41 years old and beating the two world championship contenders to pole then winning the race after spending 2 years in heavier indycars (becoming champion). One of the all time great drivers.

Mansell should of won as many championships as Senna. He just had more bad luck. He was just as quick, if not, even quicker than Senna.

    • @RicardoSilva-qp4bb

@@posniknelb6114 Ayrton had more than double the pole number than Mansell. No way was Mansell quicker than Senna (to be fair no one was). All other things considered one can´t really compare (to many variables at stake), but concerning speed it was not even close. NO driver back then was as quick as Senna - in pure speed and natural talent - when driving those cars. And by a margin. His pole percentage back then (on "modern era cars") does not lie.

    • @paulsontag9233

The pole was impressive but to be fair his race pace was not. He won but not because of a strong performance.

Brilliant lap from Nigel - such skill and commitment even at 41 years old!
Was always a top qualifier. Even managed 8-8 against Prost in 1990 with the team openly prioritising Alain.

    • @Phantom5611
      @Phantom5611 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Prost was notorious for setting up his car for race conditions rather than qualifying. So its pretty bad that Mansell only managed 8-8 against Prost. Thats why Prost is often outqualified by Senna but he would have much better race pace.

    • @bymafia2606

Phantom5611 Senna dominated prost in qualifying because Prost knew it was a waste of energy trying to beat him in qualifying, he employed Lauda’s tactics that were used against himself in 84

Mansell should have won his first title in 1986, when Williams were by a mile superior to McLaren's. Instead of what he battled with his teammate. As a result Prost won, while Mansell & Piquet lost. Same in 1987, he had the car to win, but Piquet was still there. Anyway like him or not he was a very good driver, but lacked the ability or will to set up properly a car, you can't just hop in and drive. This is the key difference between title count, at some point you have to make one with the car. Should have retired in style after this race won, but messed it up totally.

Hill had less issues than Ayrton in that car. Seemed like a bad marriage from the start for Senna, he had problems with it, especially with the cockpit, size and position of the steering wheel.
In one of his earlier tests during pre-season he told reporters that the car was "undrivable". But the FW16 was quick and had lots of potential, it wasn't bad, just had to be fine tuned.

In 94 he done 4 races as a reminder, 2 DNF, France and Europe, 4th in Japan Therefore certainly not a good choice for 95, or championship contender. He should have won 86/87 titles hands down, Williams-Honda were unbeatable at times. And with a more reliable car 91 because the Williams were on top again.

@@TheUlysse2000 Mansell ruined many races too, and his 1987 title on his own by wanting pole in Japan and crashed, had to withdraw the two races left handing the title to Piquet. I agree he won in 1992, but that's his 1st and only title. As i said and i recon he was talented, he should have won 86/87/91. 88 Williams lost Honda engine to McLaren ( 15 wins/16 races ) the car was no match to others. 89/90 at Ferrari ? 89 soso, 90 well Prost simply walked over him, and was nearly titled in 90 ( Mansell did not help much as a teammate either watch Portugal ). Unlucky is and excuse for losers. He was certainly not the man to beat , these were McLarens Prost and Senna. I'm watching F1 since 1984, and if you ask any driver / commentator of these years, if Mansell was superior in any ways to any otherr, well they will just say NO. @Firstname Lastname Not true at all. They were all top drivers. Herbert was a huge talent in his early career. Didn't you follow F3000 at the time? He had his huge accident from which he never really recovered, unfortunately. Perhaps he was never quite the driver he could have been, but on occasion he was seriously quick. He never had the full backing of a team though and things never quite worked out.

@Firstname Lastname Mansell overrated? Hmmm... not sure about that. A guy from a Birmingham housing estate who had to re-mortgage his home to get, somehow, to F1, then is able to race on equal terms with Senna, Prost and co, and becomes world champion, then does the same in Indy cars. Overrated. Right... Run that one by me again. And you clearly don't seem to understand that some drivers just don't get the chances in F1. For example, do you really think that Brundle had a chance of getting the full support of the team, the upgrades and the best of everything, running alongside Schumacher? Of course not. Schumacher was a career destroyer. And Herbert was looked upon absolutely as a future world champion before his unfortunate accident. F1 is full of superb drivers who never quite got the chances - too many to mention but that's life

Mansell´s skill was better than Damon Hill. He has more than half a second on his foot against hill.
This is really amazing at his debue in the Formula. Hill has no chance against Mansell never.
Mansell against schumacher from the beginning in 1994 then it went around.
Hill is nothing against Schumacher, the fantastic Senna, the legend Mansell, the profesor Prost and the others.

Well in 1994 Hill out qualified Mansell 3-1, beat him races 2-1 in races and outscored him 22-13.
Mansell has no right being mentioned with the likes of Prost, Senna or Schumacher. Prost outscored Mansell 73-37 when they were team mates in 1990, meaning Mansell only scored 51% of Prost's points. In 1993 Damon Hill scored 70% of Prost's points (99-69) despite it being his first full season in the sport (after a half season in the dreadful 1992 Brabham).
Another point of comparison is Elio de Angelis, who was team mates with both Mansell and Senna. de Angelis outscored Mansell 76-38, whilst de Angelis actually got very close to Senna, with Senna only outscoring him 38-33.
      Prost/Senna > de Angelis > Rosberg/Piquet/Mansell

Yeah, but I think Mansell would have demanded a lot more than Hill and Coulthard would.. and also Mansell would have been a very expensive driver to keep. Therefore, I think Williams decided to keep Hill and Coulthard..

He proved he was better than Schumacher, Schumacher had to push his car beyond it's limits and crashed. he also crashed in the race and then deliberately drove into Damon Hill, taking them both out and handing the win to Nigel.

Williams was already faster than Benetton at this point. Newey already sorted their problem in mid season. It just Damon Hill was not a world class driver like Mansell and Schumacher.
