    For my dry skin nighttime routine, I use a creamy cleanser, the BHA 2%, then Retin-a, and a thick petroleum cream on top to seal it all in, like Cerave healing ointment. My skin has never looked better! For those who think their skin can handle this routine, I really recommend it! 🤗

      🙂 Be careful it is pretty intense, and it is likely to cause purging. So don't worry, it will get better over time. If not, you can use it as a mask, and rinse it off after 5-15min. This works very well for my husband and me.

    Hi Melissa! I love your videos, they are extremely helpful and have helped me a lot! I had a quick question, If I am using the ordinary; Niacinamide, Coffee solution, and lactic acid, what order should I use these in?

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey 🙂
      I have a guide for this, but with the caffeine solution it may be a bit confusing.
      Lactic Acid = Exfoliant, Water Based Serum
      Niacinamide = Water-Based Serum
      Caffeine Solution = Water Based serum.
      The general rule of thumb for order of application is:
      1. Water-based serums
      2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations
      3. Lotions & Creams & suspensions
      Important:
      If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first). And it’s recommended applying eye-serums (such as Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG) first after cleansing.
      It’s recommended using no more than 3 serum formulations in a single routine for optimal skin penetration.
      About 2-3 drops of each serum and 1 pea-sized amount of creams should be enough for the full face and neck.
      Use a "patting" application method, as opposed to "rubbing."
      Always apply sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun!!
      So basically
      Caffeine Solution
      Lactic Acid
      Niacinamide
      But you have to test it and see what works best for you.
      Also I recommend the following videos for you:

      Yes, if the sunscreen is suitable for your skin, then the rest of the routine looks good. However, if you are new to Differin Gel, my advice would be not to use exfoliating acids during the first few weeks and give your skin time to adjust to it to avoid unnecessary skin irritation.

    I've always had kinda clear skin and my skincare routine was basically just washing my face using handsoap so i'm a skincare newbie here. I have dry/balanced skin, slight hyperpigmentation around my mouth area (kinda common with poc, i'm black) and those small little bumps which i later came to find out were comedones but they weren't too much they were skin coloured and hardly noticeable. So to fix those issues i finally started a proper skincare routine which consisted of:
    - cerave hydrating cleanser
    - ordinary lactic acid 10%
    - ordinary alpha arbutin 2%
    - cerave moisturizing cream
    I've been doing this at night-time for around a month now and although my hyperpigmentation got way better, the few comedones that i had increased alot and became more noticeable.
    Wanted your opinion on what could have caused this, how can i solve it and finally would paula's choice exfoliate be of any help. Plus if i was to get it how could i include it in my current routine and would i need to remove lactic acid from my routine to use it, would it be a better option for me than lactic acid?
    Sorry for the long comment and also wanted to let you know that i love your channel it's very helpful

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! :)
      If you squeeze those bumps, does anything come out? Are they painful?
      You could try PC BHA Gel or Lotion instead because you have a drier skin type, or look into a Retinol like PC 0,3% Retinol Treatment.
      And yes, you would replace it with Lactic Acid.

    • @anon88
      @anon88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MelissaVanDijkOfficial thank you so much for replying and no nothing comes out of them and they're not painful at all. Also do i have to completely remove lactic acid from my routine to use the PC BHA gel/lotion or could i maybe use them in like turns or something? because i'm not sure if it was the lactic acid or the alpha arbutin but my hyperpigmentation did get alot better and i'm afraid removing the lactic acid will also stop the improvements with the hyperpigmentation.

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      AM:
      - Cleanser
      - PC BHA
      - TO Niacinamide
      - CeraVe Hydrating Serum
      - CeraVe Eye Cream

      - TO Ascorbic Acid + Alpha Arbutin
      - CeraVe Hydrating Serum

      Generally, using BHA daily is for most people not an issue. But that's very individual; it depends on many factors such as your skin concerns, skin type, what else you are using, your age etc.
      I, for example, can use the BHA cleanser 2% daily. Sometimes, it gets too much, and I reduce the frequency of it, so I take a break for a few days and start again. I mainly target pimples, so it also depends on what you want to target. You need to adjust it, but it can work, yes.

I was using the Mario badescu glycolic acid but adding this 2% BHA product I might stop? Not sure. I also want to start using a serum? What do you recommend? I see u say not to use vitamin C. What about vitamin E? Thank you!!

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey :)
      I recommend looking for a hydrating and soothing toner without additional exfoliating acids in it. So far, I have mainly used Paula's Choice toners which I like a lot! I like her Enriched Calming Toner and Purely Natural Refreshing Toner. Those two feel great on my skin! :)
      Since it does not mention a % of your Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner, it is difficult to say how strong it is, but if you like to keep on using it, use it when not using your BHA, which could also be in the AM if that's fine for your skin! :) Don't forget your SPF when being exposed to the sun :)
      Well, you can use it with Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) if your skin can tolerate it. However, if you are new to it, I recommend not using them together since it may lead to stinging.
      You are fine to use your 2% BHA with other Vitamin C products that contain derivatives that aren't as 'harsh' on the skin as Ascorbic Acid :)
      You are fine to use it with a Vitamin E product.

      Since you have oily skin, I recommend using The Ordinary 2% Salicylic Acid Solution (the normal water-based one) or a Salicylic Acid Cleanser (like The Inkey List one). Or you could mix TO Lactic Acid (AHA - for dark spots) with TO Salicylic Acid (oily skin). I recommend Lactic Acid for the mixture because Glycolic Acid can be quite potent.

      It is with retinol, but it would be the same as your retinoid, and you can go with the 0,2% or 0,5%.

It would be my first time trying this product out or any kind of BHA. I do have a question tho, currently I use a toner and serum that's got propolis in it (I use the COSRX propolis line) is that safe to use alongside this BHA exfoliant? -- btw love your videos so much they're so informative and nicely explained ❤

      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! 😊
      Yes, that's fine.
      However, since you're new to a salicylic acid (BHA) product, you may want to try something gentler because PC BHA is potent. Either a salicylic acid cleanser or Paula's Choice offers a gentler formulation from their Clear Line (Regular Strength).

    • @Miirasha
      @Miirasha ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Oh okay! I had no idea they had a gentler version. I am still quite new to Paula's Choice's products and skincare line, I haven't tried them before but heard great things. I do struggle with acne prone skin and alot of people recommended me the BHA from PC, but it might be a better idea to try the more gentler version first like you said. Is there a specific product from the "Clear" line you'd recommend for someone that's got pores on the bigger side, and also who struggle with acne? Even tho I got acne my skin isn't too oily, more on the normal side tho dry during winter (if that helps). Also thank you so much for the quick reply! Paula's Choice has in general great skincare products but they are a bit pricy too🙈. Hi. First of all thanks for all the replies that you give for any of my questions. They are not only quick but also amazingly genuine. This makes me want to ask another one... :).... As I am experiencing new breakouts and post acne marks lately, I am thinking of incorporating paula's choice bha 2% into my routine. But I don't know if I should use this or the ordinary's azelaic acid? (I have combination skin and I have never used an acid before.)

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello again 🙂
      Hmm yes, you can incorporate it into your routine. However, it is very strong and tends to break people out even more in the beginning. I am only using it as a mask leave it on for 5-15minutes and rinse it off. My husband does this daily, and it works very well for him too.
      What I want to say it that you can try it, but if the breakouts are really coming from a product example Hyaluronic Acid it may be best to figure out the product that's causing it so that you don't have to buy other products to solve this problem ;) Just trying to help. You can of course just buy it, and test it 🤪
      Regarding Azelaic Acid I am not sure I have tested it recently and yes I wasn't impressed by it.

    Hi Melissa love your videos lots and I have been having trouble with putting together my skincare routine.
    Currently this is my skincare routine:
    AM: Inkey list Sa cleanser, hyaluronic acid, cereve moisturizer, sunscreen
    PM: Cetephil gentle cleanser, Paulas Choice BHA(three times a week), cereve moisturizer and the ordinary reship seed oil.
    I have been noticing still having blackheads and some skin texture and clogged pores so I am considering using Paula Choice BHA every night instead and possibly incorporating niacinimde either morning or night.
    Do you think that this is a good idea, should I use a gentle cleanser instead of SA cleanser in the morning and should I continue using reship oil every night?

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recommend changing the cleanser in the evening (and maybe morning, too) since the gentle cleanser is used for dry skin, so use Cetaphil Daily Facial cleanser. That should solve the issue.
      And for the Blackheads, it is best to extract them, as they are tough to remove with BHA if not impossible (if they are deep in the skin, you must use a tool). Personally, I think that The Inkey list SA cleanser works better than Paula's Choice BHA, so you can also try to skip the BHA in the evening and use the SA cleanser twice a day so that you do not need to buy additional stuff. 😉

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Nadira, well the serum already includes:
      BHA [SALICYLIC ACID 1.5%] deeply unclogs pores and prevents sebum accumulation
      [GLYCOLIC ACID 3.5%] activates skin renewal for improved skin radiance, with high efficacy on marks

    hi melissa! im really new to skincare and especially to paula's choice and the ordinary and i was wondering whether i could combine the ordinary argireline solution 10% with pc 2% bha liquid exfoliant, like maybe alternating days or am/pm.
    my skincare routine is simple: cerave foaming cleanser, pc 2% bha liquid exfoliant and then the ordinary natural moisturising factors + ha.
    does this routine make sense? i mostly deal with blackheads on my forehead and i would love to start incorporating some anti aging products like argireline. should i swap the exfoliant with the argireline in the mornings for example?

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Stargirl,
      Yes, you need to alternate with the BHA. But it's up to you how you do it; just don't use them immediately after another.
      And for the blackheads, I think it best to extract them and maintain them with a 2% Salicylic Acid cleanser (for example, La Roche Posay Micropeeling cleanser) that works best for me. But you can also try it with Paula's Choice 2% BHA.

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey :)
      The toner you use has not many ingredients listed, and Salicylic Acid is next to Citric Acid, which is usually is used to balance the product's pH.
      You may be able to use your toner and PC 2% BHA in the same routine, however, if you are new to it, I recommend using the toner in the AM and skip it in the PM. This way, you'll be able to see how your skin responds to it. Also, I recommend using the PC 2% BHA every other day, in the beginning, to see how it works for your skin before may be using it more often during the week. Or you can use the PC 2% BHA like a mask and apply it in the PM with a cotton pad, leave it on the skin for 5-10 min and rinse off, this way it is still very effective and you may be able to use it more often during the week :) And yes, if your skin can tolerate it, you can use Azelaic Acid in your PM routine as well! :)

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paula's Choice BHA and Retinol treatments are so far the most potent over-the-counter products that I have tried so far. So, I recommend being careful. Yes, it's a lower %, but I recommend keeping using them in separate routines and giving your skin enough time to adjust to both products individually before using them together.
      Retinol has a delayed response. Meaning, that if you apply your Retinol on Monday, you will see on Thursday or Friday how your skin tolerates it. So, if you are using your Retinol in the beginning too often, it can lead to excessive dryness and sensitivity.
      The same thing can happen with your BHA (it does not have a delayed response), but when using it too often or combined with Retinol, it really increases the risk of dryness and sensitivity.
      Therefore keep them in separate routines. Either use your BHA in the AM and Retinol in the PM or use both in the PM but alternate between.
