- More than six million people have visited the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art since it opened in 2011. Alice Walton's beautiful oasis for the best art the second-richest woman in the world could buy has transformed the once-sleepy town of Bentonville, Arkansas, into a thriving artists' community. Correspondent Martha Teichner reports.

We are lucky to have such a place here in Arkansas. Been there many times.
She has more money than you know... I find it so admirable that she brought this to Bentonville Ark. This is one way you bring the country together. The folks of Ark and those in the central part of the country are exposed to things usually only seen in NY LA DC Chicago Atlanta etc and hopefully their world is expanded. Conversely the visitors from around the US and the world get to see and interact with regular folks in the middle of America who are more like them than they think. Hard working people who appreciate and want a good life for their kids very much like the visitors want for their kids. Art can heal where politics divides. I guarantee, there is a parent in Ark who has been on a school field trip with their child and other children and has seen a spark in one of their eyes. One or more of those kids will say I want to paint like that sculpt like that and get so excited. With this museum and all its facilities those kids can see themselves doing art at home. Now there are kids going to Big 8 schools for athletic scholarships and excellence and some of their classmates going to Bentonville to study and observe art. Earn fellowships. Finding ways to tell the story of the central states through art. How FNG cool is that.
I grew up in Northwest Arkansas. Some of my family members were successful realtors here, I spent a semester in a grad degree class writing a thesis on housing prices in Bentonville and Fayetteville, so what I explain is respected enough to have academically peer reviewed analysis approve my gatherings. I doubt anyone would believe a comment buuut my grandfather actually dated Alice because Sam introduced them. I’m in my 30s so I remember the late 90s as a kid to now.
This area has changed for the better in multiplicities. It’s a really good place to raise a family as long as I have been aware. The poultry industry is HUGE here because of Tyson too.
What’s happening here with housing is honestly catastrophic though and people who have owned their homes for decades are beginning to be forced into selling under value because they can’t afford property taxes, or a developer will force their hand. The open secret is that you can move from Texas or California buy a “cheap” house and flip it because of the market here. That’s gone. Just to put it into perspective :
Median prices for 3 bed 2 bath homes in bentonville grew 220% in 14 years.
Again, this is for a 3 BEDROOM 2 BATHROOM ~1100+ sq ft home. The most commonly purchased type of home. For first time home buyers especially. It’s the house most people can change their financial situation with.
2010 bentonville Arkansas median price: 158k
January 2024: 508k
It’s getting worse, because rental units have also grown more than 200%, but renters here are poorer than 48 other states, and wages have barely changed too. Any supply that is built hits the market around 650k right now. People that have lived here even within the last 20 years are not able to afford that. When you make it unaffordable to the people who made the culture you exhibit as the draw you lose that culture. Her museum is a monument to that. Artists and the people who built the essence of this area’s culture are forgotten. It does not help that every city council member in the area was a realtor either.
Personally I am pretty sad what’s happened here, and the homeless or unhoused population has increased in really upsetting data. Someone could move here from Texas or California and get a 5 bedroom 3.5/4 bathroom house for 300k in 2010.
It’s been a crisis here for about 7-8 years and because most of the council members in every city here are realtors it will continue to degrade. To this day every answer you’ll see from officials is building _more_ expensive homes to trickle down pre existing homes to lower classes. Things are not corrupt here because that word would suggest there was effort to conceal the truth. It is very open and transparent that the people directly in control of fixing the crisis will do nothing, they will ensure they will have success with real estate outside of being in local politics, and nobody can stop them.
I visited Crystal Bridges and Bentonville Arkansas, from Vermont, in about 2013. Originally from Boston and used to art and culture, I was blown away, by the design of the museum, the flow of nature and the beautiful work. The town is lovely, too. Must see.
Brava Alice Walton ! You are a true philanthropist and the world thanks you whole heartedly for giving everyone access to your beautiful museum and all the beautiful art in it. I find it admirable that you are sharing your wealth with people who love art whether it be paintings, sculpture or architecture. The Crystal Bridges museum is something to surely be proud of. As someone who grew up in the South and moved away in adulthood, I’m overjoyed this museum is bringing much needed culture and inclusivity into those regions.

Colombia is a beautiful country. I used to visit family in Barranquilla every few years. I’ve also visited Santa Marta, Cartagena, and Bogota, and a few smaller towns. Wonderful people and beautiful women!

Perhaps, but I think the art was bought with what should have been higher salaries for Walmart employees.
And what about jobs shipped overseas so Alice could build her museum?
As an artist, I rather companies pay their frontline employees livable wages.
It is great that the museum has brought development. But it primarily draws hipsters and well-to-do people. The locals who have been there for a long time will be priced our eventually unless something is done to help them.
This is fascinating to me, because my maternal grandmother was from Benton County, Arkansas. She left with her father and siblings as a child, moving west, first to Indian Territory (Oklahoma), then the west coast, more than a hundred years ago. I’ve never been to Arkansas, but have thought of visiting the graves of my ancestors there (the Sawreys). I had no idea there was anything else to see in Benton County.
And Thorncrown Chapel is in the next county.
It’s really booming now. I live and grew up in Fayetteville and the population in NWA is growing rapidly. Throwncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs is about an hour drive from Bentonville. Eureka Springs has its own charm as well.
The “average” American can’t afford to live here. The house prices are out of this world.
I loved the Crystal Bridges Museum. I was there in August 2021. I stayed in Fayetteville. totally worth the drive. I ended up spending 2hours there. The Frank Lloyd Wright Bachman-Wilson House is a must-see
Went there back in 2017 or 2018 and it is so incredibly beautiful. Definitely worth going to!
This artist and her displays of art work is truly gratifying and amazing! Giving access to others who don't is deeply appreciated. Thanks to her, this art work fills me with a deep feeling of belonging to the creation and development of humanity and mindfulness.
I love that it is free to visit. The museums in my area have become so expensive - although some do participate in a library pass program. I’d like to visit Crystal Bridges.
The museum is stunning and on its ground, you can tour The Bachman- Wilson House built by the famous architec Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Crystal Bridges Museum is beautiful and its holdings are vast. I've been to the Whitney and The Met and Philadelphia Museum and several others across the Nation. That museum is a peer.
I made a special trip to this museum a few years ago and I was one of the best experiences of my life. Thank you Alice.
We live 1&1/2 hours from Bentonville.
It is a beautiful area and Crystal Bridges is a world class museum. Definitely a must see.
Alot of construction going on right now so it's a bit of a mess as far as parking and access.
No pain no gain.
The new gallery of 100,000 sq ft will be worth it.
I will say I'm afraid the growth explosion in the area is destroying that small town feel.

Crystal Bridges wanted desperately wanted to acquire the painting "The Gross Clinic" by Thomas Eakins - offering something like $68,000,000 for it. Scholars considered it the finest 19th Century American painting. The city of Philadelphia wouldn't permit the painting to leave their city and outbid them. It was a triumph of civic pride over private wealth.
Crystal Bridges is currently the envy of the museum world and this video shows why. I am just curious what the economic impact will be like on the locals going forward as more wealthy people move in and in turn gentrify and increase the cost of living there.

It’s adding jobs and creating attraction which helps local restaurants and bars for one. It’s even holding a music and arts festival at the end of the Summer. Walmart home offices are in Bentonville so a lot of people move there to work even before the museum opened.
I moved to Bentonville in 2017. My home has definitely appreciated, but there still are affordable homes to buy if you live on the edges of town in places like Highfill, Centerton, or even some parts of Rogers. They are making a concerted effort to build more for density to help keep some stuff affordable now.

This museum and the Waltons tried to steal a painting that should never, ever leave Philadelphia, The Gross Clinic, by Thomas Eakins. Philadelphians made sure that they didn't get it.

While that's lovely, as is any public work done by the incomprehensibly wealthy, what one of, if not the, richest families in the world should be doing, is raising the quality of life for people by paying them at least a minimum wage adjusted for inflation. That art was bought by keeping employees on food stamps, and nothing they buy or give away now can change that. And that's just in America. The employees that make the products they sell in Asia are a whole other level of repulsive.

everyone has an opinion and i am stuck in the middle i agree that a fair wage go to employees and fair medical and dental healthcare and pensions to help weather near end of.life on earth. and i will admit that i have the correct solution to this problem.
i am hoping mrs walton has some spare money to buy the washington crossing the delaware painting that was removed from the white house and is going up for auctjon soon estimated price is about $10 million. some news service and may even this platform of news

Exactly! If you work for Walmart, unless you live close to Bentonville, you probably can’t afford the gas to drive there. Seriously, she’s the second richest woman in the world. Her stores should pay a living wage.
There was public art, there were fancy restaurants here in Bentonville, there were/ are festivals. You are overplaying the importance of crystal bridges to the local scene

My thoughts exactly! Or lower their prices so lower income people can afford to shop there! I boycott Walmart but recently took a lady who was down on her to Walmart to get her supplies. I was shocked at the prices!! I remember when Walmart prices were cheap!!!!
it's much worse than that. The entire town is run by the Waltons and they have cut delivery drivers wages by 50% . Look up the Glass Door reviews to see the truth about this place.

Are you serious? This is one big tax shelter for the Waltons. Go pay your taxes and stop using public funds / ngo to do "good." We don't need your art. We need to stop paying millions to subsidize your workers because you refuse to offer standard benefits. Everytime a Walmart open, Main street dies, and the locals are stuck paying the bill. Read about it. This pet project of their family is absolutely offensive.
The Walton family is the wealthiest family in the United States. Because Walmart workers are paid so little, they on are Welfare and Medicaid, so essentially the Waltons are passing their costs onto taxpayers like you and me. I don't think "generous" is the right word to describe the Waltons
@@shockwave208 I see your point. Coming as I do from a middle-class background, I do not identify with people who have billions of dollars to play with. The Waltons are definitely in that upper stratum. But I will say this: Alice pumped lots of money into her cultural project that she might otherwise have spent on personal items: bigger yachts, more vacation houses, private planes, haute couture, etc. In that sense she is sharing her wealth. At the same time I also think that Wal Mart employees deserve to make a living wage commensurate with what they do.

One day, I will travel to Bentonville, Arkansas just to see and visit this museum.
It seems that this week’s show is a giant handy to the Walton crime family. Alice and her siblings should be imprisoned for their crimes against humanity, the abuse of their workers, and the disgusting abuse of the few federal social programs that exist. Giving them any sort of humanizing coverage is a crime in and of itself.
What an amazing Intelligent Warrior Goddess and Visionary Catalyst! Compassion, transparency, integrity and accountability for all!
I love the gift of this museum. Does it offer free art classes for children through adults? Too many of these programs are cut due to the obscene amount of money put into sports.
Tish W, I live in Northwest Arkansas and have visited the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art several times. I have been very impressed on the great access that the museum offers the youth. Every time I attend, there are multiple tours from many schools in the area. Dedicated guides will spend time talking to the class and discussing the paintings and art they are viewing. There is a complete section for the kids and families to work on art projects. And, Yes, they have programs that teach the children about art and creativity.

All of the people here are bashing this museum and the Waltons from the faraway East and West coasts... Do they also bash the MET, MoMa, or the Guggenheim? Same story/different families/bigger cities. All of the art in NYC was acquired and amassed under the same circumstances as Crystal Bridges.. Oh, but it's just fashionable right right now to bash this because it's vulgar Walmart and located in (gasp) Arkansas!! Hypocrites!

The War Eagle Arts and Crafts Fair which began at the War Eagle Mills Farm back in 1954 by Blanche and Lester Elliot goes against what Miss Wally World said. To say there was no arts and culture tourism sector in that region is a flat out LIE. The War Eagle Arts and Crafts Fair is a huge open air market for artists to show and sell their arts and crafts. This arts and crafts fair brings in artists from all over the world. You will find everything and anything imaginable at the War Eagle Arts and Crafts Fair. This event is held in the fall and attracts people from everywhere. When this event takes place it pretty much encompasses Rogers AND BENTONVILLE Arkansas along with it. So NO! Miss Wally World is not some savior to the little people of that region when it comes to art or even crafts tourism for that matter. For her to act like she has brought cultural tourism to the little people of that region rankles me greatly. I also resent Sunday Morning not doing its due diligence before posing this question to Miss Wally World. You should have fact checked this before asking such a question.
As for Miss Wally World, I have zero respect for her or any of her siblings. I was a Walmart employee while Sam Walton was still alive and at his passing. Within a months time of Sam Waltons passing his children began making changes to how the company treated its employees. While Sam Walton was alive Walmart was a great and fine company to work for. Once he passed it was nothing but cut backs, cut backs, cut backs, all to the detriment of it’s hourly workers. So NO!!! She is not some cultural savior to the little masses of that region. Shame on you Sunday Morning. I expect better of you than this. Im willing to bet Crystal Bridges has a much higher attendance rate during the War Eagle Arts and Crafts Fair than any other time of the year. If anybody should receive credit for bringing art and cultural tourism to that area it should be Blanche and Lester Elliot. What THEY STARTED helped to not only revive arts and crafts that were almost lost but it has kept them alive. To say I’m very disappointed in this piece is a huge understatement.

It's kind of a disappointing museum when you've seen some of the bigger nicer ones around the country.
The truth is you live in a cultural wasteland where the only “culture” were civil war re-enactment’s. Seriously, be glad you have this museum.
Almost all of the bigger, nicer ones charge an entrance fee to visit. This one is FREE.
