Thanks for this. Tillio Risso the accordion player was my Uncle. I have lots of his old photos.

This is the September 9, 1956 edition of the Ed Sullivan show. Ed had been in a car accident and Charles Laughton stepped in. Charles was live in New York, Right after the Vags they cut to Hollywood for Elvis. He was filming Love Me Tender at the time. The Vags opened for Elvis in this his first appearance on Ed Sullivan. Elvis did two more as part of a three show deal. This was not the first or last time the Vags were on Ed Sullivan.

According to www.tv.com Charles Laughton was the guest host on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' on September 9th, 1956; and both Elvis and the Vagabonds appeared on the show that night...
And Elvis' appearance was a remote from Hollywood, but tv.com has the Vagabonds performing a medley of "The Queens Ruler," "I Wonder" & "How You Gonna Keep Em' Down on the Farm," followed by comedy routine...
The site has them performing "Lazy River" on the May 5th, 1957 episode of the 'Sullivan' show...
Then again, maybe the group performed "Lazy River" on both the 1956 and the 1957 show...

The accordion player Atillio Risso was my Uncle. Ironically I once worked with a guy named "Hyman Orlow" , he went by Hy. (Hi orLow)

I loved the Vagabonds as a kid, in part because of what seemed to me at the time to be a crazy sounding word. No idea what it meant. During most of 1956 I was 8 years old. As I recall they were on often. They and the Hi Los. I liked the latter because Hi Lo was the named of a local grocery chain. My coaster wagon was a Hi Lo Flyer. (In the case of the band "hi low" referred to the extraordinary vocal range; high quality low prices in the case of the now defunct grocery chain).

introduced by Charles Laughton, of all unlikely people. I wonder if the indefatigableJane Klain could discover its provenance.
