Agree with both of you. Sammo Hung’s dedication shines in this direction. Benny’s a BEAST to have the skill and ability to fight on par with Jackie’s stunt crew.
@@Vyselink This. Donnie Yen low-key threw Louis Koo under the bus by basically saying that he choreographs fights based on the skill of the actor. So the fight that Koo got in Flashpoint was indicative of his skill (which was nil), so the fight was basically nothing.
@@billywashere6965 Sammo and Jackie watched Benny becoming the champion at that time. They wanted to cast him immediatly after that since they know he was good. And it was easier to choreograph this fight with him rather than casting a random actor. Also they could go full contanct since both Benny and Jackie were used to get hit and kicked. Of course Jackie was more of an athletic gymnast and Benny was a professional competitive fighter, they kinda settled for the inbetween and leaving Jackie doing the more gymnastic movements while Benny going for the more straightforward fighting movements.
What’s great about this scene, and a lot of Jackie Chan fight scenes in particular is that they balance being brutal fights with insane choreography with some genuinely funny moments like the table being pushed while they fight and the little touches like Benny slapping his suspenders. Really well done stuff
Urquidez obviously had some crazy great fighting moves, but I also really liked his acting in this. Over the top sure, but it's a Jackie Chan film. Some of his eye, I'm sizing you up stuff, was just perfect Jackie film villain acting. Anyway one of the great movie fight scenes, and a great break down of it from a martial arts perspective!
@@BurridgeMartialArts604 Scott interviewed Cynthia Rothrock then she interviewed him in back-to-back podcasts, lots of topics were discussed including the differences between Hong Kong and Hollywood editing techniques and how different stunts were done. Stuntmen on Cynthia's movies were sometimes seriously injured and a few of her fight scenes include the injury in the final cut rather than do another take. Hollywood actors and stuntmen were scared of her because she was taught to really hit and kick her opponent and she was mentored by Sammo Hung.

Sammo Hung really knew how to make on-screen fighters look their very best. That, coupled with the genuine skills of Jackie and Benny, make this fight an absolute belter!

When it comes to Jackie Chan’s opponents in movies, I always think of Urquidez as his biggest rival. The Jet is in two of Jackie’s best fight scenes ever, and they have amazing chemistry both on screen and behind the scene. Also, kudos to him for keeping up with Jackie’s expectations since Jackie expects nothing less than perfection when it comes to fight choreography.
Benny’s choreography was unique by the fact that he came up with his own ideas. He said in many interviews that Jackie and his stunt team would choreograph a scene and would then ask Benny what he would do. Benny would then choreograph what he was going to do in response. They worked the choreography like that brilliantly. Other films, Jackie would make the choreography and have the other actors follow it. Benny was more or less the sole exception.

And its clear with how much he enjoyed working with Jackie Chan and the respect they have for each other that they not only worked together again, but also that Benny would go on to be in film as a choreographer, trainer, stunts, etc.
@@agiammarco94 I would say yes. They only did two films together, but they were honestly the best fights in Jackie’s whole filmography catalogue IMO. The other person that Jackie has expressed how comfortable he was working with another martial artist was Jet Li.
Love this scene, and the film. Benny said that he did actually blow the candles out with a kick, but for the final scene they did it for him, as his leg was starting to strain from doing it. I can imagine the back of the knee getting saw from the throw of the spinning hook kick. He also said Jackie was going all out with the hits too. Two legends.
Yes, they both did full contact fight. According to Benny, Jackie told him to actual kick him and don’t hold back. This is how you know Jackie could actually fight and not sone fake action star.

Same reason why the duel between Anakin and Kenobi on Revenge of The Sith is so good, they were hitting and blocking for real (with plastic sticks obviously) and both actors said that sometimes the hit each other.

Has anyone really managed to pull off the same style as Benny after him? The speed, aggression, crispness and constantly forward? He seems like such a unique man in the muriad of ways that he were able to do things that other's can't get close to.
It hurts of some kind when I watch this movie. I was 12 years old and I loved always the fairness in the fight. The fights were different, yeah they beat each other, but there is a point where one has to give up and the other respected that. But today fights are soooo extreme doggedly and most time deadly and it feels like everything is allowed, just kick your opponent even he is on the floor. Defeat the other, shit on fairness. I hope someday they would be again an actor who wants fights they are great, but are fair and leaves at the end a good feeling. No killing, yeah some kind of hate because is a fight, but at a point, you feel the respect and no killing intention anymore.
Watch the movie "Heroes of the East" - a Chinese guy marries a Japanese girl & both are martial artists. They butt heads over which country's styles are best(naturally lol). The wife gets pissed & goes back to Japan, so the guy sends his wife a 'challenge', which gets intercepted by her various sensei who take it as a formal challenge of the Japanese arts!! So it's a huge/awesome comparison of styles as her husband must battle her instructors - and NO ONE gets killed!
Well obviously they’re going to kick on the ground, are they fighting for honorable reasons, or are they fighting to survive? If you’re fighting for your life, you’re not going to just stand around and wait for your opponent, that’s dumb.

The choreography in this movie was superior to the choreography in that fight, regardless if Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris were considered better martial artists than Jackie.
@@theryumancer9639 the choreography is yes superior but what he is saying is the moves doesn't look like those common fight scene that looks like dancing. Here they do look like dancing but its good cause they didn't use flashy moves.instead they made the simple practical moves into flashy.and the timing of the fight.it wasn't continues. they pause, change stance,do fakes and try their opponents reaction.i think that's what he's saying that's similar.its choreograph but it's still has some realism.
This is my favorite fight scene I think of all time. It's maybe not quite the best from a martial arts standpoint, but it has so many internal narratives and some humor, while still being technically amazing. My favorite is how, even after his "revelation" moment, Jackie still gets cocky a few times and pays for it (@5:30 is a great example). That's very Jackie. Most other leads don't do that, but it helps keep the tension as well as evolve the character.

I was going to make this suggestion as well! That is the movie that introduced me to Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Wah, and that was in the early 90's when finding that stuff wasn't easy unless you lived in a bigger city with a kind of fringe video shop in it.
Jackie trained Southpaw because it was an uncommon stance, he is right handed as he mentioned in an Interview for Forbidden Kingdom. And yes, that is one of the best fight scenes ever.
I love Benny and Jacky fighting movies grew up watching them same time was training full contact kickboxing and yeah the fist on the candle I did it too coz it was cool😎
benny did many interviews about this, i think he said they worked on this specific scene for like 2 months. Also he said they took a lot of his cues for the fight, like they kept asking him, what would you do in this situation, and benny would tell them and then they would set it up. So they would set it up on the fly, and then work on putting it together take after take. Benny also said they hit each other a lot of times, like they would make contact a lot, at one point benny kicked jackie chan in the chest really hard with that spinning back kick and jackie went flying, which is not disrespect to jackie chan, i mean benny outweighs him, and he's a bit taller, anybody would've went flying after taking one of his kicks.
Apparently, Keith Vitali also sent Jackie flying from a side kick in an earlier scene. That's why his fight scene with Yuen Biao ended with him getting a (very real) ceramic pot smashed over his head. As he'd screwed up a couple of times and really whacked both Jackie and Sammo with very real kicks. He knew it was coming, took it like a champ and they all respected him for it.
One of the greatest fight scenes of all time. There is a dialogue missing in that scene when Jackie Chan lift his knee in that delayed kick and Benny Urquidez does the same, Jackie in the original cantonese version says "not yet".
A lot of Chinese Martial Arts train to fight both Orthodox and Southpaw, Bruce Lee was the same way, mainly leading in Southpaw to keep the faster and stronger hand forward and cutting the distance to the target while also throwing the timing off most Orthodox fighters.

Apparently Benny Urquidez managed to really pull off blowing out the candles with his kick but he was doing it so many times, I think he had pulled something in his leg so he had to tell the Director He couldn't do it again so they managed to find a way to do it for him at the precise second.

By the time Jackie Chan came along, cinematography and choreography were both perfected. So while Bruce Lee could beat Chan in a real fight, Chan's movies usually had much better and smoother choreography, hence the fights in the movies looked better.

Look carefully & you'll notice small edit flaws in the flow of this sequence; it's so well re-combined you barely realise that Benny & Jackie, performed this several times over. ' FULL & pt LENGTH ', each time. Think 🕯️'John Saxon', 🙏informed us at 'Rose Theatre' 🇬🇧, re: researching b4 'CoV' released, that duration of filmed fighting exceeded 3hours. Bruce, wouldn't have put that sort of endurance strain upon his body , yet still did numerous (shorter) re-takes, mostly due issues with equipment.

I have actually tickled someone before to get out of something in a fight before and it can be surprising effective. I've also put my hand into a nakadaka fist before and pressed and rubbed in a circular motion with the extended knuckle really hard into a area by the arm pit that has a lot of nerves and it's really, really painful when done right and can be effective in getting someone to loosen a grip or let go. If your creative enough you can do a lot of things that people wouldn't expect.

2:40 Jackie Chan specialized in boxing when he started as a stuntman for Bruce Lee. So I believe he is ambidextrous. Southpaw? Yes. As a kid looking at the camera angles and the choreography, I assumed that he always switched between right and left handed stances to capture the best of the choreography between him and the fellow actors he was fighting against.
Well, I'm glad to hear tickling is banned in jujitsu. I would hate to join a competition and just lose because I was tickled. Even worse, I'm an "elf giggler". I'd feel extra weird losing that round.
not necessarily young cause he was 30 at the time, which was retirement age for competitive fighters back then (nowadays, 30 can be prime age for certain fighters, but Jackie is just crazy doing stunts until his 40s). At 30, u can expect Jackie to have incurred numerous injuries already on top of that.

Arguably the Greatest 1vs1 fight scene unmatched up to now this is really close to perfection,you started the fight a bit late off the start but u got most of it this version does not have the original music though that i think is cooler.
I tried so hard to find a version that had the whole scene but I could only find them in really low quality unfortunately. I did watch it on my own but thought the low quality wouldn't do so well for the video

i prefer the final showdown in Dragons Forever, but the movie overall is a bit dull

Here they do look like dancing but its good cause they didn't use flashy moves.instead they made the simple practical moves into flashy.and the timing of the fight.it wasn't continues. they pause, change stance,do fakes and try their opponents reaction.i think that's what he's saying that's similar.its choreograph but it's still has some realism.

This is my favorite fight scene I think of all time. It's maybe not quite the best from a martial arts standpoint, but it has so many internal narratives and some humor, while still being technically amazing. My favorite is how, even after his "revelation" moment, Jackie still gets cocky a few times and pays for it (@5:30 is a great example). That's very Jackie. Most other leads don't do that, but it helps keep the tension as well as evolve the character.
The Jet is INCREDIBLY underrated as a true martial artist. Every film I saw him in he's been bad but I found myself almost rooting for him lol.

I was going to make this suggestion as well! That is the movie that introduced me to Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Wah, and that was in the early 90's when finding that stuff wasn't easy unless you lived in a bigger city with a kind of fringe video shop in it.

Jackie trained Southpaw because it was an uncommon stance, he is right handed as he mentioned in an Interview for Forbidden Kingdom. And yes, that is one of the best fight scenes ever.

I love Benny and Jacky fighting movies grew up watching them same time was training full contact kickboxing and yeah the fist on the candle I did it too coz it was cool😎
benny did many interviews about this, i think he said they worked on this specific scene for like 2 months. Also he said they took a lot of his cues for the fight, like they kept asking him, what would you do in this situation, and benny would tell them and then they would set it up. So they would set it up on the fly, and then work on putting it together take after take. Benny also said they hit each other a lot of times, like they would make contact a lot, at one point benny kicked jackie chan in the chest really hard with that spinning back kick and jackie went flying, which is not disrespect to jackie chan, i mean benny outweighs him, and he's a bit taller, anybody would've went flying after taking one of his kicks.
Apparently, Keith Vitali also sent Jackie flying from a side kick in an earlier scene. That's why his fight scene with Yuen Biao ended with him getting a (very real) ceramic pot smashed over his head. As he'd screwed up a couple of times and really whacked both Jackie and Sammo with very real kicks. He knew it was coming, took it like a champ and they all respected him for it.
One of the greatest fight scenes of all time. There is a dialogue missing in that scene when Jackie Chan lift his knee in that delayed kick and Benny Urquidez does the same, Jackie in the original cantonese version says "not yet".

A lot of Chinese Martial Arts train to fight both Orthodox and Southpaw, Bruce Lee was the same way, mainly leading in Southpaw to keep the faster and stronger hand forward and cutting the distance to the target while also throwing the timing off most Orthodox fighters.

I think he said he did it the first go, but almost blew something in his hip and leg. I guess he really put some umph in that kick.
You should do the wind tunnel fight from Operation Condor 2, that movie was full of killer scenes.

Apparently Benny Urquidez managed to really pull off blowing out the candles with his kick but he was doing it so many times, I think he had pulled something in his leg so he had to tell the Director He couldn't do it again so they managed to find a way to do it for him at the precise second.

It's hard to look tough in suspenders and a bowtie but, as Benny Urquidez proves, not impossible.
When I heard the stories about Benny The Jet, it peaked my interest to practice Martial Arts and hope to one day meet the legendary Kickboxer.
So many similarities with this and Way of the Dragon… getting beat to start and then relaxing and flowing better to eventually win. Love this fight!!

Bruce Lee was the superior martial artist.
But the choreography and camera placement in his movies were awkward.
By the time Jackie Chan came along, cinematography and choreography were both perfected.
So while Bruce Lee could beat Chan in a real fight, Chan's movies usually had much better and smoother choreography, hence the fights in the movies looked better.

Bruce :- took different emphasis., Multiple style, with emphasis functional combat flowing btw styles.
It's a very subtle difference.
Bruce : had to physically instruct, many cameramen, to focus upon poV that ensured quality 'takes', with less switch/cut editting.
Look carefully & you'll notice small edit flaws in the flow of this sequence; it's so well re-combined you barely realise that Benny & Jackie, performed this several times over. ' FULL & pt LENGTH ', each time.
Think 🕯️'John Saxon', 🙏informed us at 'Rose Theatre' 🇬🇧, re: researching b4 'CoV' released, that duration of filmed fighting exceeded 3hours.
Bruce, wouldn't have put that sort of endurance strain upon his body , yet still did numerous (shorter) re-takes, mostly due issues with equipment.
Final fight scene of Drunken Master 2 is competition for this I believe.

I have actually tickled someone before to get out of something in a fight before and it can be surprising effective.
I've also put my hand into a nakadaka fist before and pressed and rubbed in a circular motion with the extended knuckle really hard into a area by the arm pit that has a lot of nerves and it's really, really painful when done right and can be effective in getting someone to loosen a grip or let go.
If your creative enough you can do a lot of things that people wouldn't expect.

not necessarily young cause he was 30 at the time, which was retirement age for competitive fighters back then (nowadays, 30 can be prime age for certain fighters, but Jackie is just crazy doing stunts until his 40s). At 30, u can expect Jackie to have incurred numerous injuries already on top of that.

Arguably the Greatest 1vs1 fight scene unmatched up to now this is really close to perfection,you started the fight a bit late off the start but u got most of it this version does not have the original music though that i think is cooler.
I tried so hard to find a version that had the whole scene but I could only find them in really low quality unfortunately. I did watch it on my own but thought the low quality wouldn't do so well for the video
