It's been intentional. The real problem and cause is how many AMERICAN CITIZENS that simply do not care about serious things. This is a major issue in Europe, where they vote for it to be guarded, and they create the GDPR to defend its citizens. Americans have no idea, because they're too busy figuring out other basic things in 2023.

I recently sold my 1969 Chevelle wagon. Before that, my '68 Camaro, before it was stolen i was running into problems finding parts. The power steering bracket was impossible to find. New or used. My uncle ended up welding one for me from scratch. I was so mad when the thief ended up with my hard to get part. But then again, they probably put on headers, which would have eliminated the power steering, which breaks my heart even more thinking that bracket ended up in a trash heap.
Sorry i went off topic. All this talk of old cars, i do miss them terribly, ...the sound, the feel, the simplicity, the smell,( lol). but i don't miss the long braking distance.

This is such an important privacy topic today and needs to be talked about! The general population, I believe, is so obsessed with "apps" because they provide that instant gratification due to the sense of control, power and to some extent, importance (because they're doing something or making something happen). The natural extension of the "app" is to what we do everyday; drive. I've often told people, I don't want to drive a laptop or a phone and have never connected one to any vehicle I've owned. Integrated head or infotainment units get replaced and antennas get disconnected (hard wired music is all I need) and I'll use stand alone (unregistered) GPS units (only if I don't know where I'm going). Even these steps likely don't stop all tracking but it's a start...Thanks Naomi; you've got one of the best channels on YT!

I had a 2020 Grand Cherokee stolen from in front of my home 2 years ago. With all this terrific tracking and data collection technology, you’d think that the vehicle could be located. I logged into my “Guardian” tracker within 20 minutes of its disappearance and it had already been disabled. The police absolutely did nothing, not even coming over at all. The insurance company mailed a me check and I mailed back both key fobs and title. It’s unbelievable that a 3 ton vehicle can evaporate like a fart in the wind, never to be seen again. I firmly believe that there are people somewhere on this planet aside from the thieves, who know exactly where that Jeep is and who now possesses it, whether it’s in North America or Africa, including camera feeds.

I'm assuming that your stolen Jeep had push button start??? Anything with that feature is easy to steal. We have a Jeep Cherokee and we've never had it get stolen. My advice is to cover up the VIN code in the driver's side window in the dashboard. Also cover up the one in the driver's door. We cover both VIN numbers with cardboard and have never had a problem. Thieves can literally generate a throw away fob to disable the security system with nothing more than the car's VIn numbers. It takes about 5 minutes to do it, especially when the vehicle has push button start feature.

I just purchase a new vehicle with all the bells and whistles for my wife and this video makes me not even want to get anywhere near it.😮

Don't connect your phone or use any of the apps available for it.
A friend who's an FBI agent told me that. Don't use on star, etc.
There's really no reason to have all those things anyway. It's not like you're ever far from a city or people, unless you drive to Vegas... Wait, yeah, even then you're never far from any place.
Why do we need on star?
It still won't stop a car jacker, or alert you that someone is following you. Those things will depend on his old fashioned common sense and keeping aware. Nothing is fool proof, but staying alert is key to most situations.
In my opinion, all those extra doodads can reduce your awareness to your surroundings since you're relying on that crap to keep you safe.
      I'm just saying.

There is an object in all vehicles dating back to 90s maybe earlier known as the black box. It collects data just before an accident. Speed g forces when brakes are applied if at all lights when the airbags deploy when the car finally comes to a stop etc. whenever the Insurance adjuster looks at the vehicle for damage. They also collect the data from the black box.

    • @WhiteWolfos
      @WhiteWolfos 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@wrenchaholic_ the black box is the least of your worries because it is pulled for investigations only during an accident, defect etc. Some manufacturers don't let insurance companies have it even like with Tesla.
Really it is passive collection like OnStar, app services, phone services etc that is more concerning. Atleast with a phone you have more control where the device let's you disable permissions but it is usually not the case with the car. Imo, I like to use a spare phone or preloaded USB for music. You can also install a tablet center console to your car which you can then control permissions on Android. Ofc it is more work than the standard equipment and in the future at 2026 the cars are required to have remote kill switches, so it might even be illegal if you take out the center console and it messes with the switch.

Most of these are theoretical issues. Most cars are not recording your audio or sending you data to the cloud. The amount of wireless data involved would be prohibitively expensive. Also, the moment you buy a car, the car companies already know pretty much everything about you, like your address, where you work, your income, etc. There's not much incentive to spend lots of money to track you going to work, the grocery store, movies, etc. Aside from legal issues, most of the data will be not useful from a marketing perspective.

The driver was almost cleared of the charges, that is until an officer investigating the crash learned about the cars "black box" which set the precedent in investigations moving forward. This "black box" contained just enough data to prove that he was speeding right before the crash.... The crazy thing is this "black box" was meant to be a diagnostic tool for the airbag system. All cars have this "black box" nowadays, if it has airbags, ABS, stability control, or any driver aid, telemetry data is collected, and stored in those little computers in various places inside of the car

As for connecting your phone to a rental car or van, don't do it, it's a very bad thing as they download a copy of all your contacts off your phone onto the vehicle.
I had 6 rentals through my work and 3 had multiple people's contact details stored on the inboard computer, one had too many so I had to delete all of them in the end due to the constant error messages popping up everytime I started the van.
Also use a faraday holder for your keyfob, so easy to steal the connection between the key and car, in a matter of seconds a car can be stolen.

While I'm sensitive to personal data issues (I'm here, for once) a killing feature of connecting your car to your phone (the car's app on it) is that you can have info on its position. A very little thing, I know. Plus other features, but this is for me one the most important. There is no auto sales contract which explicitly gives dealers consent to listen to private speech or conversations, so if they do so, they are violating law. California is a “two-party consent” state, meaning that it is illegal to record a conversation without the consent of all parties involved. So if you want to record a conversation in California, you must inform all parties involved in the conversation and receive their consent before recording. The buyer may well have to agree with the privacy policy or the unit will not function as it has to be constantly listening to operate. Most of the companies running those trackers sell the data to police in the UK, it feeds in to their ANPR system to boost the number of vehicles shown and accuracy. There are also SIDE FACING CAMERAS on posts in North Wales and Chester, UK, the police gather data from ANPR and then cameras to look through the side windows of vehicles - which is one reason the Law stops you tinting them too much. They cross reference this side picture with the front one and run it through PNC to see if a person is wanted.
If not, they record it all. There is one massive Palantir type Database that stores all info from ANPR, side cameras, speed cameras (that were also used for 24hr surveillance filming and ANPR), roadside bluetooth and WiFi beacon monitors etc. This is also cross referenced with phone info, IMEI and IMSI, subscriber details, financial databases showing bank details, passport usage - absolutely everything about people. Then you get contact chaining to work out who knows who with a Maltego type approach. It will show which criminals have been together, who was on the same road etc.
Then the tagging database, the base units G4S fit in homes have monitored not only the tag of the criminal it was intended for, but every other tag in the vicinity, working out who knows who, who was nearby etc.
There is a lot people do not know. Make sure you put your VirginMedia box in a cupboard as a lot had cameras inside to enable police to watch you in your own home.
      NOTHING you do is private...

These days, we have absolutely no privacy when we have a cellphone. These phones literally collect our private data every time we use them. I'm actually considering getting rid of mine. And my vehicle is 15 years old and has no screen in the dash for calling. But it does have ON STAR. I have not ever had it activated but every once in a while, it will speak to me. And tell me that something is wrong here

I hate driving down the road and the person next to me, you can hear both ends of their phone conversation from their speakers. Pretty sure there is a privacy setting where they can change that. Either they want everyone to know their private life, or they are too unaware to know. Either way, its kinda frustrating to me.

I do connect a device to my 22 car for music, but that device is a 7th Gen iPod Touch that I mostly use for listening to MP3s that are not on a streaming service. I also have been doing my shorter trips via ebike that cannot track me. As Louis Rossmann states: "You're not paranoid if they're after you."

Many modern vehicles have an integrated GPS + 4G/5G modem module that provides navigation & other in vehicle connectivity services. All that I have encountered use a SIM card that's soldered on the PCB of the modem module, so you won't be able to easily remove it to protect your privacy. I know too much, yet not enough about this... as only those on the inside know exactly what data is being collected by each carmaker!

The problem is that removing the SIM or disconnecting the modem may flash a service error in the car and it could be programmed to shutdown if not repaired in a given time.
