Well, shave me with a cactus and call me 'Pinhead', I finally found a human gopher! Or possibly a marmot given this is Europe. Either way, this was a really interesting page in the encyclopedia of bizarre and bombastic. The inspiration for the badger in Wind in the Willows, you say? Heh, I'll have to remember that when I next watch the Disney film Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Out of curiosity, Mr. History, are his tunnels still around today? Or did Britain decide to close down his burrows of bewilderment?

From what I gather, his subterranean sanctuaries still snake beneath, though you might need to pack a pinch of patience and a spoonful of skepticism if you're plotting a personal pilgrimage. Our scholarly source (aka random Tripadviser comments) suggests these burrows of bewilderment remain off-limits for the average adventurer. For a twisty tale of tours, you might enjoy perusing this: www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g504076-d4758709-r414875006-Welbeck_Estate-Worksop_Nottinghamshire_England.html

😅 Did no one ask him why?

No records reveal his "why," but contemporary contemplation suggests he had a hefty dose of agoraphobia.
