERY problem as many of them are redundant (especially in a calculus class) but I'll do one of each type. I assume you don't mean every problem literally cause ain't nobody got time for that
So true. Work the problems! It teaches you how to work *any* problem. If something comes up you didn't understand, work more problems in that specific area. Also, when bored of reading, draw simple doodles of the diagrams in your text and label the important stuff. Over and over. Repetition is key. You'll be amazed how those doodles present themselves to you on exam day.
Since I found your videos, I've been watching one or two everyday. I'm going to start pharmacy school this coming Fall. Looks like I'm gonna be stuck watching your videos the next four years! You are very encouraging. And funny ;)
Hahaha...I was on the fence about buying the solutions manual for my g-Chem class but you've just totally convinced me to just get it! Also, I love your energy...so motivating! I am also usually one of the last few students left during an exam, barely finishing on time & it always bothers me when other students finish before me. It makes me question my abilities but I know this is not the way to think about it. Thanks for your tips, very helpful.
He gives more personal stories that have been proven to be effective for him. And teachers never emphasize as much about the questions in the back of the book and checking them all at the library or with the professor. It is great advice.
I'm in an intro to Chemistry course in college and of course I waited until the day before the test to study (my test is tomorrow.) As I was procrastinating watching TH-cam videos I decided to search something that can benefit me and came across this video. You make it seem so simple and I'm sure it is! I'm just so lazy and I never want to do anything but I'm going to try and take it step by step. I've honestly haven't even opened my chemistry textbook yet and class started almost 2 months ago. I hope I can do this.
Hahah I remember I passed! Barely, but I did study super last minute, like literally the night before. Imagine if I prepared for days! It's a good strategy to use, along with the notes the teacher provides. I normally fail my exams when I study last minute but this time I had a plan and managed to focus on the important stuff and do a lot of practice problems to get the hang of it.
Hey! Thank you for all these great advice! I found your video a bit late since I am in my last year of college. I also had to learn the hard way since high school and college was so different. If there is one advice that outshines the other would be the "no time limit to understand a chapter". Anyways, can't wait to share this with friends and also see more of your other videos.
This may seem obvious to some, as you explain in the video yourself, but was an eye opener for me. Thank you for posting the video :) -From a grateful first semester Marine Engineering student
I applied these techniques for my Orgo classes and did very well. Like Dr. Oss said, a key component is becoming comfortable with learning from the questions you answered wrong. Put in some effort and orgo will be fun and rewarding. It was my favorite class in undergrad.
I am going to start my freshman year in college this August and my dream since kindergarten was to become a pediatrician..discovering your videos is like a blessed sign from above..thank you so much..hopefully i can be as successful as you :)
probably the best advice I've ever gotten, chemistry was my only C in high school, now I'm getting an A in college chem following this advice while everyone else is struggling.
Also, keep track what you get wrong. Don't count partial credit, or you just needed to do one more things, or just divide by two, etc. Each one that you don't get exact final answer count as wrong, and take your average. It helps to better emulate the test situation and you give yourself a realist assessment
As a freshman in college Bro this video was really helpful and informative not to mention bluntly real. I'm watching this while reading my A&P book for an exam that's in 20 days.
@DocOssareh: Thanks for the video! Science and Math are my forte and these tips are awesome. I especially need to try to timer advice because I tend to take my time on tests and check my answers at least twice on exams. Will be coming back for more videos and best of luck in Medical School!
Thank you for your advice. I am a freshman in college and for my first semester I pretty did well. I will continue using the tips that I have learned from you because I will take many science classes. Thank you again.
Very explanatory. In my high school science classes when it came to the problems, that's all the teachers talked about and discussed in class. But, they also stressed the importance on keywords throughout the textbook. *
THank you so much! it really solve my misery. i used to read my text book like for 48294238 times and still i can't solve my problems without asking people for the answers. i'm thankful that i watched the video. now i know what to focus in my science subject. you saved me tons.
I love the money analogies that went with the explanations. Good video either way, thank you. It convinced me to check other of your videos. Let's see how it goes.
Hey Doc, I'm taking Vertebrate Physiology over the summer, and my exam is in two weeks. I'm gonna try to implement your strategies to do well! Keep it up bro!
Thank you so much!!! Its so simple but it really does work. I was averaging a C on my in Chem and after doing this I almost got an A on my last exam! If you are struggling please try this I promise you'll see improvement
I don't know about you guys but what works for me is on every chapter that is covered on the exam, I make my own outlines of the chapters on a word document, and save it to my USB memory stick and my PC just in case. I basically like to copy the concepts from the book onto my outlines of every chapter, but I like to break them down and keep them simple if they are too technical. Type in every bold words from the chapters and write down their definitions, break down the concepts and keep them simple, and only focus on the main points and also highlighting concepts that require a more in depth specific look, put all these on my outline, etc. Also if the book comes with a mastering Pearson or any other program that is designed to help you better understand and practice the content, I take advantage of this too by taking the mock quizzes or exam that come along with the program. Once I am done taking those mock quizzes/exams I like to review the work; see which questions I got wrong, copy all the questions and correct answers that are displayed at the end of the practice quiz/exam on a word document or flash cards (since writing with actual hands is better for memorization), and review all this before the exams. I cannot stress the number of times Ive come across questions on real exams that are similar to the question that are on the mock quizzes/exams that come with these programs, they are mostly just different in language and format but same concept. One class I even had real exam questions that were on the mock quizzes/exams with the exact same word/answers, so this does help a lot. well I don't know about you guys but this is what works for me. Making your own outlines on a word document are especially useful for a final cumulative exam.
Great advice I wish I could have saw your channels last year when I was struggling in a&p #1 I would read the chapters over and over again I should have did the quiz questions in the back of the chapter thank you so much for sharing! :-)
I wish I had seen this video 3 months ago. I am failing my bio class and will have to retake it this fall. Hopefully I can follow your tips and be successful next time!
I could have used this advice when I was struggling with Morrison and Boyd at this time in 1976. All my prof said was to do all the problems, and there was no advice on the approach, nor how to prepare for tests. Of course, I have figured most of this out in the meantime, and way too late.
Your videos are very helpful! I am going into pharmacy and a ton of the pre reqs are the same as the ones for med school so your tips definitely help. Thanks!!!!
This is a good video. I literally went home after class, I made note cards, I highlighted notecards, I read them in my spare time until I was sick of reading them. But I did not forget them and did very well on my tests. You don’t have to kill yourself to get thru these classes, but some effort is required
Since I am slow when it comes to remembering science. What I find that helps is to study slow. What I do is, is that when I am looking at a concept that I want to remember; I write down each word while reading the concept in the text book trying to comprehend the information in my head, also trying to form a picture.
Me too I need discipline. I know I can do it I just have to push harder. I am in my first year of college and it is the end of the year, but I know I can do better. I have it in me.
what sucks for me is that im going for biological sciences in university, and no matter where i go in the internet, there is ONLY COMPLAINTS! everyone tells me there is no jobs, that i will be unemployed forever, or i will spend 6 years minimun after university getting a phd so that i can work a not so good job teaching at ok universities... it's really depressing, frustrating and sad to go to university with these thoughts in mind... even though i know that you need to try and be the top of your class, network the hell out of your college professors and peers, do your own experiments on free time, internships, work for free for professors, get your names in their papers, and all that good stuff, i still think that it might all be in vain =[ so maybe i'm changing to biochemistry or somenthing related next year, only so that i can keep working in science, but with a focus on industry instead.
+Paulo H I agree...bio is a stepping stone for further sciences - you could teach high school science or be a lab rat at a medical school. If you have a ton of charisma, you could be a nature talk show host or work at a zoo or nature park. Good luck.
My prof already gives us load of hw, not enough time to do all the textbook problems :(, but it truly helps! I do as much I possibly can and I see results :) Great video!
If you're getting a bunch of homework, do the problems. If you're having trouble, read the part of the book that covers the problem. If the problems require you to go a step beyond what the book says (like you're missing one or more given variables) then do the practice problems given after each section until you can do the homework problems. This is how I made A's in Physics, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry.
Thank you very much, I really needed someone to yell at me and verbally shake me into studying. Now can you pleaseee make a video on how to make and stick to a day to day schedule in college? Thanks!!!
Can you please share tips on note-taking? The thing I have trouble most is spending too much time on taking notes. Do you take notes as you read? I have a hard time mentally moving onto practice problems until I have taken notes from the book or re-organized my notes from lecture. By the time I'm done with my notes, I am left with too little time for practice problems (which is what I want to get to in the 1st place!). However, if I don't start with notes, I feel too scatter-brained when doing practice problems. Any tips? Thank you. :)
READ and don't take notes on your first pass through of the book unless it's a bio/ memorization course. Just understand everything there... Then start doing practice problems. Get stuck? Use the solutions manual and learn how to do the problem....As he said in the video 1 day later try the problem again without looking at the solution manual this time... Repeat every step but reading the chapter again.... If it's a memorization course like bio then read the book for understanding then take notes on ONLY DETAILS. Then make Anki Flashcards or regular flashcards for the details. Good LUCK!
Awesome video! I was doing exactly what was said in this video but I just found it now. But each chapter definitely took me 4-6 hours to complete, maybe I study slow.
"Problems are not there to test, the problems are there for you to test & to learn from!" i'm definitely hanging this quote on my desk! Thank you soooo much!

Ariel Cruz I always plan on doing that..and well it doesnt happen. I just need to stop being lazy. Your suggestion is great tho.
rafael soria Haha at least in the summer you can learn without being under much pressure. You will be able to learn whenever your'e in the mood. Just drink a cup a coffee put on instrumentals and you're good to go.. Good luck!
+Ariel Cruz that is what I do, and you get into uni understanding concepts from day 1 :D
I only have 1 month left until school starts, I should buckle down and start working through the questions
Ariel Cruz i know. I have physiology and didn't study as well. So I am nervous now. But I will keep fighting

Teach me your ways.
Saving this video bc I've never been so motivated to study!

This video changed my frickin life. True Story.
Wow thank you man! You made me feel normal. Sometimes I did problems 3 times to get A's on the exams. I thought I was just stupid or something.
im a sophomore nursing major and this is my summer. thank god your video pepped talk me slowly to begin classes. I worship u

A tip: you can watch series on kaldrostream. Been using them for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Matthias Alonso yea, been watching on KaldroStream for since november myself =)

Thanks Doc. As a premed student this is extremely helpful. Time flies through your videos. You keep me interested.
I want to like this a thousand times. Your channel is really really helpful! Keep it up !!

That video was badass. Never heard those tricks. They will surely give me some edge. I am glad you are my kind.
Thanks for the video
Genius absolute genius! Using this method when I go to med school!!
THank you so much! it really solve my misery. i used to read my text book like for 48294238 times and still i can't solve my problems without asking people for the answers. i'm thankful that i watched the video. now i know what to focus in my science subject. you saved me tons.

Thanks for this :)
I'm starting a biology degree in a few weeks and I'm nervous as all hell. This really helps. :D
Hi Mr Mustaine,
Just wondering if u did infact complete ur bio degree? If so, did u find these methods helpful?
What happened to megadeath?
"40 questions. Easy."
My trig teacher just lectured us on not complaining on the 18 problems he assigned us over the weekend. :p
Hey Doc, I'm taking Vertebrate Physiology over the summer, and my exam is in two weeks. I'm gonna try to implement your strategies to do well! Keep it up bro!
thank you for taking the time to help us with our studying struggles. I am following the advise and adopting this study method, it does make sense.
Yay. Am really glad you made this video. Keep the good work. I dont know why but am proud of you.;-)
I like how encouraging this video is!! Thank you for the tips!!
Thank you so much!!! Its so simple but it really does work. I was averaging a C on my in Chem and after doing this I almost got an A on my last exam! If you are struggling please try this I promise you'll see improvement

I just love you maaaaan , thankssssss a lot ♥️
You are one of the reasons why medicine is fascinating
This video was super reassuring and very well explained! Love this guy! Keep up the good work
solution manual is a must for O-chem.
I loved this video. I never thought of it this way and this really helped me a lot.
Watch the video to the end. Its worth sharing to high school students too. Thanks for making it.

Absolutely love the way you inspire :)
Keep it up.
Thank you so much!!!! Your advice on how to study for science courses is extremely helpful :)
i agree... you think you know it but the only way to achieve the next level of understanding is by doing problems.
Your videos are great, really good advice and easy to wach. Thank you for keeping them up! :)

i would love to be a nature talk show lol.

omg thank you for this video it really helps alot. i will definetly be using this technique for all my future exams

Rip to my ears at 7:02
Goddamn, that gave me a ruptured eardrum
Good LUCK!
A1 advice.

Awesome video! I was doing exactly what was said in this video but I just found it now. But each chapter definitely took me 4-6 hours to complete, maybe I study slow.
