Indio (Monoprice) $99 Telecaster

You've seen the unboxing vids of guys who look the guitar over, play it a bit and then announce their "authoritative" opinions. And that's all they are - opinions. My videos look at guitars through the eyes (and ears) of a guitar tech. Actual measurements; spelling out flaws; seeing whether the guitar will play correctly or not - and giving you a more fact-base review of the guitar. If you can ...
Setup of a brand-new Glarry Telecaster, step-by-step.
มุมมอง 58K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Follow along as I show how to do a step-by-step guitar setup for you DIY guitar techs. Then, let's compare the $71 Glarry Telecaster electric guitar to a $899 Fender Deluxe Nashville Telecaster - just for fun!
I noticed you wiped the strings before installing with something not sure what that was
Thank you sir. I never thought about using strings as gauges when im without my scale. Super "duh" moment for me. Ive been learning to do my own work since im a 1-guitar guy and i just hate being without it when its being worked on. Take care!
Thanks for showing your work on a cheap guitar..a Glarry. I have usa teles a player tele and four Glarry .now Frankenstein's pretty much. I have purchased other cheap guitars but the Glarrys are pretty good for the under $100 . I have a question ..when the bridge/tailpiece /saddles don't line up with the nut what do you do to correct? Like my low E is fine but the high E is right at the edge and causes lots of problems like getting stuck under frets.
I disagree you definitely should not be doing everything in metric.. long live the inch.🇬🇧🇬🇧
Why all this long vid?
Great video and sorry for a superficial comment, but it just goes to show how weird my tastes are! The thumbnail with the string action gauge shows a little over 0.06...something like .065 (almost). I understand that PRS ships it's guitars with 0.07. I have to drop all my guitars down to 0.05 (well...0.055 for the 6th, 0.05 for the first, then eyeballing the gradual "increase"😂😂😂😂 My tech (an awesome luthier to boot) gives me a hard time about it every time, wondering how anybody can play with action that low. Luckily he has Plek'd them, so buzzing is not an issue. Laugh if you want to, but the tendonitis in my right hand cant handle anything more!
I didn't know there was a string height rule. I've heard local Dallas players say SRV's strings were incredibly heavy and so high other players could not play his guitar. I think part of the big tone thing is having to actually work hard to play the instrument. Monoprice distributes a lot of stuff and always one of the best bangs for the buck especially if you can setup one yourself. I think they actually have qualified musicians and technicians purchasing the items they sell. If you'll use eBay/Paypal they do immediate returns and replacements and no questions asked. No need to talk to Monoprice. Never had a problem returning Monoprice items on eBay. eBay holds the sellers feet to the fire until the buyer is satisfied.
That sunburst color rocks !
I ordered one, now I've cancelled having had the surprise of unboxing it myself wrenched away.
was yours that bad? this video is 3 years old wondering if those issues were fixed or addressed at the factory..
old player starting again cheat clarry guitar just found you lots of help given new suscriber nice work very informative keep it up brother BILL
Cute.
Im sure its a fine instrument. But the name is lackluster. Glarry, Grote, monoprice, Donner. With most if these budget brands being equal, right out of the box, you really need a name that grabs attention. I guess Donner not so plain.
Thing i noticed on these new cheaper guitars is, they like to leave the first fret high and the nut slots real high. I guess its ok because when you dont have the correct tools and try to use a piece if folded sandpaper to deepen the slots you don't have to worry too much about going too far, lol I had wanted to see what a 24" scale guitar felt like and im glad that i pulled the string on a 75 dollar Glarry mustang. Kinda scared to do a fret level as i have the super cheap tools, but really only the 11th fret was high.
I work on sixty to eighty guitars each month and I honestly haven't noticed much difference in percentage of high nut slots between cheap and expensive guitars. They all tend to have slots a bit (usually not very) high. Finding a high first fret is pretty rare, actually. For some reason, high frets tend to run between 7th and 21st (or 22nd, 24th, etc.) frets and the pricier the guitar, the more likely it will have high frets or at least some high fret ends. My book, "Level & Crown", on Amazon, is the poor man's guide to fretwork! Covers fret replacement, level & crown, tools and more.
@@GuitarsDoneRight oh wow, I just might have to check that out. I have screwed up lots of necks, lol But this time I did better than I ever have. I think in the past I was taking too much material off the tops, and had a hard time re crowning them. They say these cheaper guitars frets are very soft, so id definitely have to agree lol. I wonder what it's like with the stainless steel frets? I had thought if I ever did a re fret that id choose those.
Slow and meticulous setup. A bit boring but it's correct. Good presentation.
I'm from Mexico, and these are available from time to time on Amazon. I've had mine for about two years, bought it to see whether I liked TL style guitars or not, no regrets. I also got this vintage sunburst, but mine came with the old logo (the current one had already been in circulation for a while, so I'm guessing mine was left from the old stock). Only thing to fix on mine was the neck: dry fretboard and sharp fret ends. Other than that it was an easy setup and off to the races. Stock, the guitar was good as it was, but since I'm a tinkerer I've done a few mods just for fun. Seriously, it's a good instrument overall, would surely recommend as a backup guitar to anyone.
Why is made in Mexico consired quality? Most Asian companies are on the forefront of technology. How many cell phones/televisions / quality electronics are not Made in Mexico. This was Fenders attempt at outsourcing.
There are few, if any countries that are unable to build quality guitars. Factories that receive outsourced orders build whatever quality the specs call for. A guitar's electronics are rudimentary and don't compare to cellphones
hahaha! I laffed out loud when you were fixin' the strap button hole. you mentioned a "very specialised piece of hardwood" and then showed a TOOTHPICK! haha! I was expecting some exotic piece of african monkey wood painstakingly cut into a hole sized circle costing an exorbitant amount of money... and it was a toothpick.. haha!
Appreciate the video showing how to set up the guitar. I ordered one yesterday for $70. Also, you can return the guitar through their site itself. I have done it. If you are looking for the old fashioned on the phone customer service, then you won’t find it. I think they have automated most of their processes and that’s how they can offer these so cheap. They don’t do any discounts either. You either return or get a replacement.
Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it, that little toothpick trick for the stripped out screw was cool! and with the glue, im sure it will hold for a long time, just ordered my own indio monoprice telecaster , thanks for posting!!
Forgive me, I know this is an older video but I was wondering were the strings on this guitar.008s ?thanks
Nines
Very nice and informative
shorter screws
Yes, but if you don't have them, it's OK to cut them.
Thank You VERY much for this video, I loved the sound of mine (less than €80) out-of-the-box but I knew I'd have to fix it's issues - and you showed me how! Btw, no problem with english/metric scales...the way you explain everything is THAT great, everyone should undestand what you are doing, especially with the springs, this solved a problem I really was stuck with, I didn't dare to cut 'em. And you said something very important, everybody should look up their own issues with this guitar, on mine the nut was good, and I had to cut the E-string-spring only one and a half twist. Maybe I'll put some shield inside as some say it decreases the hum, but that is all I can add to what you did - THAK YOU!!!
Thanks for the kind words!
HE'S LOOKING & making Problems for the VIDEO
I get the Feeling He's way too Picky I've Got 2 G & L & they both play Beautifully Did the Action on One Slightly That.s ALL Been Playing 50 Years
No need to tension a truss on a new neck before setting up for the player, it depends on the strings they play. I've played the heaviest on down to 8s each set you got to adjust hight and distance on each saddle, since the nut is stationary. So the neck can trick you depending on the tension, there is no set rules on how you set up a guitar per se
Quite the contrary. There ARE set rules. Ensuring proper relief height via truss rod tension is first thing you do after tuning strings.
Intriguing choice of product name Placentia. I must recommend it for my next Grandchild or maybe not? ;-) Time to re-staff the marketing department, somebody should have spoken up.
Jeez has this guy got Alzheimer’s? It’s like he forgot what he did in episode 1. Also a new guitar shouldn’t need dremelling. It would be going straight back to the store.
You stripped out the bridge screws with your crappy electric screwdriver!
16:12 in part 1
Plus he also cranked the truss rod way down on the 1st video, lol
Tooth pick and wood glue world fine. Even used that trick on grand piano legs. Not with a tooth pick though. dowel rod.
For the price of that guitar is should have been set up aside of weather changing conditions.
Is this a Tribute or a USA model?
I'd like to add that after all this work, proper setup, etc. the guitar plays great! I just don't think the average guitar player would have been happy with it the way it came.
My bass my be innocent of not staying in tune, but I know with 100% certainty it's been drinking my beer and hitting on my partner when I'm not around...
G&L needs US manufacturing experts on the floor and CNC floor. Most companies do have 'em. Big difference in outcomes Leo and George wouldn't be happy. THANKS HANK!
3Years ago I bought a Glarry P bass for $78 free shipping and was very surprised how nice it was playability and quality because I was figuring on replacing the Electronics but it sounds Great the way it is and very Light for A Bass maybe Pine body not sure havnt bought any other guitars from them but for fair quality for a first time player or Intermediate player and very cheap Puzzles me even the tuners keep it in tune for months on a stand
Those saddles looked like a bad train wreck,I will watch part 1 and will subscribe ,I use Lip Balm as well cheers
Wisdom!!!
Placentia??? Lol.
Yeah I'm with you,who in the world said let's call it placenta. ?? That's the downfall right there.. yes different word, but what's the first thing you think of when hearing it... Pex
Anything above the 12th fret doesn't matter because even when people play that high, they play so fast that you can't tell what notes are being played anyway so it always sounds in tune
I've never had a new guitar arrive that far out of pitch.
Another example of why buying guitars that are made in China with inferior materials and parts and are thrown togeather by unskilled workers is not a good idea. The quality of this G&L was realy bad, i have worked on better samples from Harley Benton! they always need a full setup and upgrades to make them half decent. If i had bought that G&L it would have gone back. You don't always get what you pay for.
You get what you pay for.
Well, buy cheap, get cheap. If you can, spend the money to get high quality, the original Fender guitars cost roughly $2,000 in today's dollars. I have almost that much in a partscaster and it's worth every penny.
Even G&L can make some bad samples. If it had a Fender decal on the headstock i would not have been surprised, but this one seems a shoddy sample. We will have to wait for part 2 to see what else they got wrong.
Hi Allan! Surprise - Part 2 posted this morning
Longer screw perhaps?
That’s disappointing about the misfit. I’ve had an Indonesian G&L ASAT Tribute for about ten years now which has been wonderful after setup since new. The only thing I might want to change “one of these days” is the slightly murky neck humbucker, but haven’t so far usually being on bridge or bridge/neck. My Fenders Gibson PRS Rick and Dean usually all get to stay safe at home while the Tribute has some fun and earns some cash. It was so good I soon ended up with three Tributes, the third one needed some fret levelling.
G&L... that's quality.
I'm a bassist, and I played a G&L bass once and OMG, it was like buttah! Very, very smooth - I've wanted one since, but they can be quite expensive...
G&L Placentia series have really destroyed G&L's reputation. I hope their malaise doesn't transfer into the Tributes.
great video looking forward to the next one. Part two
Thanks Ernie! I just now posted it.
